Who got the worst gift?

arcticpandas · 25/12/2025 21:47

Very very lighthearted. Some people are starving so no whining about not getting the perfect gift. Instead looking at it from a humoristic perspective: who got the worst gift in our family? Please add yours as well..
In our family;

  1. DH got 200 ml cologne while he wanted/needed 100 ml to bring with him on airplane (travels every week).
  2. I got fine chocolate with alcohol from uncle again (everyone has told him I do not like it but he just can't get it). He even added "I know you can't get enough of those". Not passive aggressive- that would be sinister. He really likes me and is convinced I like them.

Also got a large hand bag from DH. Not wildly expensive but still- the cords are too thin- I keep loads of stuff in my handbag. He bought it 3 months ago so can't return it.

  1. DS1 got a sort of a travel bag for mobile Phone to attach on bike from an aunt. He hasn't been riding his bike for years.

4.DS2 got a shirt of his favourite team that was so large on him it looked like a dress. Can't return it. Bil said he will grow in it😅

  1. Dh got Mil a a stylish coat size L. It was too small. Yet Mil isn't a big woman. I'm a medium and it was perfect on me but she's got bigger breasts. She wasn't happy about large being too small.. didn't say anything because very polite but it was obvious she was unhappy.
  1. Aunt got a big box of chocolate. She's on wli and barely eats anything. Def not chocolate. She discreetly passed them on to dh.

So who wins?

My mil got me an old lady house coat. Akin to the picture attached. But it’s pink. 😶

I laughed out loud at this

Plinkyplankplonk · 26/12/2025 12:02

I really wanted a luna moth necklace from Etsy for months, showed my husband what sorts I like, everything else was perfect but he forgot which I wanted and got me a cheap, gold coloured flat back moth with a bog standard charm that every cheap goth jewellery seller uses. I wa gutted and he did say I realised it wasnt very good when it arrived 🤭

I got a probe which gives the clit an electric shock, I wanted jewellery, still time will tell and I might end up never leaving the house.

I have so many questions about this I don't even know where to start

I quite like that, it looks comfy and warm. I'd dye it a brighter colour. I had a white towelling robe which i dyed bright orange, much nicer and cheerier.

Dd (2) received 3 buggies. Everyone had the same idea it would appear. She's happy out, as am I, as she won't go anywhere without one so we can have one in both cars and one at home. All the givers felt disappointed but I reassured them it was actually a good thing. Having to construct all 3 wasn't as amazing!

Can you not just take them to the shop and see if they’ll exchange them? Even without the receipt they should do if still in the box.

I'm not sure if she's got it at John Lewis or some other shop - it's the kind of fancy brand you could get at multiple places.

But also, the dilemma about offending her would still apply next time she visits and sees I'm not using them!

Dh thinks I've brought this on myself for asking for plates and bowls when I'm so particular. I suppose so...!! However, it's so rare I see any plates and bowls I don't like! I didn't think I was fussy, it's unusual to get plates and bowls covered in pimples haha.

He says next year we must only ask for consumables

I got a reusable ocado shopping bag from my mother. I think no gift at all would have been less of a statement.

My dad doesn't do gifts but he did get a hundred bags for life from eBay and let me have 50. I'm actually very happy! Bargain bags and lots of them. Bets are now being taken on what the level of depreciation will be.

Paperwhite209 · 26/12/2025 12:42

A wild selection of Temu tat from my mum...elasticated foil dish covers, slipper socks (not great fabric but I do wear them a lot so fair play), cotton pads, a apron with a massive cat on made from fabric that's probably only marginally more durable than kitchen towel and the annual windscreen frost protector which never gets used!

Also cash...which will be put in my account to replace what I spent on pressies to myself...a new necklace and a cloth bound edition of Wuthering Heights.

PoorUncleBarry · 26/12/2025 12:45

I had a 2021 Glossybox from Dmil ... that I gave her years ago :/ (I gave it as one of many gifts as she said she liked them)

Isanyonereallyanonymous · 26/12/2025 12:51

My brother and SIL bought me a rituals car air freshener. It cost £20 😳 for an air freshener 😳
I drive a van, which could usually do with a government health warning sticker on it it's so grim. Which is presumably why they bought it, but I can't stand smelly stuff.
I never buy 'luxury' items for myself so I'd have been thrilled with a fancy shower gel or face wash and feel a bit sad that so much money got spent on something I won't use tbh :( but very much a first world problem I appreciate!

