Work comments about pregnancies

I work in a small school, that is part of a large group of schools.

We have had two teachers and one support staff go on maternity staggered last year and this year.

I am actively trying for a baby, today the headteacher made a comment how "well we are now in a huge deficit because of maternity pay and people getting pregnant"

I am so worried should I fall pregnant she is going to give me a hard time, I've been tyring for a while now and I'm in my late 30s so wanted to try one last time (for this year)

Ignore them

There is literally nothing you can, or should, do about this, other than, perhaps, point out that if no one had children, there would be no need for schools, and would she like to return to the days where women had no employment rights?

Best wishes for conceiving.

If Reform gets elected at the next GE we will have exactly that - and very fast. Though they will probably remove ALL employment rights, not just those for women.

They should buy into insurance that would offset some, if not most of the mat pay. Do not let it bother you - school budgets are awful but this is not your problem!

They didn't buy insurance apparently

I think this is the very acme of ‘not my problem’.

Gloriousgardener11 · 11/12/2025 18:18

Do what you want.
If it’s an academy then they can F off!
Their poor decisions regarding insurance are not your problem.
Good luck to you my love and don’t give them a second thought because they certainly wouldn’t do you any favours back!

TinselTitts · 11/12/2025 18:19

YABU, it is what it is.

And what it certainly isn't is your problem 🤷‍♂️

Ohthatsabitshit · 11/12/2025 18:20

Don’t give it a second thought.
