Youngsters now days are very entitled

Is it just me or are younger people now days very entitled? I work in an industry that often attracts lots of younger people mainly early 20’s ( im in my 50’s btw). Im noticing more and more that they have lots of entitlement and some bad manners/lack of social skills as well as a terrible work ethic. For balance i have 4 dc ranging from 20-30 years old and while all 4 have excellent manners the younger had a really bad attitude towards work for a year or two but is now a very hard worker and the elder 3 always have been. Anyway back to my fellow employees. They seem to know every single one of their rights but not so much about their responsibilities, they lack social skills and manners as well. Will happily talk over people during conversations, pick and choose what work they want to do, have appalling customer service skills and will never agree that something is their fault or they have done something wrong. My work is based heavily on seniority and usually the more senior a member of staff they get first choice in certain aspects of it. However the younger staff seem to completely disregard this and often push themselves to the front for these things and show absolutely no respect to those who have worked there for years ( fwiw im also very junior). Im finding it harder and harder to tolerate and beginning to detest having to work with them, but im wondering if its actually a “ thing” that others have noticed or its me and my perimenopause? 🙄

But they don’t have morals about work. Why would they when they can’t afford anything? Why would they work Christmas when they get paid shit wages and can’t afford to buy a house? They’re aren’t in it for the company or the team. Not like people used to be.

Yeah they have a choice where to work. They’ll work there but won’t work Christmas. You’ve also got a choice whether to keep them or not.

Seniority gets the best jobs. Work Christmas for no extra pay. Those days don’t exist for Gen Z. It’s an old model.

Edited

Tbh I would work regardless just to keep a good attitude for myself and not slip into bad habits and look for a new job asap. I also wouldn't ruin work relationships because yep, you happen to cross paths with people again.

You spoke of things that the seniors are supposed to get first dibs on but juniors are pushing forward to do. That was before your whinge about Christmas,

i can’t explain because its outing but there are certain things its considered good company etiquette to allow seniors to take their pick of first and many of the younger generation have no qualms about pushing in to the front of the queue. The Christmas working literally applies to everyone from the bottom to the top.

They should have decency towards their colleagues though. If you are that miserable then go find work elsewhere that pays more.

Well the colleagues could do the same? That would maybe sort out the shitty wages?

SeaAndStars · 16/12/2025 19:57

It's really hard to imagine why mentioning the industry will be outing.

Surely nobody is going to think ahhh, that's that Beryl from customer services at Acme Corps if you just say the industry is mushroom picking, yacht building or hair net manufacture?

Perimenoanti · 16/12/2025 19:57

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 16/12/2025 19:54

Why, because they won’t tow the company line for shite wages?

Cringe away.

Because it takes something to sign a contract knowing you are going to call in sick at Christmas because you don't agree with the pay. They can decide to not tow the company line by getting another job. Oh wait....

Good for them.

Good company etiquette🤮based on outdated working expectations.

This first pick thing could be made equal so everyone gets their turn. But I suspect some of the older and young ones don't want that. Doubt it's just the seniors.

But most people aren’t miserable with their job or the industry…just entitled, lazy, rude colleagues.

For this 'pushing in to the front of the queue' to be continuing the senior staff must be letting them get away with it across the board. Why is that?

It sounds like they’re getting to the Christmas chocs before these senior managers

and seriously - if these manager can’t address what’s pissing then off… well the company sounds utterly shite from top to bottom

Well I’m suprised on those wages. How do you know they’re happy? I bet they’re not.

I was on 17k with a car at 26 in 1989. I was very happy. And l didn’t work Christmas or have seniority contests for the best bits of the job.

You’re not paying much more than that now.

Enduser1 · 16/12/2025 20:02

Themagicfarawaytreeismyfav · 16/12/2025 19:28

Nope it was put down as a “ refusal of a duty” on their record.

Ok so finally it sounds like it’s being addressed

so if this person does it again… the disciplinary wheels begin to grind in to motion

although perhaps the senior managers pee themselves at the prospect

Enduser1 · 16/12/2025 20:04

You are very junior
They are very junior
This is a low paid industry
There is a weird very stale heirarchal structure in your passive company

No wonder they are taking the piss

Tigerbalmshark · 16/12/2025 20:04

Oh come on OP, think back to your 20s. There have always been rude arrogant twats in the workplace. Maybe your new industry just attracts more of them.

ilovesooty · 16/12/2025 20:07

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 16/12/2025 19:15

This is what l think.

Im quite admiring of them trying to upset
the apple cart.

I wonder if this means senior colleagues get first dibs on Christmas leave. Poor practice if so.

ilovesooty · 16/12/2025 20:11

Themagicfarawaytreeismyfav · 16/12/2025 19:48

No the Christmas working applies to absolutely everyone.

Absolutely equally, regardless of time served?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 16/12/2025 20:12

I think senior managers can be incredibly naive. They always think people are happy when they’re not. Just because people don’t say so.

They think because it’s expected to work Christmas people will do it happily because it’s in the contract.

I think you probably have some very resentful and unhappy people in your team due to the dire wages and conditions. Read between the lines.

Floogal · 16/12/2025 20:39

How about entitled 50-60 somethings who it appears, are coasting until retirement? Seen that myself (alongside entitled younger workers).

FlatWhiteOrLatte · 16/12/2025 20:54

Sometimes it's the job that can attract certain types of people, rather than an age thing. I know you don't want to say but sounds like you're cabin crew or a job that has a similar culture. The ones who have good work ethic are more likely to stay and become "senior" later down the line but those who see it as a "vacation" or "easy" job will behave the way you've described.

People have been making this complaint since ever. Its the 'entitlement' of younger generations in the workplace that has helped increase work life balance amd benefits over time and long may it last.
