To think that 17 degrees is not warm enough?

Staying with a family member who is refusing to agree that 17 degrees in a drafty living room is too cold!! I have a small child here with me and the said family member decided to sleep with the window open as they like the breeze. They also do not like to shut their bedroom doors so draft under our door into the ‘make shift’ bedroom all night. We are in England and it’s freezing at the moment. I am fuming and freezing but don’t want to ruin the day.

Overnight, in bed, I'd say it was OK because we don't have heating on at night at all. During the day though, too cold.

Stesha7 · 25/12/2025 09:01

I set my house to 20 when guests are here, luckily it heats up very quick so never a problem. But normally I have 18 in the day and 16 at night. I cannot stand sleeping in the warm! I loooove the cold air on my face as I’m warm under the duvet.

Regardless, it’s very bad from to refuse to change the temperature after a guests tells you they’re too cold.

dontmalbeconme · 25/12/2025 09:01

Just put a jumper on?

17 is fine. I'm really uncomfotable above 18, and overheated, stuffy houses are more of a problem as I can't wander round naked.

Horrorscope · 25/12/2025 09:01

YANBU - miserable!

Lots of people are still cold at 17 degrees even with a jumper on. Such a snotty response people always make, assuming it'd the person who's cold who is at fault!!!
They may well already have a jumper on.

awrbc81 · 25/12/2025 09:06

That’s definitely too cold for daytime, my house is freezing when it gets down to 17 degrees. We usually have the thermostat at 20 during the day.
It’s a comfortable sleeping temperature with warm PJs and duvet though.
I’d get lots of layers on and a hat on your little one of they feel cold.

Ohplesandbanonos · 25/12/2025 09:06

My house is always at 17 and I sleep with the window open all year round.

We are visiting relatives for Christmas and it is never below 24 due to health reasons. I keep having to pop out and walk the dog for fresh air!

No one is wrong in your situation but ask if you can have more blankets for overnight. Make hot chocolate/tea to warm you up from the inside in the day.

pointythings · 25/12/2025 09:07

Our house is normally at 17.5, but if people come over I will push it up to 20. The rest of the time I don't think it's reasonable or sensible to heat a house to the point where you run around in T-shirts as if it's summer - we all have warm layers and use blankets.

I don't do well in hot shops or restaurants, no.

itsthetea · 25/12/2025 09:08

17 is below the nhs and who guidelines for health for your lungs

you can’t put a jumper on your lungs

omggggggg · 25/12/2025 09:08

Do you not move around at home to get warm enough? I only get cold if I’m sitting around doing nothing. Fair enough I would increase the heat for guests though if you’re just sitting and chatting

So those who say 17 is perfect presumably cannot stand warmer restaurants, friend’s houses etc?

Yep, can't bear them. I'd feel suffocated. My heating is set at 14° and I'm fine with that. Can't bear the claustrophobia of central heating.

IsItSnowing · 25/12/2025 09:11

We have ours set at 19 during the day but it's just on a frost setting of 12 overnight. We also have the window open in our bedroom at night all year round. I don't think our house feels too cold.
Having said that, I'd turn it up if we had guests and they said they were cold. When my mum is here we always turn it up as she feels the cold more. It's not very hospitable to freeze your guests.

That's true! Other people's places always feel very warm.

I turned up at a pub last week wearing a vest, a short-sleeved top, a warm cardigan and a fleece jacket - standard attire for the interior of my home (except for the living room, where we have a woodburner). Within less than 2 minutes I had stripped off the fleece and the cardigan and was very glad that I hadn't chosen a Long-sleeved top!

CraftyChaos · 25/12/2025 09:12

That’s probably not dangerous, but it’s cold and miserable. If I was there, it would just stop me enjoying my time, which defeats the object of a Christmas visit. Stingy people will not compromise for guests. What can you do other than layer up and leave as soon as you can?

IsItSnowing · 25/12/2025 09:12

Yes, warm restaurants, shops etc make me claustraphobic too. I've never really understood why exactly but it's very real.

Littlegreenbauble · 25/12/2025 09:12

If you said 14 I would say yanbu. At 17, yabu. That's what fluffy hats and fleeces are for.

So you wear a fleece jacket every day at home, indoors? It’s not that you don’t feel the cold. It’s that you are choosing to live in a cold house?

Nitgel · 25/12/2025 09:13

Its not just a case of puttin on extra layers though. A cold.nose and face is awful unless i guess guests could wear.face masks and wooly hats. And boots.

Sorry but 17 is miserly.
It might be fine when you are moving around pottering doing jobs but lots of people will feel cold sat on the sofa at 17 degrees. Even with a jumper on I'd be cold.

Interesting that your equate people who prefer a cooler temperature with then being mean with money.

Can you explain why, I don't like my house to be too warm but it's nothing to do with the cost of the heating, it's the way my body is made.

CraftyChaos · 25/12/2025 09:13

Do you heat the house for friends and family?

purpleme12 · 25/12/2025 09:15

Personally I think it's absolutely warm enough.
It's within the acceptable temperature for babies as well

And yes I sleep with the window open
There's nothing wrong with that. Perhaps they can shut their door though if you ask them but why shouldn't they sleep with their window open

katepilar · 25/12/2025 09:15

It may be what they like but being nasty about it is wrong. 17 is low for many people.

Indoors? I would be mortified if I was making my guests wear fluffy hat indoors because I was too stingy to put the heating on.

Yes, ours is set for 17 and I get a headache if it goes higher.

Eudaimonia11 · 25/12/2025 09:18

I couldn’t stay somewhere that cold! My temperature at home is always set to 20 and that’s not hot, it’s just a liveable temperature.

They are a shit host and I’d be cutting my trip short if I were you. It’s horrible being cold just because someone is too tight to put the heating on.

If you know how to put it on, I’d just do it and chuck your family member a few quid to cover the extra cost. They’ll grumble but just go home as soon as you can.
