M&S have failed with their veggie Christmas food this year?

MandSLetDown · 22/12/2025 22:54

Nut roasts etc arrive in store only a few days before Christmas and sell out almost instantaneously. The very lovely store assistant said they could have sold at least 20 times the number they had in and she’s spoken to a lot of disappointed people.

Slim pickings for the rest of the its in the plant based Christmas range - literally only one or two single items on the shelf.

This is a huge M&S. Rest of store decently stocked. Staff working their socks off btw so no complaints there.

Why of why do M&S do this to themselves. It’s the same with size 12 or 14 jeans - never any available. Or the most common sizes in footwear.

The Cook nut roast is excellent (not vegan, though).

MrsLizzieDarcy · 23/12/2025 14:01

I'm also vegetarian and can't bear vegan food so it makes me hugely angry to get the two lumped together all the time. Vegan processed food is simply miserable.

Yes, I have noticed similar. But I think M&S need to have a ruddy good think about their veggie and vegan offerings.

My local M&S used to have a very good Plant Kitchen section. Clearly defined with all the products in one place. Then they decided to do the unthinkable…they mixed the Plant Kitchen in with the non-veggie food. So the PK no chicken kievs next to the chicken kievs in the meat section and so on.

So instead of heading to one section and choosing everything that I need quickly, I am expected to wander around the shop, hunting out the PK range. I do not have the time, nor the energy nor the inclination for such tomfoolery.

I now order everything online via Ocado which means that I do not pick up extra bits like I would have done when physically in a shop.

They’re also not thinking like non meat eaters

We don’t want to rummage around meat sections
Its upsetting
I won’t even walk down a meat aisle or if I have to it’s eyes forward walk quick.

Come on M&S if you’re reading this have a bit of curtesy and common sense

This is the first time I've encountered 'ambient' in this context on MN. I noticed on the Deliveroo Hop that it is used as the sole word in 'Description'.

My student shelf filling must have made its mark. Maybe there's a whole section on The Faerie Queen tucked away in there somewhere too. Not that it ever made as much of an impression as long life groceries.

DrCoconut · 23/12/2025 15:59

M&S cause issues by reducing their free from section massively during the pre Christmas period. I can get any number of tins of shortbread or weird flavoured pretzels that I cant eat but no rice crispies or bread rolls. I think they just took the pee with prices this year too.

Now try being vegetarian AND gluten free. 😁

I feel your pain. There's wheat and barley in everything and a growing tendency for people to be quite nasty to/about those of us who have to be gluten free.

Vegan Yule Logs you say. I did not know this.

They are real wood.

OhDear111 · 23/12/2025 16:18

If it’s not in the shops it’s because it doesn’t sell. Why not bake your own? Then it’s an easy shop. I don’t buy ready made anything!

They're hoping to convince meat-eaters to switch to meat-free offerings on occassion which is why they are intergrating the ranges.

Have they said this ??

Vegan options seem to fall into 2 camps: sells out before you have a chance to get it; or languishes in the reduced to clear section for weeks afterwards. I mean, I will attempt to get through as many Vegan Yule Logs Waitrose are willing to reduce to half price but I’m just one woman!

You are a real life heroine, @SusanChurchouse.

I've always found M&S veggie stuff shocking, it's extortionate for what you get.

I have 2 ALDI mini nut roasts with melting camembert in the middle. Lovely and about 3 quid.

I think a lot of people don’t want the melting cheese centre as part of a roast dinner. Like all the veggie Wellingtons with cheese in the middle.

Eh? I thought ambient food was that that doesn’t need refrigerating or freezing eg pasta and tins.

FunnyOrca · 23/12/2025 11:57

Completely agree!!!!

Our local M&S is a small food hall only. They sometimes have biscuits and sometimes don’t. The only product I was aware they still stocked was a ready meal lasagne. I went in looking for the single serve PK Christmas puddings (my family don’t do Christmas pudding but I always get one for husband) and randomly saw, next to actual bacon, PL bacon. I’ve been veggie my whole life. I know it’s a me problem and everything is hygienic etc, but meat disgusts me. There’s no way I’m picking up something from the meat section!!!

Also, shop assistant told me they were not getting the PK Christmas puddings. Only bigger stores and closer to Christmas. It makes no sense! I have always bought the single-serve PK pudding there since they made it and it has sold out there every year too!!

It’s worth checking regular Christmas pudding as a lot of them are vegan by accident.

It does. Any food that can be kept at room temperature, so packets and tins etc is ambient. It doesn’t mean that it plays nice twinkly music like you get in a spa.

Correct! Whilst that sounds absolutely delicious, I don’t want cheese in my main as we’re also having a very cheesy cauliflower cheese as a side.

Then they should dual locate. Not have a fully integrated range.

Absolutely incorrect! My husband bless him popped in again on the offchance today and the staff member said as soon as they get any in, they’re flying straight out.

Supported by many, many comments on this thread.

And I don’t want to bake my own, otherwise I would. It’s only me who is vegetarian (though other guests will eat the M&S one leftovers).

I thought the same op. Went into a huge one today expecting some options. No nut roasts to be seen....settled for a mushroom thing and a cauliflower cheese. I haven't even seen any actual nutroasts in any of the shops - they're always sold out

Did you get the two pack of the mushroom tart tartin @mcmuffin22? That’s what I’ve - reluctantly - settled for!
