To think drunk drivers should lose their vehicles?

Just been reading about Latvia, they've had this law for 3 years and seized over 2,000 vehicles. They're either donated to Ukraine, or auctioned off to raise money for the police - one Ferrari was sold for 176,000 euros.

Why don't we do the same here? Stop pussyfooting around with fines and driving bans, just confiscate the bloody car as soon as the breath test is failed.

My dad was an alcoholic and crazy driver. As a terrified child sitting in the back I used to wish he'd get stopped. Losing his car would've been a quick and effective punishment, I think. So fucking tired of hearing about drink/drug drivers killing people.

OP posts:

So make sure he doesn't drive your car while drunk, warn him that if he does, the car will be taken away.

Why doesnt the OP report him to The Police, he can go on the 'naughty' list and they will look out for him

Agree. There is a massive amount of complicity , hand wringing and excusing here.
How will the OP feels when this selfish individual kills a family ..
Gives a person on their way to work life changing injuries

My DF has driven drunk many times, and gets away with it. The car is my mum's though. She needs it for her job.

Complicit in the potential deaths of innocent people. Report to police
No excuses

GinaandGin · 21/12/2025 14:21

XenoBitch · 20/12/2025 20:15

They don't though. Drunks don't think. So why should the other owners of the car be punished?
Like I said, my dad is a cock and drink drives sometimes. My mum uses their car for her job.
If he was caught and the car destroyed, my mum would be stuffed.

He needs to be caught before he kills someone

SassyPearlEagle · 20/12/2025 19:37

I assume Latvia has a way of dealing with cases where the car belongs to/is also needed by someone else. They can apply to get it back? Make the drinker pay the fee.

You do realise there’s a hardcore of disqualified drivers with no license, no tax, no MOT, no insurance, who use false plates and just go and obtain another car anyway when they get caught?

As has been pointed out by a recent road justice report they should be getting substantial jail time but we don't have a government with balls

alternatively, we don't have an electorate with the balls.

Even on this thread you have a sense of quite a few posters for whom it's no bid deal and who would fall for the sob stories about how cruel it is to take someones licence away when it's the only way they can work yadda yadda yadda.

I mean I'd happily take someones licence away for speeding (which also kills). But instead we have a 4 strikes and you're out system. And I'd happily see summary execution for littering .....

You can anonymously email the local police the car registration and your concerns

Agree 100% ..
Those getting caught drunk driving ..
I VERY much doubt it's the first time they've done it.
Australia have pop up roadside check points. Would love to see it in the UK

I live no where near them I and don't know their number plate.
He does not drive often as the car is often out as my mum is driving it.
So if something happens then don't blame me. It would be his fault and his fault alone.

I think a device that is part of the ignition that wont let you start the car if you are over the limit would be a good idea.
I wonder if any are in the works.

And when the drink driver gets someone else to blow into it for them ?

I can only speak for myself but I would not be getting in a car where the driver was knowingly drunk, and I would refuse to blow into it for them.

OonaStubbs · 20/12/2025 19:44

They should definitely do this. They should seize the houses of criminals as well.

They do this is Ireland.

Edit for clarity: They seize property bought with the proceeds of crime.

Boomer55 · 21/12/2025 16:14

If it’s a shared car with a spouse, why should they lose it?

scalt · 21/12/2025 16:17

The question is not radical enough. It should be: “wealthy career criminals for whom prison is a temporary inconvenience should have their millions, multiple houses, luxury cars and yachts seized”. And I include Boris Johnson among those criminals.

A carpenter I know regularly smokes weed on his way to work , van not taxed for over a year and no mot

Maybe they could, but they would be fucking stupid to do that. But having such a device would be better than nothing.

Surely you know their address
You can report that and police will be able to find reg.
Must be nice not having a conscience

What will that process look like? I call up every 2 days just in case my dad is out in the car? he is not always drunk, and he is not always driving. He in usually in bed.
I will get done for wasting police time if they just repeatedly find my mum in the car instead, or the car parked up outside their house. It would just come across as a malicious reports.
Really, it would be up to my mum as she knows when he is drinking etc.

My dad is a alcoholic. You do not put the responsibility of that on other people.

No it would not if you put in your report to look out for a male.

Simple email to the police with the details will take 5 mins

I wont be doing that. The police would have to be camped out on their road as he uses the car for the 10 second drive to the shop. He is too lazy to walk up the hill. He gets the bus if my mum as the car.
His drinking is not my responsibility.
