To be utterly sick of this weather?

VaxMerstappen · 09/12/2025 09:15

We always get plenty of people moaning on here whenever we're lucky enough to get some warm weather and a few days of sunshine in summer, so how about one for the utterly crap weather we have now?

Last weekend was dismal, it felt like it didn't get light all weekend - just constant rain/drizzle and grey skies. Today open the curtains to yet more of the same, Storm Bram this time. Feels like it's been weeks since I've had any sun on my face and my SAD is back with vengeance. It feels like we're just living through near-perpetual darkness at the moment, all the fields and woodland walks have been turned into a sludgey hell and I'm already mentally counting down to the brighter, fresher, happier days of spring. Please tell me I'm not the only one?

And before anyone pipes up with that they actually enjoy this weather and how great it is for getting 'cosy' etc, surely you can't be serious?!

YABU - I love this type of weather
YANBU - I just want to hibernate till spring time

The amount of climate change already means the uk will be 10% wetter - and greyer

OrinocoGlow · 09/12/2025 09:18

You're not the only one. It's miserable. Yesterday I thought we're not far from the shortest day of the year and that it will start to get lighter next month. That cheers me up a little.

ContentedAlpaca · 09/12/2025 09:20

Today is awful but yesterday was 12 degrees and bright.
I hate the days that never seem to get light but I do feel like we've had more bright days than usual this year.

Do you get chance to get outside on the bright days?

In 12 days time. Sunday 21st at 3.03pm!! I will have a celebratory cup of tea.

November and December are my least favourite months for this reason. I hate driving in the dark but there is no choice right now. I like Jan as it’s the start of the lighter nights,
although I don’t like driving in icy
conditions either!

Bagsintheboot · 09/12/2025 09:23

It is winter and it is the UK. It is going to be dark and dull and rainy.

You may as well complain that grass is green.

We are actually very lucky in the UK in our weather. We don't risk losing our houses in tornadoes, or suffer the extreme hurricanes like the one that hit Jamaica not so long ago, or have floods that kill hundreds like in the Philippines, or experience winters with weeks of extreme cold and feet of snow lying for months...

I will take "a bit rubbish" over "actively dangerous" any day of the week.

WheresMyOtherSock · 09/12/2025 09:23

I actually love this weather, although appreciate I’m in the minority. I work from home and due to where I live, drive DD to school so for the most part we can both stay cosy. We’re in the Peak District so get a lot of rain/snow/cold but we just adapt - good waterproofs and the mindset of ‘it rains more than it doesn’t’ helps! We do have one super anti-rain greyhound though - no sign of a walk this morning but hopefully we’ll get a break from the rain at some point to pop out with him although being a greyhound, he doesn’t care either way 🙃

Agreed. We haven't been sleepwalking into this catastrophe for decades. We've been charging headlong into it and people are STILL in denial about it.

Justputsomeyoghurtonit · 09/12/2025 09:25

Hi OP. Sorry, I dont mind it at all! I also love heatwaves and snow!

I took my dog for a walk just after 5am, it was blowy but so very warm and quite nice and refreshing. Light drizzle.

No heating on this morning as it was so mild overnight. Slept with the window open.

Though it's taking a while to get light in my office!

FastFood · 09/12/2025 09:26

It's not that I love it or hate it it's just that it's the same each year and there's nothing we can do about it.
I also really don't think that a bit of rain is the end of the world.

Twilightstarbright · 09/12/2025 09:30

It’s really affecting me this year and it’s making my rheumatoid arthritis much worse. We are flying for some winter sun in January and I cannot wait.

SpottyAardvark · 09/12/2025 09:31

This is the reality of climate change. Winters in the U.K. are getting warmer, wetter & windier. The change is big enough, and it’s happening fast enough, that we all notice it in our daily lives.

I live in the East Midlands, a part of the country which is less prone to extreme weather. Yet in recent years we have seen unprecedented winter floods. Areas which are vulnerable to flooding have experienced it far more frequently than ever before. Areas which have never flooded before in living memory have been inundated. We haven’t had any proper, disruptive snowfall for years. It just doesn’t happen any more.

We have to prepare & adapt to the new realities.

Timebudda · 09/12/2025 09:47

I like it.
Its really rough where I am windy raining, darkish perfect for me.

billybear · 09/12/2025 09:51

i have a dog, could not keep a brolly up the last 2 days on her walk, i was like a drowned rat, so wet i had to take my pants off it had soaked me that much, roll on warm weather,

Sadcafe · 09/12/2025 09:52

It’s typically British isn’t it, complain if it’s warm, complain if it’s cold, complain it’s too dry/wet, the only reason I don’t like the constant rain is the fields are like bogs for dog walking, other than that I really don’t care

itsmycheese · 09/12/2025 09:53

I really do prefer the cold and rain. Hot weather, particularly if it's sunny makes me feel a bit ill, sort of disorientated. I sometimes wonder if reverse SAD is possible (obviously the main cause would be different!).

MiddleAgedDread · 09/12/2025 09:53

YANBU, I don't mind cold, bright crisp winter weather but this ever lasting dampness is depressing me. Even the days it's not rained (which we seemed to have escaped more than other parts of the country) it's just been dull and everywhere is wet and it never properly gets daylight.

Monvelo · 09/12/2025 09:55

Very flooded around here. All the fields. Lots of cancelled trains, sat waiting for an hour for a connection. Luckily there is an indoor area!

Push the boat out! Have a digestive with it!

I don’t mind this time of year so much, as everywhere always looks very sparkly and festive ready for Christmas. Makes the dark weather feel a little better. I hate January and February - still cold, damp and dark, with the added possibility of snow and black ice.

At least the days are becoming longer again, though. I always feel cheered when we have passed the shortest day, and by the end of January you can really notice the difference.

wizzler · 09/12/2025 10:12

We still have a hosepipe ban in Sheffield so we need more of the wet stuff. Reservoirs were so empty in the summer I thought we would be using stand pipes in the street

toastandegg · 09/12/2025 10:13

I hate getting up in the dark, then it doesn’t seem to get light all day before it gets dark again. I don’t mind cold, crisp weather it’s just this constant damp that gets me down

Mistyglade · 09/12/2025 10:14

I hate it too. This time of year is always a case of stick the old British stoical hat on and push on, somehow. It doesn’t help that I have a chest infection and don’t have the energy to stick any decorations or bloody Xmas tree up.

blobby10 · 09/12/2025 10:17

I don't hate it anymore than I hate the sun coming up at 4am but it can be depressing leaving for work in the dark and not getting home until its dark. Not a big fan of all the wet as the dog is a pain to dry off but its good to see the reservoirs fuller.

Like a PP I'm counting down to 21st December after which it gets a little bit lighter each evening. Grin.

smallglassbottle · 09/12/2025 10:20

I'm happy to see the rain after it being so dry all summer and I nearly lost a newly planted hedge. A nearby wildlife pond dried up, but it's back now and the ducks have returned.
