I judge anybody wearing a dry robe as a coat

Judging other people illustrates how insecure you are about your own place in society. Very sad but very typical of posters on this forum.

The very best dog walking coat I’ve ever found is Seasalt Janelle. Mines lasted me years. It’s long enough (with longer, Parker style back), deep pockets and hood which do right up. Fleece-lined. I walk my dogs on the moors in all weathers and it keeps me totally dry and cosy.

Staringintothevoid616 · 19/12/2025 08:44

The hoods are a bit rubbish they are designed to stop you getting things wet rather than the other way round!

Goto a good outdoor shop and get yourself a decent waterproof.

TheChosenTwo · 19/12/2025 08:44

Mine was worth it, I use it twice a week in the winter after my cold water swims, I use it to whip my wet stuff off underneath and dash to the car to drive home.
I don’t wear it otherwise though, it’s massive - designed I think for being able to get changed under - I have other coats and jackets for going out and about.

Go to an outdoor shop and get ones which are designated ‘waterproof’ and not ‘showerproof’. There’s a difference.

And breathable!!

PlazaAthenee · 19/12/2025 08:50

I have the cheaper mountain warehouse option. It's very warm and dry. I only wear it for parkrun marshaling and walking with friends in winter. I tried using it for changing after sea swimming in summer and it was way too hot.

But, if I had a small dawdly dog it would be perfect for cold days.

I'm a Pony mum, so I have the Equidry. Everyone on my yard loved it so much that we all have one now. My ten year old also has one and its the best bit of waterproof kit I own. Worth every penny

Second this. I've got 2 equidry now - a lightweight & heavy weight.

Way more practical for walking, yard work etc as better designed for that. Dry robes are more oversized changing robes for swimming, surfing etc.

I think reincoat actually market themselves towards dog walkers & outdoor activities rather than just horse owners now.

Yesimmoaningaboutbenefits · 19/12/2025 09:00

I have the Oodie version. Incredibly warm (but doesn't get too hot like usual synthetic monstrosities). Keeps you bone dry. I've been walking in some really heavy downpours in it, for up to 30 mins, and stayed perfectly dry underneath.

I tried on lots of different brands @TheOpalFox and ended up with a ‘two bare feet’ one. Very pleased. They are on Amazon.

Just interested as I may buy one (having managed winter swimming for years with just a changing towel, but I get insanely cold sometimes) do you use it
post-sea or just as general wear? I want maximum warmth and also something waterproof. Thanks

This made me laugh!

Very honest of you. Why though - is a person in a dry robe a wanker?

I don't have one but i see people out in them round here (loooong way from the sea!) and are a bit envious on days like today !

Just to clarify, I don't think they were wankers and it was so cosy and warm, although a bit cumbersome, I just didn't want to appear on the FB page saying I'm a wanker! It seems to have eased off now, they are now saving their vitriol for Tentbox Wankers 🙄

Sadza · 19/12/2025 09:16

I have one. They are great for changing under, waterproof and wind proof. I wouldn’t wear it for walking as I’d rather have a proper breathable coat. The lining is quite synthetic feeling and not as soft as it looks, the salt from the sea leaches to the outside. Also takes a while to dry after swimming…..I turn it inside out and it on the line. I think there are good alternatives out there too…

Mines a Regatta one but I love it for dog walking and watching the kids football and general pottering. Warm, dry and room for layers if I need them. It replaced a Seasalt Janelle which I did love but the pocket zip broke and it had started to scuff at the seams.

Edited

I’ve seen the Wolf fleece Facebook page when scrolling by and as you say the tent box one.

BinLorries · 19/12/2025 09:38

I have only worn one once when someone lent me theirs when I was caught out without a coat — I was obviously very grateful at the time, but I can’t imagine it being practical for anything other than its original purpose. As a pp said, you can’t see your feet under the voluminous fabric, so easy to lose your footing.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/12/2025 09:47

I think everyone is right to say they are best worn for their intended purpose - ie putting on after outdoor swimming.

I’m sure they’re fine for standing in the rain watching stuff if you wear wellies or similar too, but they’re not great for actually doing anything, as they’re long and not the right shape for eg long walks or any kind of active pursuits.

For that, a good quality raincoat is better.

We go on holiday to Wales quite a lot, and you see English tourists wearing them looking miserable in the rain, as they aren’t the right thing. Plus people seem to team them with crocs which is ridiculous.

I’m think of getting one for my DS to wear after swimming though.

I wore it all through the winter after swimming and a couple of times as general outdoor wear. Not worn it much this autumn/winter (not swimmimg at the moment). It hasn’t been cold enough to need it for general wear.

one thing to check when buying - a lot of them can’t be bunged in the washing machine, so check the care instructions.

BigButtons · 19/12/2025 11:59

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing I can happily walk for miles in mine 🤷🏻‍♀️

StarDolphins · 19/12/2025 12:07

I have the knock off regatta one because I was totally fed up of being wet. I don’t like that they’re everywhere and I resisted because of this but it’s great, keeps me completely dry and I don’t care wha anyone thinks!

Konstantine8364 · 19/12/2025 12:38

I have an equidry, with is a similar horse version. I don't wear mine loads, I find it too bulky for day to day. But there is nothing better if you have to stand around in the rain! I also do a bit of wild swimming so use it then. Whale watching in Iceland it was perfect. It's also fab for sitting around in the evening when camping. Mine was a present and I probably wouldn't have bought it for myself, but I do use it, just not all the time.

I looked at them - it’s not fully fleece lined though. There’s still lining that I’m unable to tolerate. I really liked the look of them as well. I ended up getting a DryRobe - although it’s not the branded one. I’d really like a smarter long waterproof for work but the linings have been awful these past few years, so I’ve really struggled.

Hankunamatata · 20/12/2025 13:34

Iv a regatta one i got in the sale and love it. Perefect for waching kids games and keeping dry.

bertomi · 20/12/2025 17:45

@Idontjetwashthefucker Let them. That’s my new go to thought process. Who cares what others think?
