To be sick of people saying "One won't hurt" or "You can have one!" to the designated driver.

Getting so sick of people saying this to me if i'm the designated driver.

I make the choice to be 100% sober if i'm driving, i don't think it's worth the risk if anything DOES happen and i get breathalysed, besides which, i also take a medication that can make the effects of alcohol more intense.

I'm always polite about saying that i don't/won't drink if i'm driving, which is nearly always as i'm the only adult in the house that drives.

Getting so sick of the 'you can have one' lot who try and persuade me to have a glass of wine, or the 'here try this, go on, you can have a bit' or "One won't hurt if you're eating" being constantly said to me.

If you're someone who does this, ffs, stop it, and respect the person has said NO.

Just thank them and ignore or ask them for their car keys as you are going to have at least one drink. I can tell you now what their answer will be

AnneElliott · 28/12/2025 20:14

Yes it is really annoying. My sister in laws father nagged at me to have a drink the first time I ever met him. I was driving his pregnant daughter home - what a muppet!

HighburyHope · 28/12/2025 20:20

Oh I hear you OP. It’s not just designated drivers either. I have chosen not to have alcohol for a few years now, due to migraines. Here’s my Christmas Eve:

Host (close relative): Mulled wine?
Me: No thanks, I’m happy with my mocktail.
Host: But it’s only 8% alcohol. Not strong!
Me: Sure, but as you know I don’t drink alcohol as it gives me migraines.
Host: It hardly even counts!
Me: Uh huh.
Host: We made it specially! Have a small one at least!

Etcetera.

YANBU. I abhor drink drivers and firmly believe that any alcohol when driving is too much.
There's no excuse, reason or anything in the world that will change my mind - I was taught that if you're driving, you're not drinking, not at all, mot even one.
I'm 47, I've never gotten behind the wheel under the influence and neither has my eldest daughter who is the only one of my DC old enough to drive.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-alcohol, I LOVE a drink, but not if I'm driving.

Same, i'm quite happy to have a drink, but not if i'm driving. i don't see the need, and i'm not sure i'd ever forgive myself if i did have 'just one' and something happened.

I'm only a couple of years younger than you, and it was very much drummed into me too.. both by adverts growing up, and friends having accidents.

One of the benefits of the almost zero alcohol limit in Scotland has meant that this is very unusual here now, thank goodness. I absolutely hated the justification of others to try to force an alcoholic drink on someone else.

daisychain01 · 28/12/2025 20:36

It takes a special kind of arsehole to start arguing with an adult who chooses not to put any alcohol into their body. They're an utter twat.

if anyone did that to me, I would look them square between the eyes and say "read my lips, NO" and then ignore them. Other than pin you to the floor and force a G+T down your throat there is literally nothing they can do.

millymollyminging · 28/12/2025 20:39

I never get this, you mix with odd people!

Jungleballsjungleballs · 28/12/2025 20:40

‘I don’t drink and drive ‘

Paddington hard stare.

mrsfollowill · 28/12/2025 20:42

Reminds me of being a kid in the 70's. I rarely choose to be designated driver as I like a drink but if I had to be the driver I just have soft drinks. When I was pregnant everyone (including DH) assumed I would be. Did it once and they all spoke such bollocks I refused to do it ever again. I know my dad would have been over the limit in the 70's with his 'only had three pints- fine!' shit. Also very hot on drinking the night before- seen people arrive at work clearly shitfaced from the night before (this was 20 yrs ago - thankfully less common these days

MonGrainDeSel · 28/12/2025 20:44

I can't see the point of having a drink if you are driving. Why take the risk? I never have any alcohol if I'm going to be driving and I can't see any reason to change that.

SunnyViper · 28/12/2025 20:45

Anyone who trie to make someone drink boils my piss.

JoshLymanSwagger · 28/12/2025 20:49

I'm very much all or nothing.

I agree. People should stop forcing the sober designated driver to have "just the one".

It's more than rude.

It's none of their business.

It's extended family mostly... It's even weirder imho when they know I'm the one driving them home.

PollyBell · 28/12/2025 20:52

Driver or not why cant people ever accept the first no, if other people have alcohol issues and need people to drink that is on them, no means no

Have a drink and tell them to get a cab...maybe the cost will put them off doing it again 🤞

pteromum · 28/12/2025 20:54

exceptionally annoying OP. Stand your ground.

scotland here, so limit is basically zero. has been for many years.

we live in a very rural farm. Someone always drives, even up the tracks. never had a drink. Just not worth it.

Quite, nobody I socialise with does this
I was at a party xmas Eve and was driving and when anyon offered me a drink I just said no thanks I'm driving and that was that.

greenbuckets · 28/12/2025 20:55

I'd find anyone mithering me to have a drink annoying, whether I was driving or not.

Sbmpp · 28/12/2025 20:55

I was an er nurse in a trauma center. I think the stats were that 90% of MVA’s were alcohol involved. I can’t understand how someone would want to risk taking someone’s life.

RampantIvy · 28/12/2025 20:55

Same here. I think you need better friends.

Marylou2 · 28/12/2025 20:56

YANBU. I say I've been driving for 35 years and never had even one before I drove. I hardly drink at all in any circumstances now. People who encourage others to drink and drive are morons.

TheNightingalesStarling · 28/12/2025 20:59

Two questions anyone needs to ask themselves

Would it be legal for me to drive
Do I feel confident in my safety to drive

Some people thats a couple if pints over the evening, for thers just a half, for others its nothing. For some even "alcohol free" versions are out. And that decision is completely personal and no one should question that.

Fionasapples · 28/12/2025 20:59

Yes I get this from my cousin. I got so sick of it that I stopped being polite. I told her I wasn't boring, I was responsible, not stupid like her, risking hers and her family's life by drinking and driving.
There was a bit of a shocked silence in the room then my auntie said Well you can have a wine.

I give up.

AcquadiP · 28/12/2025 21:01

We're almost in 2026 and some people are still doing this? Madness.
