Youngsters now days are very entitled

Themagicfarawaytreeismyfav · 16/12/2025 17:51

Is it just me or are younger people now days very entitled? I work in an industry that often attracts lots of younger people mainly early 20’s ( im in my 50’s btw). Im noticing more and more that they have lots of entitlement and some bad manners/lack of social skills as well as a terrible work ethic. For balance i have 4 dc ranging from 20-30 years old and while all 4 have excellent manners the younger had a really bad attitude towards work for a year or two but is now a very hard worker and the elder 3 always have been. Anyway back to my fellow employees. They seem to know every single one of their rights but not so much about their responsibilities, they lack social skills and manners as well. Will happily talk over people during conversations, pick and choose what work they want to do, have appalling customer service skills and will never agree that something is their fault or they have done something wrong. My work is based heavily on seniority and usually the more senior a member of staff they get first choice in certain aspects of it. However the younger staff seem to completely disregard this and often push themselves to the front for these things and show absolutely no respect to those who have worked there for years ( fwiw im also very junior). Im finding it harder and harder to tolerate and beginning to detest having to work with them, but im wondering if its actually a “ thing” that others have noticed or its me and my perimenopause? 🙄

I'm afraid you are going to have to step back and let issues emerge. Management will not act if things get done anyway. So they will receive more complaints and then that's their issue to address not yours. Same when one disappears. You just continue at your normal pace and the rest won't get done.

I agree with all apart from the last sentence. It has to be done no matter what, so it just takes far longer and is more stressful than it needs to be.

Snore. This was a cliche millenia ago.

This is what l think.

Im quite admiring of them trying to upset
the apple cart.

But it doesn’t affect senior management in any way…it just makes them very unpopular with their fellow colleagues.

How much do you pay for working Christmas?

The issue is that some people are entitled and think their needs and wants trump those of their colleagues. Selfish behaviour. What if the whole place went off sick at Christmas?

Themagicfarawaytreeismyfav · 16/12/2025 19:28

Enduser1 · 16/12/2025 19:12

And the company said “sure take it as sick leave”?

Nope it was put down as a “ refusal of a duty” on their record.

We don’t get extra, we get certain benefits though. It is part of our contract that we sign when we accept the job.

Why do you expect them to work Christmas then? They just won’t. They’re not wet behind the ears.

If you paid double which is what used to happen 30 years ago they’d probably work. But they won’t be taken for mugs and l can’t say l blame them.

The workplace needs to catch up with their thinking. They’re never going to grub for someone else like previous generations a.

Exactly this…we ALL have to take turns doing it. None of us enjoy it but we signed up for it. They also know full well they are ruining someone else’s Christmas but genuinely don’t give a shit.

This should have been raised with the company before they signed a contract agreeing to it. It’s not ok to be selfish and dump other people in it no matter how old you are.

No, but they don’t care. So how will it be changed for next year?

They’re don’t care about what’s right or expected. Especially if they don’t get paid much.

Is it being selfish to not work on a national bank holiday for no extra wages? I’m not sure that it is. Contract or no contract. It’s selfish not to pay them for it. The other employees are at fault for accepting these conditions as normal.

People don’t go into this industry for big money! The pay is notoriously bad. We get other perks though and i believe you have to take the smooth with the rough. It won’t be changed for next year but the company are now cracking down on sanctions for people calling in sick at xmas which means the small number of genuinely ill will suffer!

Pay peanuts get monkeys.

No way would l work or expect my dc to work Christmas for notoriously bad wages.

Listen to yourself! “yeah we pay crap wages but expect 100% commitment for a few perks’

No way.

And l’m 62 and worked all my life. I hated that attitude.

Perimenoanti · 16/12/2025 19:44

What's the wage just roughly?

So don't take the job if you aren't prepared to stick to the rules. No generation is exempt.

Well respectfully that’s your choice. Its an industry wide thing and its something that you are made fully aware of when you sign up for the job. The perks are actually really good and imo you can’t be happy to take the perks and then dump other people in the shit when it’s your turn to work Christmas. Thats just decent morals imo.

Its standard practice in my area of employment…across all companies.

”We’ve done it that way for centuries, thus it shall remain”

Basically the juniors are given the shitty end of the stick, which isn’t actually, officially, what should happen, and the youngsters push back on that.

Well done to them for that.

Themagicfarawaytreeismyfav · 16/12/2025 19:47

Perimenoanti · 16/12/2025 19:44

What's the wage just roughly?

£21,000 basic full time, with extras ie shift pay probably around 25-27,000 full time.

But they don’t have morals about work. Why would they when they can’t afford anything? Why would they work Christmas when they get paid shit wages and can’t afford to buy a house? They’re aren’t in it for the company or the team. Not like people used to be.

Yeah they have a choice where to work. They’ll work there but won’t work Christmas. You’ve also got a choice whether to keep them or not.

Seniority gets the best jobs. Work Christmas for no extra pay. Those days don’t exist for Gen Z. It’s an old model.

No not once we have the extras added on, there is a reason they can get away with it but i can’t state what it is because its outing and i think it might be specific to this industry ( or very few others).

I don't believe that their attitude would miraculously improve with more pay. I think someone with a good attitude would just do their work well and jump ship asap. Much better pay would attract a different kind of talent though.

I'm cringing at the parents here saying I wouldn't want my DC to work Christmas at the same pay. It's actually quite calculated because surely they knew when they signed so it is a bizzare statement. How come they didn't find a job that pays more? Yep, exactly.

They should have decency towards their colleagues though. If you are that miserable then go find work elsewhere that pays more.

Why, because they won’t tow the company line for shite wages?

Cringe away.
