To buy this gift for 3.5 year old?

I went shopping today, I bought a Christmas present for a 3.5 year old and just thought it was cute as I don’t know her too well or what she has. Now I’ve got home I’m thinking is it acceptable to buy a 3.5 year old pretend make up? I personally wouldn’t be bothered if someone bought for my DD but I don’t know what others may think.

Seen as you asked…! I would definitely not buy or recommend giving this to a 3 year old. There are hundreds of other presents that would be more suitable, fun, less plastic tat etc. You know the parents and maybe they’ve love it for their child but most would not. Tbh I’ve not even bought my 6 year old any pretend make up let along my 3 year old.

My mum has got something similar for my 3.5 year old and it doesn't bother me. We paint her toe nails for her (don't use it on fingers as don't want it in her mouth) and she will have a little play with the make up. I trust my daughter to play with it when I am nearby and not to use it to paint the walls or rug! Its just a bit of fun!

It's listed as ages 5+ on tkmaxx website so based on that alone I probably wouldn't buy it for a 3.5yo

A bit older and I think this sort of thing is fine though, with a nod from the parents.

I do think people are a bit hysterical about "indoctrination" with play makeup. I definitely had some like this from Claire's when I was a kid and haven't worn a lick of makeup since I was about 23, so I don't think it will automatically create a pledge with the devil to wear a full face of makeup 24/7. But it's one of those things. Get the parents 'ok' first.

No way would I give that to any child, no matter what age. It’s so grim the way we treat kids as mini adults as opposed to kids.

Ambridgefan · 12/12/2025 20:45

I wouldn't buy that for a three year old.
But I wouldn't buy it for my seven year old GD either.

Growlybear83 · 12/12/2025 20:45

I would have been absolutely horrified if anyone had bought something like that for my daughter at that age and it would have gone straight into the charity bag. I think it’s dreadful to give makeup to a tiny child.

It’s a nice gift if that’s what the 3 year old likes, but it’s pretty random to be a general gift for a toddler you don’t know very well.. I would have gone with something else personally

bridgetreilly · 12/12/2025 20:48

At 3, they still sometimes randomly stick things in their mouths, so no, it’s really not a great gift. Sorry.

Bit young at 3, but perhaps ok to play with on Barbie dolls or one of those make up heads? One of those sticker dolly dressing books would have been great or something similar.

100% agree with this. There are so many other interesting toys out there.
