Fed up of hearing about all.the drinking posts on here.

Let's hear if for the people who dont drink or dont drink much and dont want to be pissed up all the time or live with drunks and all the hell that brings.

Myself and Mr NC Nelly.

Drink alcohol rarely.
Like Tea, coffee, latte, cappuccino, soft drinks and orange juice.

Orange juice/lemonade
Lime and Lemon.😁

Never needed alcohol to enjoy ourselves.

I don’t tolerate alcohol very well, neither did my mum and nor does my DD. Getting drunk is not an option for us, we’re more likely to fall asleep and wake up with a migraine. For us it’s a poison, and I’m not poisoning myself just to make someone else feel less inhibited. It’s a bit of a curse actually, because being around drunk people who think they are hilarious/profound/sexy is no joke.

Berlinlover · 15/12/2025 17:55

I don’t drink alcohol at all. I look on it as though it’s poison and couldn’t imagine putting it into my body.

Cat1504 · 15/12/2025 17:59

My DD 31 doesn’t drink….she hammered it from ages 16 to 19 …then met her DP …got pregnant at 20 and never drank again …just says she doesn’t feel like it …..busy mum with a 10 and 7 year old so not wanting to get up with hangovers she says…..my DS2 age 27 never drinks alcohol….my DS1 aged 35 only drinks on holiday…..get random tested at work so says it’s not worth it….me age 60 and DP however have a drink every weekend!

LakieLady · 15/12/2025 18:00

The only teetotallers I know, approx half a dozen people, are recovering alcoholics. One friend will have been 30 years sober next year, which is an amazing achievement imo. She still craves it, and loves the smell of pubs!

MIL is practically teetotal. She'll occasionally have half a lager shandy if we all go for a pub lunch on a hot day, but is just as likely to have a fruit juice. She says she doesn't like the taste, which is fair enough, but I also find hard to understand as there is such a massive variety of flavours among alcoholic drinks.

I used to be "a most excellent drinker", to steal a phrase from my Irish friend, but when I hit peri-menopause I found it gave me terrible hangovers: like full-blown migraines with aura and vomiting, so cut back a lot.

I'm way past menopause now, but don't drink like I used to. At 70, a bit of drunken falling over is far more likely to lead to broken bones than it would have been 30 years ago!

Meadowfinch · 15/12/2025 18:00

DS and me.

DS17 refuses to touch alcohol. I assume he has seen his dad very drunk (the reason we left) and just doesn't want to go there.

I'll have a glass of fizz on Christmas morning, and maybe on my birthday. The first glass tastes lovely, the second glass doesn't. In a whole year, I might have 10 units total.

usedtobeaylis · 15/12/2025 18:03

I drink very occasionally. I started drinking when I was 14 and in all honesty I had the time of my life up until my late 20s. I loved going out dancing and drinking with my friends, I loved house parties and I loved the drinking culture around the football. It was very much part of having a good time and I did have many good times. It was cheaper to drink and it was what you looked forward to at the weekends.

I don't know what changed but I just went off it. Maybe an age thing, I don't know. I didn't want to spend my little money on alcohol, or sit in a pub for hours - I just suddenly didn't enjoy it much any more. So for the last 15 years I've been drunk, mildly, 5 times at most. I have the occasional beer. I'm fine with it. I just don't enjoy it any more so I no longer do it very often.

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 15/12/2025 18:03

Me.

No huge secret or soul finding reason, used to when I was younger but years on antidepressants and some pretty heavy duty pain meds and I had about 7 years where I wasn't allowed to touch alcohol medically and to be honest I just didn't miss it.

I might have the odd one here and there but I cam probably count on 1 hand thebnumber of drinks i have had in the last 5 years.

I tend to stick to posh soft drinks in pubs, frobishers, fentimans, Franklin & sons all do nice ones, the old alcohol free old mout cider or pop.

It has to be the only substance have to actively justify not using!

Mum2Fergus · 15/12/2025 18:05

Me. Stopped drinking around 2.5yrs ago. Was doing a 6wk long camper van trip with DS and we (Scotland) have zero tolerance, so stopped for the duration…and just never started again.

SlashBeef · 15/12/2025 18:06

My ultimate drink is a McDonalds coke 😍 must be freezing cold and fizzy enough to make me cough. Beautiful.

somanychristmaslights · 15/12/2025 18:08

I don’t. It doesn’t agree with my stomach whatsoever.

Oioiqueen · 15/12/2025 18:10

I rarely drank once I hit my 30's and if I did it was small amounts as it would give me anxiety. Now I'm on medication that gives a sedative effect in the evening so now don't drink at all. Honestly it doesn't bother me being designated driver and not having to faff getting a taxi or a lift is nice.

I quite like testing out various soft drinks. Tesco do their own brand fizzy apple that tastes just like appetiser without the price tag. I also like Guinness 0%. Not a fan of anything with ginger or elderflower in.

IfyouStealMySunshine · 15/12/2025 18:10

Both my sisters don’t drink one for religious reasons tbe other one as she has young children and is always on her knees tired.

