Who got the worst gift?

Very very lighthearted. Some people are starving so no whining about not getting the perfect gift. Instead looking at it from a humoristic perspective: who got the worst gift in our family? Please add yours as well..
In our family;

  1. DH got 200 ml cologne while he wanted/needed 100 ml to bring with him on airplane (travels every week).
  2. I got fine chocolate with alcohol from uncle again (everyone has told him I do not like it but he just can't get it). He even added "I know you can't get enough of those". Not passive aggressive- that would be sinister. He really likes me and is convinced I like them.

Also got a large hand bag from DH. Not wildly expensive but still- the cords are too thin- I keep loads of stuff in my handbag. He bought it 3 months ago so can't return it.

  1. DS1 got a sort of a travel bag for mobile Phone to attach on bike from an aunt. He hasn't been riding his bike for years.

4.DS2 got a shirt of his favourite team that was so large on him it looked like a dress. Can't return it. Bil said he will grow in it😅

  1. Dh got Mil a a stylish coat size L. It was too small. Yet Mil isn't a big woman. I'm a medium and it was perfect on me but she's got bigger breasts. She wasn't happy about large being too small.. didn't say anything because very polite but it was obvious she was unhappy.
  1. Aunt got a big box of chocolate. She's on wli and barely eats anything. Def not chocolate. She discreetly passed them on to dh.

So who wins?

DS got 2 identical Lynx gift sets. One from us and one from MIL. He took it all in good humour as he’s 16 and actually loves the stuff. His view was well, I have plenty to keep me going for the year 🤣

So nice and pleasant to hear of someone actually appreciating what they got! Especially as that age group get so much shit for being "ungrateful".

Cornishqween · 26/12/2025 10:39

I got a stick of chub rub/anti chafe gel from dhConfused…luckily I also got an ember mug which I asked for and was over the moon about but lots of my gifts were things I’d never want or use. I’d take aftershave and a handbag all day long

fouroclockrock · 26/12/2025 10:40

Im just remembering a time where i was asked what i wanted as a gift and asked for a specific salt and pepper mill set that id been admiring for a couple of years. Ok then….. much excitement for me to open the gift from the giver…. It was a pepper mill from a different brand. Chosen because it was even better. Not sure why but it somehow put me off ever buying the salt and pepper mills for myself anyway so now I have a pain to use pepper mill in a style that I wouldn’t choose and no salt mill years on!

Soonenough · 26/12/2025 10:45

@MumoftwoNC Could you get DH to ask her for the receipt? Would she be offended ? Seems such a shame as I know how expensive they are . Even without the hole phobia thing I would hate a pattern I just didn't like .

Emigree · 26/12/2025 10:46

I made a mistake this year - grabbed a very 'in' fantasy book as a stocking filler for my son after a recommendation from a friend, without really researching it as she said her teens thought it was great . He came siding over to ask - did I mean to give him this? Reading the back apparently it's a much more explicit romantasy than I had expected , and he likes his imaginative worlds and Sci fit undiluted with any annoying stuff about emotions, relationships or sexual tension. 😂
Now I need to ask my friend if she's read it...

My mil got me an old lady house coat. Akin to the picture attached. But it’s pink. 😶

I'd probably wear that 🤣

Every year our family does a white elephant with a different theme. This year the theme was "something you have in your house that you don't want/need" aka The Wrapped Tat Exchange. We played our game passing around our parcels and then opened them together. There was a fair number of scented candles, plant pots etc but the winning gifts were an old box of Laterfal Flow tests and a mystery tin from my son's food cupboard - he had taken the label off before wrapping. My daughter who has sized 3 feet ended up with a pair of inner soles sized 7 - 12.

Lol I've literally considered this! Dh says "we just won't use them very often" which I think is a compromise but yes it's just such a shame because she'd have really wanted to get something I like.

As it's MIL and they were expensive, are you close enough that you could explain and see if you could return them for an exchange/ could DH have that conversation if you can't?

A screw driver. A hand screwdriver. I have my own tool kit and apparently the screwdriver I have is unpleasant to use.
I was bemused. I do all the DIY in the house. If I wanted a new screwdriver I would buy a new screwdriver!
Actually I checked the old one and the handle is degrading so I have thrown it away and replaced it with the shiny new one! But still….
Married 51years and he still surprises me!

Oh and an Apple Watch. Hmmm I have no interest in one I like my Fitbit and think Apple Watches are a bit fancy for the life I lead. My phone, one the other hand, is an iPhone 11 and beginning to show its age. But I feel mean that both were a bit off and my diamond shoes are too tight!

