People who will only have Yorkshire pudding with beef

Can I ask why? Yorkshire puddings are a nice addition to any roast meat. I’ve just never understood why you would deprive yourself of Yorkshire pudding on a roast because the meat isn’t beef, what is the reasoning? Some people seem to feel quite passionately about it.

Me and DH are vegetarian so according to some we should not be eating them ever!

In fact we have them with every roast

I don’t like them, weird things. Haven’t eaten one since I was a child.

Oh yes I wonder if that's it - that makes some sense as the origin of it.

Not sure it does though - chicken is cheap now, but wasn't in the past. DM was telling me over Christmas they rarely had roast chicken when she was growing up as it was expensive.
Traditionally, Yorkshire pudding was cooked under the beef in the dripping, so wouldn't have worked with other meat... I'd think the idea of it being 'common' was more about people not adhering to tradition. Perhaps the upper classes felt these people weren't educated enough to know how things 'should be done.'

Exactly, and the problem now is that a pub Sunday roast will serve huge Yorkshire puddings with every meat in order to make the plate look full. I don’t mind a small one, but hate the huge ones which take over the plate.

I agree and they are almost always over cooked and hard as they’ve been reheated.

not only with every roast (I don't eat meat so I ignore what the meat eaters are having anyway) but also a big one as a brunch wrap (slap a full (veggie) English in it and roll it up) is delicious.

Growing up we never had yorkies with Sunday lunch, but then we always had roast chicken - never anything else. So as an adult I cook yorkies every single Sunday regardless of whatever meat we do (ironically we pretty much never do roast beef). Good luck to anyone who tries to take my right to Yorkshire puddings away from me! 🤣

If I'm given a Yorkshire pudding in a restaurant or as a guest I'll eat it no matter what the meat is - but out of choice I would have it with beef.

I love all food, well mostly all, but don't want everything with everything.

Just as Italians wouldn't put parmesan on a fish dish; or Indians wouldn't serve curry with mashed potatoes - some things are traditional, tried and tested, etc.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 29/12/2025 15:15

I'd be hung, drawn and quartered.
I eat Yorkshire puddings with a mid week pork chop, chicken Kiev or whatever else takes my fancy.

It really doesn’t bother me what people choose to eat with what...I love a packet of chocolate buttons added to a packet of Walkers cheese and onion crisps.

What I do take objection to and what does bother me is people telling me it's not the done thing.
It hurts no one, as you say why does it bother them, I'm not insisting anyone else do it, I enjoy eating them and that's all others need to know.

I don't particularly like them at the best of times. Therefore happy to confine them to beef.

There, I said it.

Bit different but a masala dosa is basically curried mashed potatoes in a pancake. Delicious Indian breakfast.

Yorkshire puddings are a great addition to all sorts of meals
including sausages
cranberry and Brie
Nutella
strawberry jam
and yes. With a roast. All of them. Not just beef!!
