Anyone else’s toddler got a cough that’s awful?

My two year old has picked up a cough and has had it for over three weeks. She’s having coughing fits in the night and is throwing up too.

is this just viral or does she need antibiotics?

NHS says GP if you've had a cough for 3 weeks. They'll be able to listen to chest and advise if it needs antibiotics.

Coughing at night can be a sign of asthma too. Definitely get it checked.

Thank you, can it just be a viral cough I feel like GPs always dismiss everything as viral but I’ll still contact them tomorrow morning to ensure she’s checked over

After this amount of time I’d be getting it looked at. Kids pick up loads of bugs at this time of year but usually if it was going to resolve itself it would have happened by now. She probably needs antibiotics or some additional help to fight it off.

Yeah I think it can but viral infections weaken defences which is how a bacterial infection gets in. Viral ones usually improve within 3 weeks. The GP will listen to the cough and what the lungs sound like and be able to tell you what's going on.

I would see the doctor about it, 3 weeks, the illness should start to leave at this point. I believe that you should talk to your GP about it.

It might be viral, there's a lot of flu and covid around atm, but secondary bacterial infections are common after viruses like that because they can suppress the immune system, so it is worth a trip to the GP.

Thank you I’ll contact the gp when they open today

I'd get it checked. My daughter was the same and just flopped on me for days, while constantly coughing. It turned out she had a double ear infection too. Antibiotics.

user2466 · 11/12/2025 07:22

@Georgiepud thank you. What other symptoms did little one have?

OP posts:

Fever for 2 days and unusually for her not eating.

user2466 · 11/12/2025 13:45

Thanks everyone. Got her seen to. The doctor said he could hear crackling when she breathes so prescribed antibiotics, glad I got her seen to
