I have always opened door number 1 one on the 1st of December but dd says I’m doing it wrong and you’re meant to be counting down so you open the door of how many days until Christmas.
Is she right and I’ve done this wrong all my life?
How do open yours?

Of course you start at 1.
It coincides with the day of the month, surely?

iwishihadaname · 17/12/2025 11:39

You are right back in the day when there was only paper advent calendars the largest most important picture was always 24 usually a nativity

AFavourPlease · 17/12/2025 11:39

Has to be 1. You always get the special chocolate on Christmas Eve.

SwingTheMonkey · 17/12/2025 11:42

Of course you start at door number 1! The biggest/best treat is always behind door number 24 - you wouldn’t start with the best item. I’m baffled that there are people who have voted against you op!

I was just discussing this with DS today.
Yes, you’re right - start at no.1, but he was saying next year he’s going to start at 24 and count down.
I mean, it doesn’t make a lot of difference so why not 🤷‍♀️

DS pointed out he’d rather have the special chocolate on the first. To celebrate the start of Christmas/advent. There are plenty of other treats on Christmas Eve.

Of course it's 1 you start with

CocoPlum · 17/12/2025 11:47

I have the Cadbury one which starts saying "10 days to go" on 15th.

DD's malteser one has a larger treat on the 24th.

I have the Exit game calendar, the first door is marked "1" and if you number them counting down, you'll get the wrong answers if the game relies on the door numbers.

All of which suggests you are right, you start at 1!

MissFritton65 · 17/12/2025 11:49

If you start on 24, surely it's very tricky to remember which door is next! At least starting on 1 you can just check the date.

Baby2duejuly2026 · 17/12/2025 11:50

You start at 1. Some of the calandars even have doors that say things like 10 days to go! At day 15
