I can’t believe I’m asking this!

I asked my partner for some more ideas for stocking fillers for our 8 & 9 year olds. He mentioned new toothbrushes. I said oh actually I was thinking of getting them electric ones so we just change the heads. He said no and that he has stabbed hhimselfin the face by his eye when the head has came off the toothbrush of his electric one. I was bewildered and said how on earth does that even happen?! He’s the processed to say I’m argumentative and if I buy the kids one and they stab themselves in the eye when the head comes off it’s all my fault. In my 36 years of life and using one. That has never happened. Am I right in thinking WTF?!

Also oral b sell them and recommended them from age 3 on the website.

Also if you can stab yourself in the eye whilst brushing your teeth. Your doing something wrong!!

I’ve been using electric toothbrushes for about 30 years and never blinded myself! I suppose if you didn’t put the head on properly, so it was loose, then switched it on (by your eye 🙄) it could fly off? Although I think the benefits of electric toothbrushes outweigh the risks of flying heads!

AliceAbsolum · 10/12/2025 21:41

Wtf, never stabbed myself in the eye with any toothbrush

OneLilacHare · 10/12/2025 21:41

My Dd had one from about a year. No eye stabbing thus far. She is now almost 3. Both Dh and I also use them without stabbing ourselves anywhere. Was your Dh potentially drunk when the incident occurred?

To be fair, I have quite poor hand-eye coordination and I have poked myself in the eye with a toothbrush many times 🥲 but I don't think this is a common problem, so yeah, I think your husband is overreacting and you should just buy them electric toothbrushes

Luxio · 10/12/2025 21:43

Well my son has had one since he was 4 and has not yet proceeded to stab himself in the eye... I doubt there's actually ever been anyone who stabbed themselves in the eye because the head of their electric toothbrush has come off...he sound like a utter idiot looking for any argument to be honest.

DiscoBeat · 10/12/2025 21:44

What a plonker. I'm sure most 3 years know to put the toothbrush in their mouth, not their eye.

LLJETO · 10/12/2025 21:45

Well, I’m with your husband, I’ve stabbed myself

Nah, not really, he’s bonkers!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 10/12/2025 21:46

Does he mean he had hold of it pulling the head off, it was stuck but then came off suddenly and he effectively punched himself in the face holding the head? In which case he's a bit of a twit.

Or was he an innocent victim of a toothbrush with aspirations to be a nerf gun when it grows up?!

I wish the laugh react was still a thing on MN because your last line really tickled me 😂

jimmyeatworld · 10/12/2025 21:48

He has some electric toothbrush trauma 😆

Runrunrudolph · 10/12/2025 21:49

I've never stabbed myself in the eye with my electric toothbrush and I 've been using one for donkeys years.

He is doing your dc a disservice if he is intending discouraging them from using electric toothbrushes because they are much better for dental health and hygiene than manual ones.

Odellio · 10/12/2025 21:49

My toddler did actually stab me in eye with his toothbrush about 6 months ago. So it can happen! Reading this I’m glad it wasn’t an electric one.

But definitely not a reason to not buy your kids electric toothbrushes, what are the chances.

PruthePrune · 10/12/2025 21:51

I've blasted myself in the eyeball with my water flosser but have never had a toothbrush related injury.

Horrorscope · 10/12/2025 21:51

Never stabbed my eye either. Maybe he hadn’t pushed the head on properly.

Anyway, I say get them one because I think they clean your teeth much better than manual ones.

ImNotAsThinkAsYouDrunkIAm · 10/12/2025 21:56

Totally outing myself here but we got my ds an electric toothbrush the Christmas he was 6. It was a Star Wars one and I have never seen a child more excited by a Christmas present before. Nothing will ever live up to that toothbrush. So, get the toothbrush. And no, he’s never stabbed himself in the eye with it.

QwertyAtThirty · 10/12/2025 21:58

Is he generally very anxious? My DH suffers from horrible anxiety when it comes to the DC and is forever responding to my suggestions with "but what if [insert catastrophic but microscopically probable outcome] happens??" He once berated me for hanging a large picture on the wall at the bottom of our staircase, in case one of the DC fell down the stairs at the exact moment that the picture came loose from its hook, fell on the DC's head, and caused a terrible brain injury 😵‍💫
But if your DH doesn't have anxiety and just has a random fear of electric toothbrushes then I'd gently suggest that his experience was a one-off that's unlikely to happen again, and get the toothbrushes!
As an aside, my dentist says that if you're brushing properly, there's no real advantage to having an electric vs a manual toothbrush.

VoltaireMittyDream · 10/12/2025 21:59

My DS is dyspraxic and the clumsiest kid alive and has never stabbed himself in the eye with his electric toothbrush.

I, on the other hand, nearly put my eye out last year with a water flosser.

flowerbiithc · 10/12/2025 21:59

Thankyou all! I knew I wasn’t barmy!

Also, here’s an electric toothbrush that wouldn’t do much damage even if you did try to stab your eye out with it:

maybe your DH could get on board with those? They’re fucking expensive, mind
