AIBU to ask how to keep a hoover working for more than two years?

I have just had to replace yet another hoover because the suction has dwindled to the point I’d be better off sucking the dirt off the floor myself. I’ve tried Shark, Seba, Miele, Dyson but nothing ever lasts more than two years either because it falls apart or the suction goes. Is this just normal? I have always had at least one dog, currently two. Not huge shedders but produce a lot of dirt/grass seeds etc all year round. Wooden floors downstairs, carpets upstairs. I’d love any tips for keeping a hoover in good condition!

Henry hovers are awful imo. Commercial feeling and don't have brushes on the head.

Shark offer a 5 year warranty and are helpful.

Op you also need to do maintenance on the Hoover

the only issue with henry is when hes being a pickle is that smile he has so to speak

Edited

I find that smile so passive aggressive. He just rolls onto his side if you don't pick him up and carry hm everywhere, being heavy and cumbersome and gurning away. But he does actually pick up dust and is unkillable. And I don't hate him as much a dysons. My mother had a Dyson. It is so clearly designed by some arse who has never done the vacuuming in his life.

So Henry stays. I am trying to be nicer to him. I usually swear at him every time I hoover.

Yours is better behaved than mine. On stairs he just rolls all the way down, ensuring he hits my bare feet on the way down, then lies on his side, grinning.

I inherited my dad's Henry hoover. He died in 2013 and he had it for about 3 years before that so going for 15 years now. Worth investing in.

Your Henry sounds like an arse.

We were given our Henry over 18 years ago, when DS was a baby and cried every time we used the Dyson. It was from DH’s work and was used on building sites, it’s well over 30 years old now. We only have 1 flight of stairs and I put it on the step in front of me and hold it in place with my knees and use the smaller head to vacuum with.

I did buy a Shark as we only have a tiny hallway to keep it in, but even though it was an anti hair wrap it couldn’t cope with 3 people’s long hair and I was fed up within a couple of weeks of having to cut it out of the roller.

I vacuum a few times a week, mostly carpet, but it copes fine with the brush that’s in the head, for tiled and solid wood floors downstairs. No maintenance at all, apart from changing the bag twice a year and a wipe over the outside now and then. I do not have time in my life to maintain a vacuum cleaner every month.

I have two Mieles, one at least 10yrs old and one over 20yrs old. I’m not a keen housewife but they are used.

My first reaction was are you actually emptying the hoover. The Mieles have high filtration disposable bags which seem to protect the filters. You can’t reuse them so do not see gradual reduction in performance.
We also have a hand held Shark for picking up dog hair in the kitchen, we have a black labrador and a stone coloured floor, and that rapidly fills up unless emptied after each use and in shedding season, two to three times during use.

Many years ago my DF gave my DSis an ancient cylinder hoover for her student house. After 3 months she phoned him m to complain that it was no longer sucking. When he asked her if she’d emptied it she replied “why do you need to empty it”. A house full of uni students were clueless re the inner workings of a hoover. Meanwhile no. 1 daughter could strip down an average hoover to remove blockages, change a car tyre, fit a car battery and cook a full roast dinner. No. 2 daughter had an older sister to do all those things. I often wonder how she has made her way, successfully, through life but then I realise that most of our communications involve at least one “how do I “ question. I realised that when we lost our parents I was the go to. I have introduced her to Google but she still contacts me to check if Google is correct. Fortunately No. 3 daughter was fiercely independent, hated the fact that I knew things and ultimately married a husband who has an amazing man shed that James May would be jealous of. In fact they would get on like a house on fire. No.1 daughter married a dyslexic motorbike fan who has no interest in DIY. No.2 daughter married a graphic designer who decorated like he was painting the Sistine Chapel and took twice as long. They are divorced. Her current DH is very talented in DIY but not a patch on No.3’s DH.

My late DF would always refer to us as No. 1,2 & 3 daughters. Although I think it was only when communicating news about one to the other.

Are you servicing your vacuum every year? Replacing the filter every 3 months or so?

TheWormThatTurned · 30/12/2025 00:30

Did your Sebo definitely die or does it just need clearing out / servicing?
Mine gets clogged quite easily but it's a total workhorse that keeps going.
Check the filters / nozzle etc. I'd genuinely be surprised if it's broken.