This thread has been useful as I'd normally donate towels or toiletry sets to a regular charity shop but I can see how much more helpful they would be to a women's refuge, so thankyou whoever shared that.

The trip to London in a self contained pod hotel, husband spending £450 on a weekend away with his mistress and the £15 just eats voucher would have me spitting feathers tbh. The rest are just funny 🤣

SlashBeef · 26/12/2025 12:56

I'm so sorry to say that this thread has caused me real tears of laughter. The ocado shopping bag made me cackle.
I feel soothed too as I am also a victim of Temu this year. There needs to be a support group.

My sister bought me a beautiful scarf featuring a bird that she knows I love. So gorgeous is it , that I bought it for myself when I spotted it in the gift shop of a museum a few months ago. It's really unusual so I am shocked she came across it. It will be nice to have a spare!

Great to have a spare because it's as its one you love it's guaranteed to be the one scarf you will lose somewhere

I got this stunning dress from my MIL

https://www.iconleva.com/collections/all-dresses/products/adel

I had a baby this year so I have moved from a size 8 to a size 14, she got it in a size 8.... To be fair the dress is stunning, its for our wedding anniversary next year so I guess she it telling me there is time...

ADEL

Classic. Commanding. Effortless. The ADEL Lace and Satin Halter Gown is an ode to contrast. Delicate lace meets liquid satin in a silhouette that celebrates form. A plunging halter neckline frames the décolletage, its stretchy lace bodice tied effortle...

' I got a toaster of hubby to be. The wedding is soon. We will see ….' I do hope you bought him a set of DIY tools.

Old coffee jar containing a (used) pen and open packet of Post-it notes…it’s a memory jar apparently.

Please say this was from a child!

NotDarkGothicMama · 26/12/2025 13:08

MIL got teen DS in the family secret Santa. £20 limit, all done online with a wishlist etc. to help. She ignored his wishlist entirely and bought him a box of lebkuchen. He was very polite about it but I was bemused.

DS got 2 identical Lynx gift sets. One from us and one from MIL. He took it all in good humour as he’s 16 and actually loves the stuff. His view was well, I have plenty to keep me going for the year 🤣

That’s nothing! My nephew (age 15) got SIX Lynx gift sets yesterday! 😂

Devontownie · 26/12/2025 13:10

Hang on - didn't you roast your husband yesterday for being a spoilt brat about getting 200ml instead of a travel friendly 100 of best man scent?

I'll be honest - a " worst Xmas present thread" is the last thing I would of expected as your next one! 😂😂

JustMarriedBecca · 26/12/2025 13:19

Toilet brush.

Zooeymither · 26/12/2025 13:37

I got a beautiful recipe book from my husband of 20 years, full of meat recipes from star chefs.

I’m a lifelong vegetarian.

My MIL gave me a tin of unbranded cheap looking cookies, with an expiry date of Feb 2022, a weathered £2.50 sticker on the bottom, wrapped in happy birthday paper 😳😱😂

Just amazing.

Soony · 26/12/2025 13:47

I'll own up, this wasn't this year but has gone down in family history.
SIL likes some of the same authors as me and always buys everyone a book for Christmas. She openly admits to reading them all before wrapping.
When she visited in the summer she borrowed a paperback I had finished with. I'd bought it from a charity shop.

For Christmas she gave me the book, complete with original charity shop price sticker, wrapped up as my Christmas present. ( She had forgotten, it wasn't a joke).

housethatbuiltme · 26/12/2025 13:48

Not actually a gift he got but on new years eve while out shopping my DH phoned to ask 'Have I got DS any smellies?' because he had spotted an 'Old Spice' gift set in the sale.

Thankfully I had got DS a car themed aftershave set so could answer yes but DH claims he genuinely though a 17 year old would be excited to open Old Spice on Christmas morning.

Maybe as a middle aged woman Im out of touch but I think even Lynx is better than Old Spice. The only person I have even known that used Old Spice was my 90 year old grandad who used it after he had shaved with his old animal hair lather up shaving brush. The man looked the spit of Jim Bowen, obviously the epitome of teenage cool lol.

He got Fifa for the PS5 instead which while we will never know for definite but I'm pretty certain was the preferred choice.
