AIBU to ask how to keep a hoover working for more than two years?

I have just had to replace yet another hoover because the suction has dwindled to the point I’d be better off sucking the dirt off the floor myself. I’ve tried Shark, Seba, Miele, Dyson but nothing ever lasts more than two years either because it falls apart or the suction goes. Is this just normal? I have always had at least one dog, currently two. Not huge shedders but produce a lot of dirt/grass seeds etc all year round. Wooden floors downstairs, carpets upstairs. I’d love any tips for keeping a hoover in good condition!

Our Henry is at least 15 years old and still working like new.

Blueuggboots · 28/12/2025 23:09

Do you clean them out?

Blueuggboots · 28/12/2025 23:10

Have them serviced??

Henry never dies

just about to say this, but henry can be stubborn at times if you know what i mean

TheFairyCaravan · 28/12/2025 23:15

Our Shark LiftAway is 9yrs old and our cordless one is almost 7 years old. DH is very particular about changing and cleaning the filters on them, though.

ClaredeBear · 28/12/2025 23:17

Gosh I’ve had my Henry for decades! Replaced the attachment recently for £20

LittleArithmetics · 28/12/2025 23:19

I have a Henry which has been in service for over 10 years and has been through two home renovations, hoovering up loads of rubble and dust, it's still working fine.

ChicGreyZebra · 28/12/2025 23:23

My Henry is 15 years old and still going strong!

Mt563 · 28/12/2025 23:27

I have a shark and try to give it a thorough clean once a month. This means taking the tube and dirt canister off, giving a good shake into the bin then showering them. I can't believe the filth that builds up in various bits of it and it's always like new suction wise afterwards.

BeardOToots · 28/12/2025 23:28

Buy a Henry

DramaAlpaca · 28/12/2025 23:30

My trusty Miele Cat and Dog C3 is at least fifteen years old and has so far survived four spaniels and two cats.

Dmsandfloatydress · 28/12/2025 23:31

Henry. Got mine, second hand for 20 quid 4 years ago. Nowt wrong with it. My dad's is 20 years old. No problems at all. Henry is the professional cleaners hoover.

Btowngirl · 28/12/2025 23:36

Well shark have a 5 year warranty. We have had 2 completely replaced for similar reasons so if I were you, I’d start by going back to shark customer service! We also get ours professionally cleaned every 6-12 months or so which has made a difference.

Unforgettablefire · 28/12/2025 23:37

Another voting Henry. I’ve one of the first ones it’s still going strong. They last forever and are so hardy they use them on building sites even.

Bitzee · 28/12/2025 23:41

Another vote for Henry. I dropped it all the way down the stairs once and he’s still alive and kicking.

Barney16 · 28/12/2025 23:58

My Dyson is 12 years old and still going strong. I had a Vax for about 35 minutes and it stopped working, a hoover lasted about three months. So I wheeled out the Dyson again.

Jugendstiel · 29/12/2025 00:11

You need a Henry. They are annoying - very awkward on stairs, keep falling over with stupid grins on their faces but utterly unbreakable. I have only had two in thirty years and the second one is still pretty new. I bought the first when I noticed film crews working in my area always had them and so did my next door neighbour who ran a cleaning company. I reckoned if professionals choose them, they must be the best for the job.

iconbaby123 · 29/12/2025 00:12

It's you not maintaining them

Aislyn · 29/12/2025 00:14

Get a Henry. He is indestructible

Sunshineandrainbow · 29/12/2025 00:16

Was going to suggest sebo as mine is 16 years old and so good but you have tried one.

SouthernNights59 · 29/12/2025 00:23

My last two were actual Hoovers and the first one lasted a long time, the second is still going strong. I do clean the filters regularly.

Our Henry is celebrating his 20th birthday this year. Part of the family :)

Happy birthday when it comes Henry! We’ve just welcomed our Henry into the family he’s only 3 days old and I’ve been a bit worried I’d made a mistake but reading all the positivity for him on here has reassured me that I’ve done the right thing and I will soon get used to him.

I love how there's no cleaning of the Hetty/Henry filter. Even if you suck up renovations dust etc you just bang the filter on the floor to get the worst of the dust out and then carry on using it. There's a knack to manoeuvring them, you need to keep dragging them and keep them close to you, ensuring they're clear of the doorframe before entering a room. I worked as a cleaner and happily manoeuvred them around even the most cluttered spaces, it's no problem once you're used to them. The Hetty is the smaller and lighter but not by much. The switch to step on on the head, for switching to brush down for hard floors and brush up for carpet is so easy too. There's just nothing to dislike about them really. I vacuum weekly and change the bag once a year (no pets and small home). The worst I've ever had to do is stick a broom handle up the pipe to clear a blockage once or twice when using it at work.

topsecretcyclist · 29/12/2025 00:54

My Henry is around 19-22 years old (I can't remember when I got him, but he's older than my youngest, and maybe my next youngest. He's a big boy, takes up a lot of space and cumbersome. I bought a small cordless vacuum earlier in the year that is easier to move about the house. I did ponder on getting rid of Henry but my children were appalled, like I was chucking out a sibling. A sibling that cleans with a smile on his face and doesn't answer back. I think I'll chuck them out instead. 😁

Jonnyenglish · 29/12/2025 02:44

the only issue with henry is when hes being a pickle is that smile he has so to speak
