The hair salon lost my ring. Do I have any rights?

I lost my gold signet ring. The next day I retraced my steps throughout the day and emailed every place I had been to see if they had found it.
I got a haircut that day and the salon responded saying they had it! It was safe and I was welcome to come in anytime the next day.
I rock up the next day to retrieve it, with chocolates in tow. The guy crosses the room to get it but it's now not there apparently. He asks his colleagues if they have seen it and genuinely seems upset that he can't find it. He searches for about 20 mins. I gather that he is more likely to find it if I'm not staring him down so I leave the chocolates and ask him to get into contact if he finds it. He seems really worried and apologetic.

Three days later, I've heard no response. What do I do? Do I have any rights in this situation? The rings value is about £170 and I'm devastated to have lost it.
Thank you all.

The hostility is so bizarre on here sometimes. She's upset by a loss and she asked a reasonable question, no need to slate her really is there?

But she lost it.

You lost it. They thought they had it but they dont. Get over yourself

Wtf? So unnecessarily rude

But she lost it.

Yes, and was told it had been found, and is wondering about responsibility. It's totally human and not a reasonable thing to get mean and snarky about!! But I know people increasingly come on here specifically in order to display weird superiority to anyone who has a problem...

Tedious and predictable isn't it?

Surely it’s not the responsibility of a hair salon to keep you apprised of some ongoing inquiry (the latter bring a very unlikely thing in itself) when all you need do is ring them yourself. It wasn’t they who lost this ring.
They thought it might be on their premises when you first asked, and appear to have made a mistake on that score, but their immediate helpful reaction of dropping everything anyway to undertake extensive fossicking turned up nowt.

Didn’t you ascertain there and then that this had been unequivocally YOUR ring which had been seen, and not just ‘a gold ring’, from whoever answered the phone when you first rang?
Until you know that much, you are running round in circles.

They’ve been very accommodating thus far, yet now your reaction is to suss out whether you can claim for damages! What has been the offence?

I'd call them back and speak to the manager.

Some of the replies on here are really weird!!

Yes you lost it, but they admitted to having it - and then didn’t! Which means that someone has done something purposefully with the ring (could be theft, equally could be someone genuinely keeping it somewhere safe and so moved it).

Contact them again and say you’ll be back in touch as you’ll need a crime reference number. Might just spur them into action!

Definitely go back @Numberwang66 ! If someone in the staff nicked it they might want to compensate you and give you next session for free🤷‍♀️

They didn't lose it you did!
