Been scammed by a cake maker?

Have used this lady multiple times no problem, really great cake maker, reliable etc. Our youngest kids are friends from school, sometime socialise outside of school

Ordered a cake for December 10th, sent money via bank transfer, messaged the day before to arrange a collection time, no reply. Messaged again the morning of, received a reply at 1pm saying she got her dates mixed up she thought it was for the 12th and offered a refund straight away. I was annoyed but messaged saying these things happen.
Asked if she needed bank details, no reply, messaged her again today twice, no reply.
Shes since removed me as a friend on Facebook (not blocked)
Have I lost this money? Im tempted to write it off as bad experience but didn’t want to leave it on a sour note as our kids are friends.

AIBU: let it go
AINBU: message her again tomorrow, leave a bad review on her Facebook page

If she's still advertising as a cake maker, I would consider pursuing the money gently. And asking around subtly if anyone has had similar issues..

If not, I'd stick a note/letter in the door, sorry you are having problems if it's anything I can help with let me know. I won't be pursuing the money but if you felt able to refund me in the future I'd be grateful.

I supported a local balloon business, who did a great product, but they were really weird with ordering it months in advance, then no contact and suddenly you had to be at 5pm for delivery. Did my head in and I stopped supporting them.
Small business can be erratic I guess.

I would send over a message saying

’Hi Carol, sorry me again… not sure if you’re getting my texts so am messaging via face book, here are my bank details for the refund of £X.xx….
Hope everything is ok with you as it’s not like you to get dates mixed up and unfriending me is unusual too.
see what happens

I’d leave it there tbh.
She found time during her ‘busy schedule’ to go on Facebook and deletes load of friends… but couldn’t send a quick response asking for your bank details… weird!!!

What if it was a wedding cake or a cake for a massive party? No, no, no absolutely not .The mistake was bad enough, but then the blocking and the radio silence - you're the cake maker aren't you?

Of course not.

I get the point about her forgetting and there wasn't time to make one for the day? But I still think the op was a bit quick with her response.

Gossipisgood · 15/12/2025 13:46

Do you have a phone number for her to give her a ring & ask her about it all? If not & you know where she lives go to her home & start by asking if everything is ok as you've not heard from her & it's not like her to not be in touch. You've had cakes from her before without any problems so maybe she has something going on & has removed you from her Socials as she can't deal with things at the moment.

Flowerslamp · 15/12/2025 14:46

I think she was probably genuine all along.

It would be odd to try and hide from someone who knows where you live and knows your DC simply by removing them on FB.

Obviously she didnt handle things well, but if she has work as well as a cake sideline, I can see why the cake business might not be top priority for a couple of days in the run up to Christmas.

Why didn't you send bank details with the first message? All she really did was forget to reply to one message.

🤣🤣
See , it does work out in the end.
