What sweet breakfast would you prefer to eat on Christmas?

My teen daughter is wanting to bake breakfast this year for our very large family. We are having McDonalds style English muffins. But DD is insisting on a sweet treat for those that would prefer. She want to make something from scratch. She has asked what adults would prefer 😂. I have no sweet tooth so am no help.

  • Cinnamon rolls
  • Walnut/chocolate plaits
  • Pastries (would be a turnover-esque thing with fresh cream - assortment of flavours)
  • Babka with various jams
  • Baked German pancakes
  • Custard buns

I’ve told her it’s not really needed as the English muffins are plenty filling but she’s insisting. And I’m more than happy for her to enjoy baking/cooking. We have a large group so I’m sure they’ll get eaten.

I'm not fussed by them, but we too have a tradition of cinnamon rolls on Xmas morning.

Make them the day before, do the second prove in the fridge overnight, and cook in the morning.

Can you share a recipe please?
I've only made them once and all the filling completely leaked out!

I make a Nutella Christmas tree for Christmas breakfast.

TooHotWaterBottle · 14/12/2025 20:21

Definitely the cinnamon rolls

Hayley1256 · 14/12/2025 20:22

Blueberry muffins or banana bread

CombatBarbie · 14/12/2025 20:22

Churros? With or without cinnamon sugar

Gemmaright · 14/12/2025 20:23

Perhaps start cranking out muffins early and keep them warm, and then have a station of toppings, I saw a lovely recipe the other day for cranberry jam with edible glitter, would love that!
Icing sugar sprinkler, chocolate flakes, honey, maple syrup, sugared nuts. Oh and whipped cream. Yum

Cronte · 14/12/2025 20:26

are cinnamon rolls a new thing? I hadnt heard of them until a few years ago.

Another vote for cinnamon rolls! Love them but would never be bothered to make them from scratch so very rarely get to eat them, I’d be thrilled to have one on Christmas morning!

Wow that sounds absolutely amazing. You’d have my vote if it were up to me

I made crepe Suzette's one year - they were a success of you want to try doing something really different. I still have the 50cl bottle of Cointreau Triple Sec I bought back then - it's an Orange Liqueur - there are others - any one will do.

DancingNotDrowning · 14/12/2025 20:39

I make nigellas raspberry and cranberry Christmas muffins.

perfect for Christmas morning but I’m not a fan of cinnamon

CloudSky · 14/12/2025 20:41

Maybe chocolate plaits. My Xmas day go to is a hot pain au chocolat.

We came across them about 10 years ago - but we weren't in the uk at that point.

Ineffable23 · 14/12/2025 20:59

I think Chelsea buns have been around forever. Cinnamon buns i.e. with a white icing and without raisins are newer. My preference is without the icing but with a sticky caramelised filling.

Whaleandsnail6 · 14/12/2025 21:05

Walnut/Chocolate plaits and custard buns. Those both sound amazing

MagicStarrz · 14/12/2025 21:07

I don't like cinnamon.

I like a sweet breakfast but would go for a pain au chocolat, danish pastry, blueberry muffin or pancakes.

Walnut and chocolate plaits sound delicious. Not crumpets - it's like eating a sea sponge.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 14/12/2025 21:10

I’d go cinnamon rolls too, also have the advantage that they are best if left to prove overnight so the work (and mess!) is mainly the day before.

SewingIsMySuperPower · 14/12/2025 21:12

I will take one of each, some cardamom buns and your address so I can come and eat them too please 😘

Tbh my favourite sweet breakfast on Xmas day is panettone with butter and jam. But I have no idea how you go about making one of those, so I let the supermarket do it for me.

Lovely thought from your daughter BTW x

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/12/2025 21:19

Pancakes, strawberries, yoghurt and lemon curd swirled through. Dust with some icing sugar snow and/or a couple of mint leaves for extra decoration.

Looks pretty, is sweet but fresh tasting and goes well with orange juice/st clements (topping up the OJ with lemonade)/mimosas (topping up the OJ with prosecco).

pandora206 · 14/12/2025 21:24

We've been to Zurich Christmas market this evening, and my daughter and I had cinnamon rolls. They were spicy and warm, and my daughter had vanilla cream with hers. They were extremely popular (and in our case, preceded by goulash soup and followed by gluwein). They are just perfect for Christmas.

gogomomo2 · 14/12/2025 21:26

I’d suggest cranberry and orange bagels, can be made the day before and stored in an airtight container or dough made on Christmas Eve and finished in the morning - I use a great British bake off recipe but skip the sugar topping .

blankcanvas3 · 14/12/2025 21:27

Cinnamon rolls!

I’d much prefer home made fresh cinnamon rolls. Yum.
