Period after a year

Kingscallops · 20/12/2025 23:55

Hi folks. I've not had children. Not had a period in a year. I'm 55 and I came on today. I was shocked because I thought I'd done with it. Should I see my GP?

Yes absolutely

Kingscallops · 21/12/2025 00:00

Thank you x my sister said to get checked out and I thought she was over worrying.

I had a period 6 months after I thought I'd finished with them but that was it then🤷‍♀️ I confess didn't enter my head to go to the GP😬 but was nearly 20 years ago!

Thanks for that. I'm bordering on is this 'normal' to believe you're over it or could you just have one more burst? I was so relieved after I'd got to the year stage

I’m sure they say post menopausal bleeding is not normal so should be checked out.

TinselTitts · 21/12/2025 00:08

If you're absolutely sure of your dates I would get it checked out.

I managed to get to 11 months, almost breathed a sigh of relief and then my bastard periods returned, like they were taunting me 😭

LiveToTell · 21/12/2025 00:09

Definitely should get it checked as it’s been over a year. I think that’s the recommendation?

It happened to someone I used to work with - she thought she’d had renewed periods because of a bad cough she had (I know, I know). She was later diagnosed with cervical cancer. Not at all saying this is your issue, but just pointing out how important it is to be checked.

It’s probably just one of those things, but it will make you feel better if you go.

Gottagetfitin26 · 21/12/2025 00:10

If it's been over 12 months you need to see a GP. Chances are it's fine, but better safe than sorry

Kingscallops · 21/12/2025 00:15

Thanks ever so much for your advice ladies. Xx

Referring to periods as bastards seems so right. You have been far more ladylike than me! X

It’s normal at your age. I also had a few weird ‘periods’ after having none for years.
That was about 5 years ago.

This is NOT normal and you need to get checked out.

OP chances are everything is fine but any bleeding even a bit of spotting after a year needs to be checked. You will be put on the 2 week pathway, don't panic ,it just means you'll get checked out quickly.

Thanks for putting my my mind at rest x it's so easy to jump to cervical cancer. I'm going to monitor this last bout.

I’m sorry but it definitely isn’t so please don’t say that to others online. I’m a nurse and in this age group it can be a major sign of something more sinister.

not that I want to scare you with that op because it may not be but I wanted to urge that it’s not exactly normal like this poster has said. I always think it’s better to get it checked and it be nothing, than not get checked and it be something 💖

Thank you. I'm going to see my GP after Christmas. Was just shocked today because I'd had a few 'period twinges' within the year that turned out to be false alarms. This one today felt different x

I had this about 3yrs ago and I came on here and searched for info.
Advice is that bleeding after a year should be investigated. I phoned our GPs and explained. I saw the practice nurse who didnt examine me as she immediately put me on the 2 week cancer check. Within 2 weeks.I had an internal scan then saw the consultant the following day, had an examination ( and smear at same time as was due).
Nothing was untoward on either exam, apparently it was probably caused by an 'explosion of hormones'. Perfectly well since.

Hopefully it won't be anything serious, but getting it checked early helps if it is something unexpected. I was obviously a bit worried but in the words of my DM theres no point in worrying until there's something to worry about.
Fingers crossed everything checks out OK x x

I had a few of those twinges and it ended up being a cyst which needed removing,it's not always cancer and sometimes it is just a last hurrah but must be checked out.

Ring the GP forget things Monday and get yourself booked in,don't leave it until after Xmas.

Thanks ever so much. I needed to talk to fellow women just for that comfort blanket. I will book an appointment just didn't think I'd be bothered by it a year on x

I’ve picked up on “explosion of hormones” @Mama2many73 as one consultant in exactly the same circumstances explained a “surge in hormones” to me. A couple of years later at a smear I mentioned a feeling of constipation, was found to have fibroids, referred to a different consultant (who was not impressed by his previous counterpart) and had a hysterectomy.
If you’ve been period-free for more than twelve months then have another make sure to be checked. It isn’t normal.

I'm going to get it checked out. Thank you x if I hadn't talked to my sister about it earlier, I would not have thought to ask on here. I'm hoping it's something less serious. Thanks again ❤️

Yes, this happened to me 14 months after my last period.

I was referred to the hospital by my doctor to be on the safe side and saw a lovely consultant. He said that it was probably just my body having ‘one last hurrah’ and there was nothing untoward to see (my doctor had also said this, but he also said that you can never be too careful, hence the referral).

I was told that I absolutely did the right thing in getting checked out though, so you’re doing the right thing for your own peace of mind.

Good luck x
