Disaster with Autism and Secondary School

DS is 11, currently looking at Secondary School options. He is very intelligent, loves learning and is currently above average in school assessments. He has a diagnosis of ASD and ADHD, and is starting to struggle with the demands of Year 6 (mainly with the work load and less down time). He does not have an EHCP, I’ve enquired repeatedly about whether he warrants one and been told he doesn’t come anywhere close to reaching the 12 hours a week threshold for extra support.

Our local Secondary School is 1,800 students, I feel this is too big for him and he will struggle with the transitions, teachers won’t know his needs, too many kids etc. His teachers also agree and think he needs a much smaller setting which can only be achieved at a private school. We can afford private school - just - but it will mean huge lifestyle changes for the next 5 years, zero savings, holidays etc. My husband thinks we need to give the massive secondary school a chance but I think it’s doomed for failure and will effect his self-esteem negatively.

It’s also worth mentioning that I work with autistic and neurodiverse teenagers and I see so many of them struggling at school, burning out and being home schooled or not having any education as a result. I also hear mostly negative stories about autistic teenagers in mainstream secondary schools, and even ones who’ve gone to private struggle (albeit less).

Has anyone got a positive story or any advice?

Both my Adult kids and four Grandkids all ASD/ ADHD/ Asperges/ ND
. All home educated after primary school.. except youngest who only did nursery.
My daughters and three eldest Grandsons did GCSE'S and all got 6 to 9 at the two highest levels. One now at uni.. two in college.
Secondary/ High schools in our area are horrendous for SEN kids.. their MH especially.

Not positive I'm afraid no. The opposite unfortunately. DD is AuADHD and went to 3 different secondaries. They treat everyone the same, there's a blanket detention / isolation culture for all, they don't make exceptions for MH, neurodiversity. DD spent most of her time in the pastoral office, or coming home as she felt "ill" due to mean kids and mean staff, a lot of who seemed to get a kick out of asserting their control.
Wish we could have afforded private for her. Son went private as had a full scholarship for gcse's and the students were treated with more respect.

Is it likely a child will get an EHCP if the school doesn’t support the application?

It is possible to get EHCPs without the school’s support.

Hi OP

My daughter is autistic and started mainstream (very large) secondary this year.

It has been a car crash.

They failed to put in even the most basic of support - and she HAS an Ehcp!! A really detailed one. She also missed a lot of school in primary and had a one to one TA with her every morning - literally NOTHING put in place for her at secondary despite plenty of promises.

She is barely attending, it takes enormous effort to get her in just to sit in the Sen 'hub' on a beanbag reading a book or doing crafts. All well and good - but no learniing is taking place!

I cannot stress enough that mainstream secondary for a child already struggling at primary is a disaster.

however.

I can't possibly say whether private is right - it would not be right for my child as she wants to be at her local school with her friends.

We are stuck in a very stressful situation because I don't see a simple alternative.

Start the EHCP process but have a plan B. EHCP's are absolutely not the golden ticket people think they are anyway. We get nothing that is on ours without a huge fight - and currently on the route to legal help and tribunal just to get some real support in place.
