To think that being emotionally self-contained isn’t a flaw?

They say no man is an island but I honestly feel better when I’m in my own space, with my own thoughts, not constantly sharing everything or needing connection. I’m not cold or antisocial, just… internally anchored. Is it really so bad to be an island sometimes?

Except Barry.

No. It’s great.

Up to a point. Emotional self-reliance is definitely not a flaw and people who are overly emotionally expansive are exhausting. But being unable to communicate about really important things with those closest to you can be a problem for them and is probably not great for you.

The difference is between being emotionally avoidant and uncomfortable forming attachments and sabotaging relationships to avoid hurt, versus being self-contained and comfortable in your own company. As long as you can recognise the difference that's fine.

Can’t one be both?

Interesting to say this while posting on a public chat forum op!

Can’t one be both?

yes but it takes balance and trying to choose or restrict on how attached to be and what to share etc

I think you can be both, but one aspect is very damaging, and if you are using "self-contained" as a euphemism to ignore a side of your personality, which many do, then that isn't healthy.
