Is this really enough food? Fed up of DH’s tightness

To give some background, I live with DH and our DD. We have two sons who are at Uni and will be returning to ours ahead of the weekend for Christmas.

For the first night they are back, we thought it would be good to have party food so DH went out to get this earlier. We are both busy the next two days so this was the only opportunity - we also live very rurally so can’t just pop down the round for a shop.

He has come back with the following:

-2 lots of ‘3 for 2’ party food so 6 in total - things like breaded prawns and spring rolls. Not massive portions at all
-Two share bags of crisps
-Olives and a small pack of antipasto (salami etc)

Now, both DS’ are 6 foot plus rugby playing young men. They eat us out of house and home at the best of times. DD is really slender but has a healthy appetite too.

I don’t know what DH was thinking - I’d clearly said to buy double that amount of party food. Having discussed with him, it comes down to money which is ridiculous. He earns six figures which is complimented by my own salary and we have ample disposable income.

He maintains its sufficient food for the 5 of us. AIBU to disagree?

Could you transfer some money to one of your DSs and ask him to buy some extra food on his way home?

soupyspoon · 17/12/2025 20:09

Trouble with these threads is it brings out the competitive over eaters

A 12 year old would eat all that on their own. Really. Really.

soupyspoon · 17/12/2025 20:10

If he is worried about money also, Lidl and Aldi do brilliant stuff like that, good value, and good quality

Personally I also like a lot of flavoured stuffings, love that stuff and I put quite a lot in the freezer to last me the year because you cant but it at any other time of the year, but the point is they also make good snacks, also trays of pigs in blankets, my OH eats those.

converseandjeans · 17/12/2025 19:58

You probably need something to add to that - maybe a couple of pizzas or a cheeseboard with some nice bread.

Yes, but obviously the DH won’t be eating them, or, rather, he’d better not try to, and I suggest only bringing the extra out when the other food is finished and your sons are still hungry

Natty13 · 17/12/2025 20:12

If he is insistant it's enough food then let the DC and yourself fill your plates first and leave him to whatever is left. Men only learn from consequences. Plus why should everyone else skimp and go hungry because of his tightness?

Luckyingame · 17/12/2025 20:12

Not enough, obviously, but he might be just clueless, rather than tight.

bridgetreilly · 17/12/2025 20:13

It’s fine for nibbles but not for dinner.

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 17/12/2025 20:14

That's an 'amuse bouche'. Of course its not enough. Presumably he's taking you all out or gettign a take away and this is just an appetiser ???

cakebreak · 17/12/2025 20:15

Those little packets are pricey way to shop to be fair
Bulked out with chips and salad I reckon that's about right.
(We have 4 children including 2 strapping tee age boys)

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 17/12/2025 20:16

Sounds like barely anything! I wouldn't even really count the olives. You definitely need some pizzas, pasta or bread and cheeses or something.

winterwarmer8274 · 17/12/2025 20:16

Get one of your sons to pop into a shop on the way home and pick up some pizzas / garlic bread

GrassMarketeer · 17/12/2025 20:19

I actually think this is ok for the pre-made party food element. It's often quite greasy and rich and usually presented as small tasters, not a hearty meal.

Maybe your DH is thinking of adding olive bread, sourdough or rye bread, cheeses, nice crackers, hummus, wnipped feta, some lovely small tomatoes etc.

Saving the budget for that!😀

Overthebow · 17/12/2025 20:20

Have you got any store cupboard things like stuffing mix you could make into balls, or bread mix that you could make some rolls with to bulk it out? I think it would be fine with a filler like those.

frozendaisy · 17/12/2025 20:20

Send him back out with a list

This has to be peak MN 😂

Ooh or a bowl of Yorkshire puddings if you have eggs flour and milk?

TheTowerAtMidnight · 17/12/2025 20:21

Are your six-foot rugby playing sons twins by any chance? 🤔

No they are a couple of years apart in age

It’s plenty of the “party food” type stuff but I’d serve a fondue with plenty of bread or a cheeseboard in addition. Failing that, bag of frozen potato wedges and frozen onion rings

CombatBarbie · 17/12/2025 20:22

DappledThings · 17/12/2025 20:03

Doesn't seem that bad. 1.5 sharing things each plus cold meats and crisps. It's not overflowing but it's not noticeably mean either I don't think.

Did you miss the part about 6ft odd rugby players. Id serve that if I was having a mate or 2 round, not for 5 adults with appetites

He was in M&S and in his words they had plenty but he didn’t think it was good value.

We don’t usually buy this sort of UPF apart from treats, I try to cook from scratch as much as possible and he knows this was our only chance to get the shop done this week. So I’ll have to supplement with some healthier stuff and put up with the moaning.

Given where we live it’s not easy to get an online delivery either.

It’s no where near enough but if you don’t have the ability to get another shop in then it may be manageable. What do you have in the cupboard/freezer?

If you’ve got a decent store hoard of basics then you could make up (or have DH make up)

Rough puff pastry for

  • cheese straws
  • cheese and onion mini pasty type things or cheese and bacon if you have it, or if you have mince you could do Cornish pasty
  • jam tarts

Pan of man n cheese, then to ‘party food’ it, scoop into cupcake cases and bake it in the oven for a bit so it sets as little mac n cheese cupcakes

If you have eggs then you can do egg muffins which work well with party food, fry off or par boil any veg you like, put it in a muffin tin, mix eggs with a dash of milk and seasoning. Pour into muffin tin, bake in oven till set.

Jesus what a load of faff, the whole point of party food is its processed and oven ready and easy to eat and slap on the table. Presumably if OP wanted to make a load of stuff she wouldnt have sent him out for prepped party food.

I didn't miss it but this is why DH doesn't trust me to do any catering generally. It still doesn't sound that lacking to me.

StudentDays · 17/12/2025 20:27

That's the starter sorted 😂

This is classic parent approach- when I was younger and would go to my DF and step-mums, the portions were what I would call older people's portions sizes. It's like they collectively forgot that younger people have bigger appetites!

Lol ok. My ex was a chef and used to cook for the 5000 so there's always extremes. Party packs are only 6-8 pieces and a small antipasti.....that would cause ww3 in my house because everyone loves the salami, Spanish ham and cheese. I eat one easily to myself.
