Are you going to miss out on heaven if you steal a stolen item ? Not your’s originally, possibly ancestral

Not if you steal it with the intention of returning it to the original owner... But otherwise yeah that's still bad.

ThisLittlePony · 11/12/2025 18:18

Do you mean the Elgin marbles or your grandmas tea set?

parietal · 11/12/2025 18:20

Heaven doesn’t exist. And YABU to ask a question without enough info for people to answer

ExpressCheckout · 11/12/2025 18:24

It depends whether you mean ‘stolen’ as in a long-ago legal sale now disputed by someone who believes it should never have been sold in the first place, or ‘stolen’ as in unlawfully taken without consent.

The theft from Bristol museum of colonial thefts by the British on the news

Still theft, whatever the motive.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 11/12/2025 18:28

I know loads of people that knowingly receive or buy stolen items and they truly believe that they are still law abiding citizens 😱. They are the probably the same people who have driven to work on a Monday, still over the limit from a weekend of drinking.
Prisons would be overflowing if all of our crimes came to light.

Needless to say, I'm on the fence with this one plus I used to smoke weed until recently.

If someone listed which of the 600 items were actually stolen and also list those that were lawfully sold to British and other nationalities by their indigenous owners at the time then it would be easier to judge what's 'right' or 'wrong'.

Lmnop22 · 11/12/2025 20:05

Did you never hear that two wrongs don’t make a right?!

SeaAndStars · 11/12/2025 20:14

I don't imagine the people who stole these items from Bristol museum did so with the intention of returning the items to their original owners.

Theft is theft.

A virtue signaling, self righteous thief that is.

TheNightingalesStarling · 11/12/2025 20:47

I'm a strong believer in countries/religions being able to reclaim artefacts taken by colonial forces by legal means.

I doubt this is that.

intrepidpanda · 11/12/2025 22:09

No that's worse. You are stealing education on history. Without history we have nothing to evolve on.

No no, you’re stealing another countries education on history.

Are they donating it to another country's museum?
