What sweet breakfast would you prefer to eat on Christmas?

My teen daughter is wanting to bake breakfast this year for our very large family. We are having McDonalds style English muffins. But DD is insisting on a sweet treat for those that would prefer. She want to make something from scratch. She has asked what adults would prefer 😂. I have no sweet tooth so am no help.

  • Cinnamon rolls
  • Walnut/chocolate plaits
  • Pastries (would be a turnover-esque thing with fresh cream - assortment of flavours)
  • Babka with various jams
  • Baked German pancakes
  • Custard buns

I’ve told her it’s not really needed as the English muffins are plenty filling but she’s insisting. And I’m more than happy for her to enjoy baking/cooking. We have a large group so I’m sure they’ll get eaten.

Cinnamon rolls 100% - extra benefit is they are considered festive too

cinnamonscented · 14/12/2025 19:44

Ooh Cinnamon rolls for me please! I have a DD just like yours and she loves to bake.

PermanentTemporary · 14/12/2025 19:44

Gosh they all sound lovely. At first sight the baked German pancakes (don’t know what they are) or the cinnamon rolls. Tbh I would downgrade the muffins and make her baking the star.

TheTowerAtMidnight · 14/12/2025 19:45

I have a sweet tooth, but the only thing from that list I would actually like are cinnamon rolls.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 14/12/2025 19:47

Cinnamon rolls please! Delicious and a festive flavour. They all sound good though.

lexreps · 14/12/2025 19:47

Fresh cinnamon rolls but the babka sounds good too!

vanillalattes · 14/12/2025 19:48

Cinnamon rolls. None of the others appeal to me - sorry!

raspberrieswithchocolate · 14/12/2025 19:48

Cinnamon rolls are delicious, also like chocolate croissants

henlake7 · 14/12/2025 19:48

I'm doing cinnamon rolls this year....mine are coming out of a cardboard tube though!

Cronte · 14/12/2025 19:48

Interesting. I didn’t think cinnamon rolls would be popular. I can take or leave cinnamon though.

She wanted to do waffles but our maker does not crank out that many at once. I would like for her to be able to enjoy breakfast and not be stressing away in the kitchen.

I'm not fussed by them, but we too have a tradition of cinnamon rolls on Xmas morning.

Make them the day before, do the second prove in the fridge overnight, and cook in the morning.

You could add cardamon that's what I prefer.

SarahAndQuack · 14/12/2025 19:54

Ooh, send her round my way! I would also go for @lexreps cardamom rolls, but pastries with fresh cream for me. What a lovely daughter you have.

Oh I love cardamom. Will make this suggestion. Thank you!

I'd go for cinnamon rolls or sticky Chelsea buns (aware they aren't on your list!).

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 14/12/2025 19:57

Do people know you are making breakfast? Tbh I think a lot of people either skip breakfast esp if eating a lot later or have specific things they eat for that meal, more than others.

I would suggest having a few other things in people can make up for themselves, like oats for porridge.

Cronte · 14/12/2025 19:57

I suggested crumpets (I’ve seen people do them in festive shapes). Not sure if they are easy or difficult to make. Something very charming about crumpets imo! DD wasn’t convinced

Cinnamon! Or cardamom!

Daisywhatsyouranswer · 14/12/2025 19:59

Cinnamon here too, it screams Xmas and I always get them in, also the walnut and chocolate ones sound lovely.

id also downgrade the muffins and let her at it.

We always do breakfast. We will be eating breakfast at 9 ish. My mum will have just coffee but the rest of us eat.

Christmas meal is around 2pm.

Dessert and leftovers for dinner

Cinnamon rolls for me too - not too sickly which I think anything with cream or custard might be for breakfast, especially on a day of excess, and it's a festive flavour too.

Amy Shepherd has a VERY easy recipe for the walnut slices :). Can’t go wrong with any of her food. Proper comfort

Anyone in your family like blueberry muffins? I know they're not on your list but I think they're lovely and sweet for breakfast. Bake them the day before and warm very slightly before serving so they have that fresh baked taste and softness.

Ineffable23 · 14/12/2025 20:15

I am a reasonably keen and fairly experienced baker, and my conclusion with crumpets was that Warburtons do a great job and I was not going to be beating them at that particular game 😂. What I made was perfectly nice but no nicer than Warburton's (which is one of the few places I am totally brand loyal). So from me, crumpets would be a no unless she's made them plenty of times before and is confident in them already.
