Do you check your bank and credit card statements?

Inspired by a news item of someone who'd accidentally signed up for a subscription when buying some leggings. She only discovered 7 years later than she'd been paying £50 a month for a subscription to the company. The article then mentioned this had happened to a number of people.

It made me wonder how many people check their statements each month as I do.

Sorry, I thought I'd posted this in Chat.

Yes check credit card statements and check my current account several times a week. That’s bonkers someone didn’t notice for 7yrs! Did they get their money back?

Makemeanonymous · 22/12/2025 11:12

I put all my spending on my credit card and pay it off in full every month . So I keep a very vigilant eye on my credit card spending and check the running statement virtually every day.

There isn't really any reason for my current accounts to change during the month because I use the credit card but I look.at my main one a few times a week and check all of them at least at the beginning of the month.

I heard the story about the leggings subscription. Yet another story of unscrupulous retail tactics.

Yes, I used to live on a tiny budget, so I’m still kind of in that mindset so I’m still very careful with monitoring my spending. I would notice that much going out, I sometimes have to check my paypal as albums etc that I buy just appear as an apple purchase, so the odd small amount could get through there if I was buying a lot.

No, but I have notifications come up on my phone whenever a transaction is made, so I would see anything come out of my account anyway.

I check my banking apps every day - I don’t have a credit card as they aren’t a thing in Spain (your debit card can function as a credit card too). I’d certainly notice any transaction I hadn’t authorised pretty quickly!

InSpainTheRain · 22/12/2025 11:37

I check monthly, but receive a notification every time something goes out my account so always check at the time too. I also cancel any app subscriptions so I have to activate them again if I want them. Easy to forget if they are annual.

I never used to check very often or very thoroughly, until someone sent us some money for a birthday and I didn’t realise and they got upset about me not thanking them (don’t ask me why they didn’t tell me they’d sent it). But their surname is the same as my husbands first name eg Edward so when I did a brief scan of the account it just looked like a movement my husband did. So now I try to check a bit more thoroughly!

I check daily and I am astonished someone wouldn’t notice £50 a month Confused

SwirlyGates · 22/12/2025 12:16

I saw that article and couldn't believe how she'd spent THOUSANDS without noticing. Confused

Newyearawaits · 22/12/2025 12:20

Yes, I do check statements and regularly check balance on online banking. I need to do this to keep within my budget

EBearhug · 22/12/2025 12:40

Yes, frequently. I have previously questioned a payment which turned out to be legitimate but was a name that was nothing like the shop I had bought from. I've also picked up fraudulent use in the past.

One of my banking apps has a reminder that pops up every now and then to ask if I'm still using all my subscriptions. (Amazon Prime is the only one I have, and I don't really need it, but I use it just enough that I haven't cancelled yet )
