To upgrade my phone?

reallysillydilemma · 10/12/2025 13:14

ive had my current phone for two and a half years. The battery is gone and it’s slowing down, the apps don’t work correctly etc.

I have looked into upgrading and it’s only £15 a month more than my current contact which I can easily afford. My partner thinks I should stay with the current phone that I have because it’s “not sustainable” to get a new one and this one “still works”. But I just think it would be more beneficial to get the new one

how old are you? Do you always listen to what your parents say? 🤷🏻‍♀️

MiddleAgedDread · 10/12/2025 13:15

if you're paying yourself then tell your parents it's none of their business how you spend your money. If they're paying for it then you'll to wait until you've got enough pocket money to upgrade yourself.

Ffs I meant partner, not parent! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Edited now - that’s another thing. The autocorrect has gone dodgy as hell!

Same question still applies 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well it doesn’t, because my parents couldn’t care less whether I upgrade or not

Get a new one.

It doesn’t “still work” if the battery is failing and apps have stopped working.

frozendaisy · 10/12/2025 13:24

you are allowed to make this decision as an independent adult woman

No, the point I was making what’s it got to do with your partner 🤷🏻‍♀️

He says that because we’re looking to move in it would be irresponsible

Your partner is controlling. A properly working smart phone is (unfortunately) a necessity with what we are expected to do digitally these days.

Threads like this are why I'm glad I'm single.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 10/12/2025 13:51

Your partner doesn’t sound all that great! Imagine resenting your partner having a working phone.

WallaceinAnderland · 10/12/2025 14:23

It's your phone and your money so none of his business really.

What are your financial plans for moving in together and how does your phone upgrade affect that?

ChasbutnotDave · 10/12/2025 14:42

I'd get the new phone and not move in with him.

reallysillydilemma · 10/12/2025 15:06

It wouldn’t affect anything. After rent and savings currently and all other expenses I have enough income left to cover it. He just seems to think that it is a bad idea.

Can you switch your crappy phone for his phone, if it works?
That way you save money, and everyone is happy.

InLoveWithAI · 10/12/2025 15:08

I just upgraded mine and there was nothing wrong with my old one 🤷🏽‍♀️

Glad I don't have a partner to try and tell me what to do.

MightyGoldBear · 10/12/2025 15:09

How much is your current contract?
I don't care much for phones so I'm changing to a £3 lebara sim from a £8 Vodafone one. Ive had my phone 6 years I've recently gone through my phone and deleted and cleaned up all the software. The battery lasts so much longer now.
Ultimately if you can afford it do whatever you want to do.

My current contract is £45. It would go up to £60 but like i said, I can afford it. Everything is on my phone - banking, payments, bus pass etc.

If you’ve had it 2.5 years are you already out of contract? If you are you are paying way too much . A lebara or smarty monthly sim with unlimited calls, texts and lots of data would be £6 or even less

Twinkletwinkly · 10/12/2025 15:22

I fear your problem isn’t your phone it’s your partner trying to control how you spend your own money

Medexpert · 10/12/2025 15:22

£60 is a ridiculous amount of money for a phone. You clearly want a very fancy one. Commiting to pay £60 for years is something really be consider.

People always thi k they can afford things when they take a contract. Then things happen months or years later and they become stressed and desperate because they can't afford payments any longer.

Unless you earn a large income, £60 a month for years for a phone is a big commitment for a luxury item.

Ok, but what is his actual reason for thinking it's a bad idea?

If you are going to live together, you will need to be able to offer up sensible financial reasoning to each other. If you can afford it and it doesn't affect him in any way then what is his problem?

Not for the handset, I renewed my airtime contract a couple of months ago.

To be honest I don’t see it as that big a deal- I can comfortably afford it and I need the phone. It will not put me into hardship in any way shape or form.
