Did I make a mistake ?

After years of not buying very much at all at Christmas, I decided to row the boat out this year and get what DW really wanted. Wanted to see her face light up as she opened this extremely expensive gift. Bought at official outlet, as thought Ebay, Gumtree etc, was too much of a risk. Anyway she opens the parcel, and all I got was 'is it real ?' 'it's got a funny smell, like a chemical smell ?'. Gets glasses for closer inspection. 'is the stitching right' 'doesn't look like the stitching on my other bag ?' 'the strap's not very long' 'it rests at the hip' 'like it, but, I don't know, just got that feeling'........The full atomization process. AIBU to feel slightly disappointed with this response ?

Mistake with the bag, or the wife?

YANBU to feel upset at her response. How ungrateful.

Rude!!

CarefullyCuratedFurniture · 25/12/2025 13:11

She's rude and ungrateful. What are you going to do about it?

Eudaimonia11 · 25/12/2025 13:14

That is really rude of her and says a lot about her character.

Tell her you’ll take the bag back to the shop. Get a refund and use the money to treat yourself to something nice.

RosieSpring · 25/12/2025 13:14

Just show her the email from the official outfit? If you haven't previously spent much at Christmas that's probably why she thinks it's a fake.

Poms · 25/12/2025 13:15

This is why I hate unwrapping presents in front of the giver. They get upset when the receiver doesn’t perform adequate gratitude theatre. Were you expecting a hallmark moment?
You said you don’t usually buy her much. Maybe that’s why she wondered if it was fake.

JudgeBread · 25/12/2025 13:15

Sounds like her other bag is fake.

Ungrateful so and so.

BillieWiper · 25/12/2025 13:16

I guess if it's a designer item she's very conscious of it's authenticity. Maybe doesn't trust you not to buy a knock off. Just show her that it's from the proper place and hopefully she'll change her tune. It is rude though.

FestiveBauble · 25/12/2025 13:18

Nothing worse than having something dissected in-front of you! Surely it could have been done in private by her rather than out loud comments as unwrapping. Very rude!

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 25/12/2025 13:19

Yes that is rude,

However, show her the proof of purchase.

She clearly doesn't trust you to know what you are doing, but her delight will come.

Try to be forgiving..

gamerchick · 25/12/2025 13:24

Show her the receipt, tell her she's upset you and if she doesn't want it you'll send it back.

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 25/12/2025 13:27

After years of not buying very much at all at Christmas...

This is possibly why you're getting that reaction. If you don't usually spend a lot then she's probably finding it hard to believe you have splurged this year, hence why she thinks it's a fake.

My first thought too....

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 25/12/2025 14:04

Jesus that IS rude...

themerchentofvenus · 25/12/2025 14:13

Omg how rude!!

My response would be very rude, show her the genuine receipt, then snatch it off her and return it.

But then I'd never be married to someone so materialistic.

muggart · 25/12/2025 14:30

i think she couldn’t quite believe it! don’t think she was trying to be rude, just couldn’t believe she would get something so nice. Either she was in shock OR could she have potentially have been worried about the cost?

do you have the receipt? if so take her aside and ask her if she liked it, mention that it seemed like she didn’t like it so if you’ve got the wrong thing it can he returned. i reckon if you are non accusatory like that then she will tell you she loves it (or that you spent too much!)

TomatoSandwiches · 25/12/2025 14:35

If you don't tend to buy her gifts at Christmas or not expensive gifts perhaps she thinks you cheaped out on her?

Do you have previous for buying fake items or the non branded things?

grinchmcgrinchface · 25/12/2025 14:35

I would take it back for a refund and not replace it.
