Vertuo or not Vertuo?!

I want to buy a coffee machine for my staff area but I don’t drink coffee 😬 I think a pod thing is probably best but Nespresso seems to have two shapes of pod and I want whichever is cheapest long term or hopefully has a sustainable/ refillable option.
The alternative is an insulated cafetière I think. Might work as we all have tea and coffee at the same times mostly (a school!).

Could some coffee drinkers help me with this please?

Vertuo are lush but the pods are still under patent to Nespresso so are more expensive and not widely available (I order on Nespresso site) I inherited a Vertuo and it's fab but I miss the cheap rip off pods I could get for my original from Aldi, Home Bargains etc

FanSpamTastic · 14/12/2025 23:11

Someone will have to clean out the cafetière - which is a PITA.

vertuo costs about 50p to 80p per drink - is that in your budget? Who will be buying the pods?

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 14/12/2025 23:12

What about an aeropress?

mynamechangemyrules · 14/12/2025 23:14

Yes the cost of Vertuo seems hefty. We don’t mind some cleaning out as we work in a unit where we and the students all wash up/ load dishwasher as a team. Don’t know aeropress so will google!

I second this. I love my Vertuo but it’s an expensive habit!

Talipesmum · 14/12/2025 23:46

Definitely not vertuo. They’re far more expensive and have to come only from nespresso. The other size pods are made by everyone and you can get big boxes of them. It’s still quite an expensive way to have coffee in a staff room, though it’s nice and quick. How many of you are there? 2 pods a day each for eg 5 of you - 50 pods a week. You can probably get them cheaper but we get about 40 for £10.

A cafetière takes 5 mins to brew in my experience - would that work? I think it’s be much cheaper for large numbers of coffee drinkers. They’re pretty easy to rinse out.

mynamechangemyrules · 18/12/2025 22:23

Thanks for the tips- there’s only 3 out of 10 coffee drinkers but they like fancy coffee not the instant on offer, so thought a secondhand addition might be a new year treat. 40 for £10 sounds ok to me. Will get on Facebook! Thanks all

I would get a filter machine, lovely coffe and machines aren’t expensive.

BamberGirl · 18/12/2025 22:53

This type of thing…

pkus more sustainable than pods as well as cheaper.

Allswellthatendswelll · 18/12/2025 22:55

I bought a vertuo for £4 in a charity shop! But I have to pay about 80p to £1 per pod. I do like the convenience though.

I will never be parted from my Vertuo. Yes it’s expensive but I don’t drink, don’t go pubbing or clubbing and don’t smoke.
The coffee is just better and stronger than the tiny little original pods. Bloody nuisance that you can only buy from Nespresso but there it is.

@NemoSaltatSobrius that’s exactly how I justify it to myself - it’s my one indulgence!

Completely fair enough if it’s just you using it, or a small number of people - but still not the wisest idea for a large staff room!

PineappleCoconut · 19/12/2025 10:31

nespresso smaller sized capsules are so much cheaper.
Look for the Philip’s L’Or machines too, they use the same regular Nespresso or generic pods as well as their own double sized ones. Very easy to use and clean.

user593 · 19/12/2025 11:47

I’ve not tried Vertuo but we use two of the original pods in our coffee so I expect Vertuo might work out cheaper if you like strong coffee!
