To think that the only acceptable form of sausages is Cumberland, Plain Pork, or Lincolnshire?

Just had a caramelised onion sausage. I was super excited as I bought them from Ocado, the brand The Jolly Hog. The sausages are super meaty and look good and are a good size

But omg ewwwwww

A sweet tasting sausage is the worst thing on earth. I'm sat here disappointed whilst dd(6) has the time of her life munching on them (she apparently isnt bothered 😭)

This also happened when I tried maple sausages. What an afternoon that was!

Anyway - anyone who is buying caramelised onion sausages or any other variant, is despicable!

The sooner these travesties to the good sausage name are taken off the market, the better!

Square sausage is also a British sausage.

Do they have stuff in them to make them taste different?? Like maple 🤢🤢

I've never had a square sausage but would happily try it as long as it meets my criteria for appropriate sausage meat 🤭🤭

Lidl do these Italian herby chicken sausages which are tasty chopped up in a pasta dish. Or in a sarnie, come to that 🤔

Snowonground · 13/12/2025 17:48

I'm with you OP. Can't stand fancy sausages. Ones with apple in are the worst. If you get good sausages the best thing is the plain , comforting taste of them.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 13/12/2025 17:49

sausages with apple in are my favourite

Yes! The good quality meat taste is what makes the taste. It doesn't need to taste of anything else!!

YABU because the sausages you approve of are far from being the only ones that aren't sweet. I agree with you about the sweet ones though.

That and a nice firm skin with a tiny pop as you bite it. Nothing more required.

Now feeling quite sausagey and am thinking about bangers and mash for supper

XenoBitch · 13/12/2025 17:53

I love the Lidl Deluxe Toulouse sausages. I like to make them into sausage rolls.

Stanislas · 13/12/2025 17:56

Woodall s have the best Cumberland sausage. Fenwicks used to sell them.

Yes, your thread was giving ‘none of that foreign muck’ little Britain vibes to begin with op.

😭😭 I agree, wish I could edit it

I love other cultures, I promise!!

And I recognise that square sausage, from Scotland, is also british!

I also love Irish pork (from both ROI and Northern Ireland)

I concur OP. I love sweet and savoury together. But NOT in a sausage!

And they have to be pork. Not overly fussed about quality compared to taste, but we do have decent sausages in NI anyway. My mum used to mess around with Irish stew (or ‘THE stew’ as it was known in every household😆) by occasionally putting beef sausages in it. Apparently my dad’s particular request. Boiled beef sausages are an abomination. They could be lovely fried or grilled but I will never ever know, as I’m still traumatised.

I had it in my basket, but switched it out for the abominations that dd is very noisily eating 😄

Ooh try them when they are next on spesh, quite good

Omg youve reminded me of the sausage casseroles of my youth 😄😄😄

Boiled sausages with tomatoes and a Coleman packet mix 😄😄

Agree, a good pork sausage is everything. These ones did really 'puff up' if that makes sense, so are good quality. Just eurgh sweetness

Yeah agree! These ones did have all that though, i must say.

Omg do it - I am super disappointed and have no idea what to do for dinner now 🤔

Square sausage is the best imo, steak lorne or onion lorne.
beef links if no square is available but never pork links🤢

murasaki · 14/12/2025 01:29

Supermarket sausages are nearly always sad, and that includes you, waitrose. Our butcher does a fab wild boar and apple, which even DP, who is firmly in the no fruit on my main meal camp, likes. Their sausages are fab in general.

SirCameronBridie · 14/12/2025 01:36

Another vote for Square Sausage. Also Butcher's Choice pork link is acceptable. Most fruity sausages never live up to the their promise.

Breadcat24 · 14/12/2025 01:44

Italian sausages with fennel. Mmmmmm

hulahooper2 · 14/12/2025 01:44

square sausage is the best

izzyme · 14/12/2025 15:49

You can't beat a good old fashioned pork banger. Juicy meat and crispy skin mmmm. I wish I could find the little fat pork sausages that we had at school but I think they've been consigned to history. I also like kielbasa and pork and apple.

They are DELICIOUS MINCED SNOUT AND ARSEHOLES

Heathen

This.

And surely if you’re happy to eat meat it’s best that the whole animal is used where possible rather than wasting any potentially edible bits?

mumofoneAloneandwell · 14/12/2025 15:54

EBearhug · 13/12/2025 17:33

I had a good bratwurst earlier, and I like a Glamorgan sausage once in a while, whuch is meat-free. I'm also quite keen on sausage in the form of peperoni, salami, etc. And black sausage and square sausage for breakfast. Haggis is a type of sausage which is also good.

I agree that caramelised onion is too sweet, but I've had a pork & leek sausage with was good.

So I agree that sweet sausages are wrong, but I think your list of acceptable sausages is far too short.
