To think drunk drivers should lose their vehicles?

Just been reading about Latvia, they've had this law for 3 years and seized over 2,000 vehicles. They're either donated to Ukraine, or auctioned off to raise money for the police - one Ferrari was sold for 176,000 euros.

Why don't we do the same here? Stop pussyfooting around with fines and driving bans, just confiscate the bloody car as soon as the breath test is failed.

My dad was an alcoholic and crazy driver. As a terrified child sitting in the back I used to wish he'd get stopped. Losing his car would've been a quick and effective punishment, I think. So fucking tired of hearing about drink/drug drivers killing people.

Because the rich are the ones who drink drive 😄

youalright · 20/12/2025 19:32

Because couples often share cars. They lose there licence so no reason to lose car.

But losing their licence quite often doesn't stop them driving. The guy that killed the lad in London driving into the crowds, he was already banned from driving. Didn't stop him.

I assume Latvia has a way of dealing with cases where the car belongs to/is also needed by someone else. They can apply to get it back? Make the drinker pay the fee.

Eh, you shouldn’t lose your financial assets because you commit a crime. Unless proceeds of crime of crime of course. Not really fair is it, 1 person has a car worth £1k, another has one £80k.

Hufflemuff · 20/12/2025 19:39

Because we cant even work out the system we currently have in place? Imagine the work of creating some kind of government car auction house, building vehicle yards to store thousands of vehicles, police tow trucks to shunt cars about and all the administrative processes that go with all that shit.

A better idea would be a tracker on doormant cars - like a tag, that cant be removed from a vehicle. The vehicle is tagged to 1 location (like an ankle tag) and if it moves the police are straight there.

I think the car is more like a weapon in this case. No matter how much it's worth, you were using it dangerously and could've killed people.

What about cars on finance 🤔

I know what you mean in a sense and I dont agree with this idea - but if you have an 80k car then you should be even more careful with it surely?!

XenoBitch · 20/12/2025 19:41

My DF has driven drunk many times, and gets away with it. The car is my mum's though. She needs it for her job.

But it mostly does there are 2 types of people. Normal people who made a mistake who will not drive without a licence and criminals who will, people who will would just drive another car.

OonaStubbs · 20/12/2025 19:44

They should definitely do this. They should seize the houses of criminals as well.

What about the rest of the people living there? Partner and kids? Oh, and maybe a dog, because I know how much you love them.

LoyalMember · 20/12/2025 19:49

People should just take buses if they've had too much to drink. Last Christmas Eve I took a bus home at closing time. Which is pretty amazing, because I'd never driven a bus before.

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 20/12/2025 19:51

Sassy have to agree .

I think it's far rarer for drunks now but I too was a terrified child in the back of a car with drink divers

I dont see why not.

Don't do the crime if you dont want your car taken away

And when you have joint ownership of a car?

suburburban · 20/12/2025 19:57

I’d like it for uninsured drivers and those without a driving license

ThreeSixtyTwo · 20/12/2025 19:57

It's kind of more fair to confiscate the car than just issue financial penalty.
There is no fairness in fixed price penalties, because they are too much for some and too little for others.
Losing the car whatever is it's price makes the impact fairer.

Cars on finance can still be taken, the driver will be responsible to the finance company for the loss they caused.

And if someone else in the family needs it - tough. Maybe they should be able to get it back once and log that this driver isn't allowed to drive it anymore, but if you repeatedly allow someone else to drunk drive your car, you are enabling the crime.

More incentive to not tolerate criminality from family members. Or to kick them out of the house when they start committing crimes.

You can't blame drink driving on family members.

Perhaps then you are required to sell it. The government should not receive the proceeds of sale.

Seamond · 20/12/2025 20:06

A lot of people that have expensive cars are poorer people, richer people often have old cars
