ThatVividReader · 10/12/2025 13:26

You can watch it all on YouTube.

But be warned, it's mostly shit.

I'm watching Terry and June at the moment. It is still very funny

Staringintothevoid616 · 10/12/2025 13:29

You need Morecombe and Wise (the one with Angela Rippon), all creatures great and small Christmas special and last of the Summer Wine Christmas special. Instead we’ll get some wacky disaster like the plague wiping out half of Emmerdale or something

YABU for placing The Krankies above Morecambe and Wise?!
Have you no shame? 🤯
There is no hope for this world 😂

There’s some absolute classics there; I assume you left M&W off by accident.
I’ll go & wash up when the Krankies are on.

Haha ok noted !! 🤣

I'm very nostalgic for 80s Christmas and so look at a lot of it online and honestly, it is mostly truly awful.

Even if you remove the casual racism, sexism and all the other -isms which are shocking now, it is mostly very unfunny.

I think there was so little available on TV back then there was a captive audience who had no other options so what was available wasn't to the standard we would expect now.

But all of the TV programmes you mentioned are on YouTube.

Oh yes All Creatures Great and Small !!

I love the Angela Rippon M & W!

Yes granted !!

I didn’t forget about M&W I was about to put it on then decided I like other programmes more!

I think a lot of people would agree with you about Krankies !

Missing off M&W says to me that you have come up with the worst possible examples you could possibly think of (although I might watch Crackerjack and feel Old)

HeadyLamarr · 10/12/2025 13:37

I might watch the Two Ronnies but I'm swerving everything else.

We have a list of 27 Christmas films DS is blasting through at two a night, so I will be totally over all Christmassy things by the time the day itself arrives.

Yes that’s the thing - I LOVED Terry & June in the 80s but watched it on YouTube around 2010 and tbh I struggled a bit to get through the episodes !

I am surprised to read this. It is currently on Freeview (I guess any not suitable won't be shown) and it is surprisingly still relatable, unlike most old programs, feels more in the vein of the good life, which I also love

Lurkingandlearning · 10/12/2025 13:42

GasPanic · 10/12/2025 13:48

I presume you'll be watching that on a 12" telly from about 50ft away while drinking babysham.

Programs could be crap in the 80s because no one could see or hear what the hell they were saying. Just two blobs moving on the screen and some garbled grunting.

It would maybe be fun though if say one of the alternate channels did a complete 1985 Christmas Schedule.

You'd be hard pressed to avoid Jimmy Saville though.

I'm the same.

I loved Bobby Ball as an 80s child and even wrote to Jim'll fix it trying to meet him!

I maintained the affection all through my life and now watching back, I do think he was funny in comparison to all the others like Little and Large who were not!

But a lot of the humour like 'you got me skin then Tommy' wore thin after he'd said it more than 3 times and an inordinate amount of 'humour' was him verbally attacking an imagined woman in the audience "stop looking at me lady I'll have you" and pretending to throw punches or headbutts which just doesn't seem very funny now and it's weird that it ever was to be honest.

And watching the generation game, bullseye, 321 etc - a huge amount of the 'humour' at that time was taking the piss out of the appearance of the contestants - their weight, wearing glasses or making fun of their marriage for example.

When you watch it back now with adult eyes it doesn't age well.

BauhausOfEliott · 10/12/2025 13:53

There were plenty of good TV shows on in the 1980s... just not the ones you've listed here.

Apart from the Two Ronnies, which I'd probably still laugh at, and the Generation Game because I would still find Larry Grayson funny and would enjoy the retro stuff on the conveyor belt, this schedule would probably make me want to cut my own throat by tea-time.
