Is this really enough food? Fed up of DH’s tightness

To give some background, I live with DH and our DD. We have two sons who are at Uni and will be returning to ours ahead of the weekend for Christmas.

For the first night they are back, we thought it would be good to have party food so DH went out to get this earlier. We are both busy the next two days so this was the only opportunity - we also live very rurally so can’t just pop down the round for a shop.

He has come back with the following:

-2 lots of ‘3 for 2’ party food so 6 in total - things like breaded prawns and spring rolls. Not massive portions at all
-Two share bags of crisps
-Olives and a small pack of antipasto (salami etc)

Now, both DS’ are 6 foot plus rugby playing young men. They eat us out of house and home at the best of times. DD is really slender but has a healthy appetite too.

I don’t know what DH was thinking - I’d clearly said to buy double that amount of party food. Having discussed with him, it comes down to money which is ridiculous. He earns six figures which is complimented by my own salary and we have ample disposable income.

He maintains its sufficient food for the 5 of us. AIBU to disagree?

Ok, now I know you're taking the piss

It was obvious from the first post. I can’t believe some posters are taking it seriously. They must be new.

Whereismyfleeceblanket · 17/12/2025 22:09

Nuts and seeds? They're op's dc not her budgies....

sprigatito · 17/12/2025 22:11

Chazbots · 17/12/2025 21:49

So this is only a symptom, not the issue....

If it's cycling, golf or fishing, then it's not outing. It's only if it's luging, medieval sword fighting, horse jousting or some other exceptionally niche sport would it be an issue.

Deeper problems by the sounds of it. Msg the DC and get them to shop on the way home.

MSG the DC 😱😱😱

I knew MN was a hotbed of wanton gluttony, but never did I think I would see a mother advised to roll her children in Chinese seasoning and serve them up as dinner!

Wow. Just…wow.

DH is now claiming he doesn’t remember me saying how many items we’d need. I often wonder if he has got early onset dementia sometimes!

OP posts:
FurForksSake · 17/12/2025 22:12

Has he bought any drinks to go with it? Personally we only drink water because we don’t drink calories, but perhaps some effervescent alcohol-free options might fill the tummies?

Alycie · 17/12/2025 22:13

Definitely more food needed. Can’t you ask your boys to buy some groceries to bring on their way home? Xx

Or even better, alcohol.

How unattractive. I'd tell your sons to eat before they come home, since their dad is too cheap to feed them properly. I'd be mortified.

I’ve arranged a post Christmas spa day for me and a friend. Screw him, he can sort the food out in my absence and take the stick from the DC.

There’s nothing less attractive than a miserly man. Someone earning six figures and denying their kids and wife enough food to eat is the absolute pits.

aneelli · 17/12/2025 22:15

Defo not enough but can’t get over the fact that they won’t be served an actual meal, I’d feel sick eating all that frozen stuff. I can’t believe someone on six figures with lots of disposable income is denying his family eating well

Kindly, this sounds a bit tragic. We are well stocked with booze fortunately - for his flaws, DH isn’t shy to purchase some fine French wine.

Doesn’t alcohol make people want to eat more? I’m sure people often go to fast food places or Tesco express after drinking don’t they? It might not help matters.

Perhaps eggnog? That’s like alcoholic custard I believe? It may kill two birds with one stone?

ApplesinmyPocket · 17/12/2025 22:18

I know OP lives rurally (as do I, and also suffer from no Dominos etc deliveries ) but surely she must have basics in, like, as others have said, bread, butter, ham, cheese? which would fill quite a few gaps nicely here?

Baked jacket potatoes with butter? those are lovely.

Or just ask (as others have said) the DC to bring something each to supplement the fancier stuff.

Amateur. Over 2 hours from first posting and you’ve only booked a spa day. You could have left him by now in a fast moving, live thread such as this.

It takes time to line up one’s poultry, although I don’t think that’s appropriate here.

@ThePerfectTimeToPanic I was literally thinking the same thing. Just missing a chicken that last a week and it’s BINGO!

FurForksSake · 17/12/2025 22:23

Could your daughter cook some food? Perhaps a trifle? I’m sure you’ve got an old Swiss roll and some jam in the cupboard and the custard takes mere moments to knock together.

ChaliceinWonderland · 17/12/2025 22:25

Is he usually this mean ? Just order a delivery, that's going to be sad get-together. My 15 year would eatbthatnby himself.

She mentioned trying to get to shops herself on Friday. She is a student so no regular income but has taken in ironing a lot this year and says she wants to treat us.

Leave DH to it but do a back up and freeze it to bail your boys out if they are hungry. Try chicken and chorizo soup made with yellow peppers, tinned tomatoes and stock, quick, easy and delicious, can be a stew too, serve with rice. Good luck
