To think “girl math” and “girl dinner” infantilise women?

They’re marketed as empowering but to me they feel patronising.

AIBU?

They sound idiotic concepts, whatever they are.

AgnesX · 27/12/2025 13:58

As expressions go they're on a par with "picky bits" ie twee and a bit tacky. Just yuk.

AtomicBlondeRose · 27/12/2025 13:58

It’s just a bit of fun. My DD and I enjoy these types of memes but we’re actually both good at maths and also enjoy cooking! We just enjoy the shared camaraderie of being home alone together and saying “girl dinner!” and having our snacks in front the TV. Could we do it any other time? Sure, but it makes it into a fun occasion rather than just feeling like we CBA to cook.

Mydogisagentleman · 27/12/2025 13:58

I've never seen it.
Our DD is a girl mathematician.
She's fierce

Pretty much this.

Also, stop with the American spelling of 'maths'.

dailyconniptions · 27/12/2025 13:59

It's mathS.
Girl anything is tedious wank.

upstairsdownstairscardboardbox · 27/12/2025 13:59

I lost it at a colleague, paid £135K a year who giggled and announced "I'm just a girl" when she made a basic but serious accounting error.
Absolute fucking disgrace.

xAwaywiththefairiesx · 27/12/2025 14:00

Are they any different from "man flu" and having a "boy look" (when you look but can't find something)

(that last one might just be my sister, she says it, not sure if anyone else does)

TesChique · 27/12/2025 14:00

Or

And hear me out

Its an instance of people not having to take themselves incredibly seriously every hour of every day.

I love both i think theyre funny

Sahara123 · 27/12/2025 14:00

I don’t even know what this means, I’m getting too old for this shit.

cariadlet · 27/12/2025 14:01

I know I could just Google but I'm assuming that someone else on the thread will have come across these phrases and can explain them.
What on earth are girl maths and girl dinner?

EmpressaurusKitty · 27/12/2025 14:02

See also “girl boss”.

Stupid.

It's normally called 'man looking'.

Oh OK, my sister says "you had a boy look"

clary · 27/12/2025 14:03

girl math is when you do some sums that come out with "ah so I have £50 left over which means I can buy the new bag". Only girls are inclined to spend on unneeded frippery you see.

I hate it.

A boy look tho – that is a thing; it’s when DS moans "I can't find my xyz" and you go and look and it is right there under the first T-shirt you lift up to look. So DS only managed a boy look.

A girl dinner is when it's just you, so you don't cook heavy food, you just have a plate of random bits and pieces and/or leftovers, like a slice of quiche, a couple of crackers, some fruit and crisps etc.
Something you can't really see a man putting together and then sitting down to eat.

Girl math(s) is when you twist things in a cheeky way to justify spending. Something like "paid in cash so it's free" or "treats don't count at Christmas" or "I bought it in the sale, so really it's an investment".

They’re social media phrases that started on TikTok. “Girl math” is usually used jokingly to justify spending (e.g. reframing a £200 purchase as “basically free” because it was discounted, paid with points or spread over time). “Girl dinner” tends to mean a very minimal or unstructured meal like snacks instead of a cooked dinner, framed in a cutesy way.

Some people find them harmless or funny. I find the framing a bit infantilising, which is why I asked.

That’s not girl math, it’s not about oh I have money left so let’s spend it.

EmpressaurusKitty · 27/12/2025 14:10

I loathe cutesy / twee / sweet.

It’s like when someone says a name is ‘sweet’ or ‘cute’ as if that’s a good thing….

usedtobeaylis · 27/12/2025 14:10

I find it boring more than anything, on a par with 'girl boss' as pp mentioned, so actually yes, probably quite infantilising. Its just social media nonsense but probably preferable to current maudlin mum-media centred around children growing up, which I think is incredibly damaging to mental health.

LuncheonInThePark · 27/12/2025 14:11

Ugh I only recently came across 'girl dinner', and it was on a restaurant menu.

Salad, fries and a diet coke. Made me cringe when I saw it.

CrazyGoatLady · 27/12/2025 14:11

These terms are unbelievably stupid and yes, they do infantilise and demean women. But they come from social media, so...

Mochudubh · 27/12/2025 14:12

YANBU

I bought some socks the other day, with Land Rovers on them. The label said "Boys Toys" as if girls can't be into Land Rovers. I had a rant to DH about how sexist it was, he didn't get what my problem was. As in "So what, you bought the socks anyway".

Urgh!

Ooh no... I'm not a fan of it on a restaurant menu