Other than them I don’t know anyone else who is teetotal. There’s definitely more negatives than positives with alcohol but I still enjoy it.

StrikeForever · 15/12/2025 18:13

I don’t understand what the AIBU is, so can’t respond to that. I used to drink a fair bit as a teenager, but less and less as I got older. I could always take it ir leave it. By the time I was in my 30s, I never really wanted more than one drink and often, not even that. My husband is an alcoholic. Thankfully, he stopped drinking 6 years ago. Neither of us drink now.

AwfullyGood · 15/12/2025 18:16

I'm very surprised at the question.

Between family, friends and colleagues about half them don't drink.

There's alcoholism in my extended family so a lot don't drink because of it, some don't like the taste, others for health/fitness, some due to hangovers, others cost, others stopped as they have young kids, and mostly I don't know. I would rarely notice if someone is drinking or not, unlike they are making a dhow of themselves.

It's the least interesting thing about a person.

Mariets · 15/12/2025 18:20

I can't drink because I have kidney failure, but I will have a Baileys on Christmas Eve and a small glass of wine with my dinner in Christmas Day.

5128gap · 15/12/2025 18:22

I haven't had a drink in 5 years. I never drank in the house anyway, or enjoyed the taste, so when it started to give me flushes and migraine, it wasn't that big a deal to stop. People are surprised I don't drink because I love nights on the town, parties, gigs and festivals, all the things you're supposed to need a drink to enjoy. I enjoy them more sober, oddly enough, as its a more intense experience than with alcohol blurring the edges, like I'm fully present and alert and don't miss a thing.

I wish I knew someone like you. I can't drink very much these days and would prefer what I did drink to be something really good.

I think my sense of taste is failing which doesn't help.

I’ve always been properly interested in wine - not ashamed to say that for a brief period as a 1980s undergraduate I subscribed to Decanter magazine! In my 50s I began to notice even good wine was having a horrible effect on me for days afterwards - and my investigations led me to biodynamic wine, which does not have that effect. It’s a great adventure to discover more and more - but I really couldn’t afford to drink much, even if I wanted to. I’m prepared to consume organic wine if that’s the only option, but I honestly scarcely touch mainstream wine now.

I’ve ordered organic / biodynamic wine and spirits from a local supplier who doesn’t deliver, but you should be able to find decent online suppliers who do.

TheLemonLemur · 15/12/2025 20:24

I gave up for health reasons - I drank and partied a lot in my teens and 20s but don't miss it. Alcohol plays a big part in family gatherings and one friend group. I find it odd some people have such an issue with me not drinking. One friend in particular continues to buy me alcohol gifts and invites to eg gin tasting events. I never needed it to have a good time and find it odd people can't accept my choice

I hardly drink at all now but I have just realised I have developed an allergy to white wine so I have ordered some sulphite free biodynamic wines for Christmas dinner to see if I can drink these before I give up altogether. I don't think I will miss it.

brunettemic · 15/12/2025 20:53

I don’t drink much, neither does DH. I like a few drinks on a social occasion but as I don’t go out to them much it’s not a big thing. I can’t be bothered to drink at home/don’t see the point.

I have no issue with drinking though, I used to do it a lot more when I went out more when I was younger.

chattyness · 15/12/2025 21:02

Used to drink regularly, always got really pissed, but hated not feeling in control of myself & the horrendous way I felt the next day and so I stopped when I was around 35 . I used to just have a couple on special occasions but don't even do that now.
I don't miss it one bit,it was the same when I packed in smoking, it felt liberating to me.

francii · 15/12/2025 21:08

Me. I used to drink a fair bit. Would go nights out regularly and drink in the house on the weekends. I had my fourth child last year and obvs didn’t touch it the 9 months before that, and since then it’s just not occurred to me. I don’t drink in the house at all anymore, don’t keep drink here, I have only had one night away this year and I did have a few drinks but nothing major. Other than one g&t on my birthday in July and that night in August I haven’t touched a drink all year. So I’m definitely not tee total but it just doesn’t factor in my thinking to buy or consume alcohol really.

NorWouldTilly · 15/12/2025 21:10

Impressively decisive, @elastamum! I hope your research will prove rewarding.

GellerYeller · 15/12/2025 21:10

I’m in a group of friends that meet up weekly in a pub. I stopped drinking when the kids started going out and needing lifts back.
Then I found on the occasions I wasn’t ‘on call’ I didn’t miss alcohol and stuck to soft drinks.
I agree with the PP who said they enjoyed festivals and events more sober.
I love a good G and T or a cocktail, so if I want one I’ll make one. But I’m finding these occasions are rare!
I may have a Christmas sherry or Baileys. The ILs don’t drink but think opening champagne for Bucks Fizz at breakfast is good host manners so I’ll accept and nurse it for an hour or so. I’ve got poor tolerance to alcohol because I’m out of practice!!

Ukefluke · 15/12/2025 21:12

I cant take it or leave it, mostly leave it.
Husband doesnt drink.
Hate wine!
Mostly drink black russians wth copious ampints of coke.
