People who will only have Yorkshire pudding with beef

Can I ask why? Yorkshire puddings are a nice addition to any roast meat. I’ve just never understood why you would deprive yourself of Yorkshire pudding on a roast because the meat isn’t beef, what is the reasoning? Some people seem to feel quite passionately about it.

Nervous to post now but… I have no idea why but we only have them with beef. I can’t give you a logical reason, just that’s how it’s always been. But you’ve opened my eyes to this being highly illogical and I’ll definitely make them with other roasts going forward! I do cook them in the beef dripping but happy to buy a jar from the butcher and serve them up with lamb and chicken! My family will thank you for it I’m sure as they love my yorkshires!

Ah glad to read you’ve been swayed 😁

Because the cook doesn't want the bother of making them? It's an extra thing to worry about and if you want them really nice then they need to be cooked at the last minute, with the oven on a really high temperature. We wouldn't give those bought ones room on the plate!
Only having them with roast beef means they are a special treat and are appreciated as such.
Of course, f I go to a cervery I will have Yorkshire pudding with turkey, gammon or whatever else is being served.

genesis92 · 28/12/2025 15:43

It’s a bit common to have it with other meats. It’s also what makes a roast beef that extra special. Each to their own though

Mmm…. Love Yorkshire puddings….have them reheated next day with jam 🤤

My Yorkshire Grandad used to eat the leftover Yorkshire puddings with jam for tea.

A bit common?

It's no wonder people from overseas struggle to understand the class system in the UK.

What are bacon rolls?

To me that's a breakfast food item, and doesn't go with a roast!

You don't have bacon rolls and pigs in blankets with your turkey at Christmas? Shock, horror!!!!😱

isargosaword · 28/12/2025 15:50

@GillyGillyOssenfeffa yeah I get not being bothered to make them, just not the people refusing yorkshires on offer because it’s ’not beef’

@genesis92 common to whom?

It's their choice though isn't it?

Being vegetarian though the issue never arises. 40 years ago when I had my last roast it was with beef only.

ScrambledEggs12 · 28/12/2025 15:53

Tradition I guess? As a child we only had them with beef.

My partner has always had them with all roasts, so we do that now too. Life is much better!

thefamous5 · 28/12/2025 15:53

We dont eat beef. We have Yorkshire puddings with gammon and chicken and lamb.

Traditionally a joint of beef sits on top of the Yorkshire pudding on a trivet and drips into the batter, the Yorkshire almost becomes a batter pudding, very thick and tasty and crispy on the edges, very little rise to it and certainly not light and fluffy. It was always served first with lashings of gravy so you needed less meat for the main. (My grandfather was from Yorkshire and would only eat it this way, as a child in the 70s I fought to have it as a "starter" and as part of the main!!).

Nowadays for me, Yorkshire with anything and everything!!

When I was growing up in Yorkshire I was told that they did that in the south of England.

To me they are a starter with gravy, go with any roast, can be part of other meals eg toad in the hole, or cold with syrup for supper or breakfast.

Why is it common to have with other meats?

Throwmoneyatit · 28/12/2025 15:56

I always have homemade Yorkshire puddings in the fridge for snacking. Make myself a small pot of gravy and dunk. Mmmmm...
Yorkshire puddings can go with anything. YADNBU

Leftover Yorkshire Pudding?
What's that?

ChocoChocoLatte · 28/12/2025 15:57

Have them with ice cream - you can thank me later

DilkushaKitchen · 28/12/2025 16:00

We only have yorkies with roast beef, mainly because of tradition, I suppose. We were talking about it yesterday and thought if we had them with every roast, they wouldn't be as much of a treat.

I am, quite happy for other people to have them whenever they want.

ChrimboLimbo · 28/12/2025 16:01

Best with beef, but great with anything.

I like them for lunch the next day, stuffed with veg and cheese, cold though.

Why on earth is that not a Thing? Pancakes are…Pancakes, bacon and maple syrup are in the US, toad in the hole is Yorkshire pud and sausage … perfect fusion food brunch.

Not enough gravy with breakfast 😅

Have you ever had a Dutch baby? They are essentially a Yorkshire pudding, but usually sweet. Lovely for breakfast with fruit compote.

The original point if Yorkshires was to full you up with something cheap so you need less expensive meat.

Ergo, they work with any meal.

My Granny (from Yorkshire) used to serve Yorkshire Pudding from a square tray (not individual round things) with gravy as a 'starter'. To fill you up before the main meal.

muddyford · 28/12/2025 16:13

Delicious cold with raspberry jam!

Bit daft in my view. I serve Yorkies with all meat and batter pudding as part of Toad in the Hole.

SwedishEdith · 28/12/2025 16:32

I'm in the 'different accompianments for different meats' camp re roasts so Yorkshires with anything other than beef would taste "wrong" to me. I also love fruit with meat - don't get why that's considered weird. And Christmas dinner as a child (so 70s as my living memory) had chipolata sausages and bacon served separately - never called 'pigs in blankets' until sometime in my adulthood. Feels like only the last 30 years or so that I became aware of that name.

Exactly, and the problem now is that a pub Sunday roast will serve huge Yorkshire puddings with every meat in order to make the plate look full. I don’t mind a small one, but hate the huge ones which take over the plate.

It's worse than that.

I don't even have turkey....
