To apply for a promotion while pregnant

There is promotion opportunity at work and I had thought maybe I would go for it but I have just found out I’m pregnant. There are a few others on my job level who will go for it and probably one of them will get it but AIBU to even apply just in case I did get it?
If I did get it, I’d be working in the role for about 7 months before going to have the baby and the maternity cover would likely end up being a temporary promotion for one of the others on my level! So by the time I came back to the role, my maternity cover would have done the job for longer than I would!
This is my last baby so I would be coming back to the role permanently, but I wouldn’t want to mess work around by not being in the role for very long before going off. Also the internal politics of someone else (who didn’t get the job originally) covering me could be horrible. Promotion opportunities don’t come up very often (every 10 years or so) so if I miss out now, it’ll be a long time before I can try again. I’m not desperate to move up but it would make financial sense to with another child to pay for!

Go for it. I was promoted a week before I went on MAT leave and work even put my MAT pay up to the new rate. Although MAT leave is big to us, it's part of life for companies. If you're going to work there for years, a spell of MAT leave is small. I've also found people see going for a promotion while pregnant as ambitious. It shows a commitment to the company too. Good luck

Absolutely apply.

Definitely go for it!

Absolutely you should! Maternity leave is a short period of your working career - you shouldn't put your progression on hold. I did similar.. found out i was pregnant just as a promotion secondment opportunity came up. The secondment was for 6 months, taking me almost up to my mat leave starting then they would be advertising the job permanently. I applied for the secondment and got it. Announced my pregnancy a week later (at 3 months). Did the job for 6 months and applied for the permanent role when it came up. Was successful so they put a Maternity cover in place and I came back after 9 month mat leave. Go for it!

Absolutely apply, you need to think about your long term not just the imminent. Speaking as HR for the other side I’d say the same. We just deal with this stuff it’s fine.

Go for it, I didn't when I was pregnant 17 years ago and massively regretted it. I was told by my managers that there was no point in applying (this was NHS)! I'd try to keep your pregnancy a secret till descions are made though.

Go for it. Think of it another way, hopefully you'll get the job - but you'll also be giving an opportunity for someone else to bolster their CV too.
