Boating with strangers

AIBU to go on a boat right now (11pm) with two men I do not know and have just met in the pub?

A lady I know did this. She did not appreciate my concerned reaction. Middle aged adult. Not drunk. No idea if the men were or weren’t.

Yes YABU - don’t do it. Watch Costguard SOS on Channel 5 catch-up instead.

But on a boat hire involving other people, right? Not this woman and two strangers pootling about by themselves in a small boat?

Daytimenighttime · 13/12/2025 11:25

You would be foolish to go anywhere at 11.pm.with 2 strange men you have just met in a pub.

Greggsit · 13/12/2025 11:58

What sort of boat? There's a big difference between hiring a punt on the Cam, rowing a dinghy to France as a reverse migrant and getting the ferry to Spain! With or without two men.

GardenMole · 13/12/2025 13:58

Boat owned by one of the men. I have no further information about the size of it. I told her it was dangerous to put herself in that situation no matter how “nice” the men seemed. She’d have been better telling someone BEFORE going on the boat, in case nobody ever saw her again!

Just to clarify..she did not ask me if she should do it. She told me she had, the day after. Aside from it being her own life and not my business etc..I just can’t fathom the risks people take sometimes.

Totally agree with you op. She sounds wildly stupid and naive.

Just the three of them on a boat.

So this has already happened last night? And you disapprove?

I don't think you know enough about it to know if it was risky or not. She was there, you weren't. Some people are just more spontaneous. It doesn't mean they're not making reasonable decisions.

cakebreak · 13/12/2025 14:32

I disagree. I like being spontaneous and I am not risk averse but this fits into the deeply stupid category not the fun and spontaneous category

Pretty much. And yes. Not my life though. Just wondering if others would do same if they met someone in the pub who offered to take you out on their boat pretty much then and there. I’d say no thanks, but maybe another day and with a friend or two tagging along.

For the past month I’ve been binge watching Crimewatch UK from the VERY first episode in June 1984 when the ‘number to call’ was

01 811 8055!!!

I think you can guess my answer to this question ……

GardenMole · 13/12/2025 14:46

Interesting to hear other perspectives. Some people are more risk averse than others.

I recognised someone whose face was shown on Crimewatch once. I phoned the number!

Blimey I’ve never done that’s! Did you feel it had been worthwhile?
