Christmas gift hits and misses?

Did any of the gifts in your house go down unexpectedly well/flop?

After all the careful planning and wish lists, longings etc, what has lived up to expectation? Has anything not gone down as amazingly as you thought it would?

Were there any unexpected surprises - good or bad?

Hits

  • dh loved the football lego set dd chose for him.
  • dd adores the ouchies puppy she desperately wanted but I was worried would be a flop.
  • tiny box of marbles for dd's stocking that I added as a little extra.

Flops

  • Nothing major, but socks that are too small.
  • Toiletries I am allergic to, though I'm still grateful they tried.

Oo love this!

We had mostly hits- parents loved all of their gifts, our toddler loved absolutely everything, my husband got me a necklace engraved with both of our children’s names which is just my favourite thing, he had been worrying I might not like the style but it’s perfect.

Flops-

  • A gift of 6 inch high heels & a litre of whiskey I was given- I’m 6 weeks postpartum and have never drank whiskey, I can only assume these were random last minute choices from someone who didn’t really think😂
  • Husband was also given some socks that are too small!

all in all, no drama really!

I bought my mum a jumper which she is currently parading around in - win.

Lovely day and lots of hits!
Scalextric has gone down a storm as has a fighter plane shaped drone with the kids. DS3 sat and read one of his new books in it's entirety before lunch.
Misses were fewer. I was bought hand cream and body lotion in a brand I don't like and which I don't really ever use anyway. Those will be off to the charity shop.
Got a great bag from DH, exactly what I asked for. DS1 was given a lovely thick hoodie from Grandma which I think he went to bed in (Bench if anyone wants to know that brand).
My only regret is not being able to control the sweet and chocolate situation a bit better. Kids were given loads and just ate their way through it all morning meaning lots of ' I'm too full' at dinner time. Might try and intercept and ration next year.

Hits, most of them really, my family are quite good at gifting, but as standouts my son got for me (obviously found in a charity shop) the ENTIRE Flashman series of books, which I'm really looking forward to reading, and my daughter-in-law gave me a lovely scarf with robins on. I lost a much beloved relative called Robin, and sonehow it made me think of him, but in a happy way. Oh, and my daughter went to a really expensive local chocolate shop and asked for a little box with 6 of my very favourite chocolates in, and the lady said "Oh, they're only small" so she filled the box up with 12 for the same price!!! 😋😋😋😋😋

I got my DP a wine aerator, with an electric corkscrew and it went down amazingly well with his whole family. The very expensive wine also went down amazingly 🤣

Bought our 4 year old a whoopie cushion, he can’t stop playing with it.

The main car engine take apart toy he wanted, he’s barely touched

MotherOfCrocodiles · 26/12/2025 09:03

Unexpected hit: hula hoops for all the kids.

Kastri · 26/12/2025 09:43

My son liked everything I got him but when I asked him what was his favourite,he said the pen which has multi purposes, such as a ruler, screwdriver etc.
I got it in Poundland!!!

DS was surprisingly pleased with a hat and wore it all day (just a stocking filler beanie hat) - he has ASD and is very hard to buy for, we've had lots of misses over the years!

A slight miss was someone gifted me prosecco (I don't drink, even when I did I didn't like prosecco). However, it got immediately regifted to someone else who was very pleased with it, so became a hit.

The most enthusiastically received gift was an air fryer for DD1 that I impulse bought in the black Friday sale. She posted it straight on her uni house WhatsApp group, and they're all excited about what they're going to cook in it.

Chocolate/sweets,
we give free reign over Christmas. Eat what you want, when its gone it's gone, no restrictions. Never had anyone be sick (yet?) and it not the hill I'm gonna die on at Christmas.