Is it at least a SnapOn fancy screwdriver? I thought all screwdrivers were the same, until DS bought DH a SnapOn screwdriver for Christmas last year. It’s bloody awesome; feels lovely to hold, good weight, good quality changeable bits, and the shaft can be turned by hand as well as the handle. I am officially a screwdriver fangirl.

Every year my MIL gets me pyjamas which is a lovely thought. But the ones she buys are unwearable. They are fleecy (not terrible in itself but you couldnt sleep in them) and they are always cutesy designs, with puppies and love hearts. I cannot put into words how much they are not my thing, and i thought she would know this about me by now. I crossed my fingers this year theyd be different but she got me literally the same ones. No receipt but this year I will try to exchange them for some nice cotton plain ones. Previous years they went to charity shop. Anyway, its a nice thought. But she is a person you could absolutely not say it to without her getting the hump.i sound so ungrateful - sorry. Im not really. I got very few presents and im totally OK with that. Very happy with what I did get!

Sarahw33 · 26/12/2025 11:09

I got a toaster of hubby to be. The wedding is soon. We will see ….

BigButtons · 26/12/2025 11:10

PeeledOranges · 26/12/2025 06:18

I got some old lady slippers and a super warm blanket from my DP and a few generic bits from my Amazon wish list which I mostly keep updated for the dcs to choose gifts from.
Overall he spent less than £100 on me - I'm not bothered about the amount of money he spent. However I know he's spent £450 on the other woman which I've recently discovered. He's booked a weekend away in a beautiful cottage for them both. They are going this weekend. He doesn't know that I know but he will when he gets back!!

Omg!

LauraHopkins · 26/12/2025 11:16

6 New Zealand wool dryer balls from my mum. 1) We don’t have a tumble dryer and 2) dryer balls for Christmas??!

Rockfordpeach · 26/12/2025 11:19

This was last year but a Boots gift set in a battered box so old it had the old 90's Boots logo on and the moisturising cream had evaporated to a quarter an inch at the bottom of the pot

Oh god. I just looked at that and thought it was quite nice! Blush

I really am old now...

BlackCat14 · 26/12/2025 11:27

I saw your other post about your husbands aftershave, and think he definitely didn’t get a “bad” gift, he’s just very childish and ungrateful and doesn’t know that decanters exist!

MumoftwoNC · 26/12/2025 11:30

I don't know, dh suggested this and MIL is so kind, she'd pretend not to be offended even if she was offended. I'll leave it to dh to finesse if he thinks he can manage it, he's way more tactful than me, I'd probably start out being tactful and then blurt out something about trails of ants.

I 100% know this is all a Me Problem lol! I don't want to be That DIL!!

"Aibu, my ungrateful DIL asked for some plates and bowls for Xmas and I splashed out on some lovely ones from a well known and popular designer and she's just demanded the receipt because they remind her of scabies?"

VipersKiss · 26/12/2025 11:32

I got a probe which gives the clit an electric shock, I wanted jewellery, still time will tell and I might end up never leaving the house.

PumpkinSly · 26/12/2025 11:42

I got a reusable ocado shopping bag from my mother. I think no gift at all would have been less of a statement.

Spangers · 26/12/2025 11:46

MumoftwoNC · 26/12/2025 10:17

Thank you for understanding! I said privately to dh (not the giver) that I'm grateful but hate them... Well actually I said "don't you see how they look like they're covered in specks of headlice" but he does not understand. The headlice flecks are even raised bumps not flat.

I already have a trypophobic mixing bowl from the same giver that I have never used. Looks like it's erupted in pimples. Also raised.

It's just such a heartbreaking waste, I looked it up and they were quite expensive, and some nicer things I would have liked from the same shop.

Can you not just take them to the shop and see if they’ll exchange them? Even without the receipt they should do if still in the box.

125BPM · 26/12/2025 11:49

My MIL gave me a tin of unbranded cheap looking cookies, with an expiry date of Feb 2022, a weathered £2.50 sticker on the bottom, wrapped in happy birthday paper 😳😱😂

Who got the worst gift?

Old coffee jar containing a (used) pen and open packet of Post-it notes…it’s a memory jar apparently.

I quite like this

Always one.

Surely that's a pretty standard occurrence for most households containing 16 year old boys up and down the country?

Sorry but this made me laugh! I have never heard of this sort of hotel but it sounds hideous.

They've great if you're by yourself, the ones that I've heard of are sex segregated, and they're cheap. But aside from that? I prefer a Premier Inn!
