To be utterly sick of this weather?

We always get plenty of people moaning on here whenever we're lucky enough to get some warm weather and a few days of sunshine in summer, so how about one for the utterly crap weather we have now?

Last weekend was dismal, it felt like it didn't get light all weekend - just constant rain/drizzle and grey skies. Today open the curtains to yet more of the same, Storm Bram this time. Feels like it's been weeks since I've had any sun on my face and my SAD is back with vengeance. It feels like we're just living through near-perpetual darkness at the moment, all the fields and woodland walks have been turned into a sludgey hell and I'm already mentally counting down to the brighter, fresher, happier days of spring. Please tell me I'm not the only one?

And before anyone pipes up with that they actually enjoy this weather and how great it is for getting 'cosy' etc, surely you can't be serious?!

YABU - I love this type of weather
YANBU - I just want to hibernate till spring time

It’s miserable but I’d take it over snow any day

Winteriscoming80 · 09/12/2025 12:36

I’m more concerned with how mild it is but yep the relentless rain is getting to much now, ironically there is still a hose pipe ban where I live!

nam3c4ang3 · 09/12/2025 12:37

This is such a british post i love it - you can never win. 😂

DonicaLewinsky · 09/12/2025 12:38

The summer humid heat in a country that's not built for it and the constant bucketing down we seem to be getting at the moment are both bad.

SheinIsShite · 09/12/2025 12:33

Or in western Scotland.

Or Lancashire.

VaxMerstappen · 09/12/2025 12:49

Netcurtainnelly · 09/12/2025 12:17

Exactly. Perhaps OP would prefer thick snow and ice.

I actually wouldn't mind that, yes! Snow is rare enough to still be a novelty, and surely most of us still feel that child-like excitement when it's snowing heavily enough to settle and we wake up to a good covering? It makes everywhere look so beautiful and it's definitely far more peaceful when it means there's less traffic on the roads too!

But sadly whenever we've had snow recently, normally it's promptly melted within about a day or turns into that horrible slush that is lethal to walk on when it freezes again over night.

The only thing that bothers me about it is that it's so warm. It's December, it ought to be COLD. The climate change is so obvious, it scares the crap out of me. I want to give politicians and big businesses CEOs worldwide a bloody good shake. There's only so much the public can do with recycling and sustainable choices, we need major change on a global scale.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 09/12/2025 12:55

Yeah, where are all those autumn lovers now with their idealistic crap about crunchy leaves and snuggling up in jumpers with hot chocolate?

I hate this weather. Bring on the summer drought!

HoneyParsnipSoup · 09/12/2025 12:23

You’re best placed that’s why. Try being on the SW peninsula. It’s like something from Father Ted and had been for weeks now.

Certainly feels like Craggy Island where I am in the SW today.

Storm whatever-it’s-called is being a right tosser at the moment.

redboxer321 · 09/12/2025 13:06

And many of us can't even console ourselves with the idea that we can go to live in sunny Spain when we retire any more. Or even Scandinavia which might be the place for summer sun by the time I retire.

Dollymylove · 09/12/2025 13:18

Its winter 🤣 this is the kind of weather get in Britain in case you havent noticed.
Roll on summer ☀️

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 09/12/2025 13:19

It wouldn't be so bad if it was cold, sunny days or even snow. It's this shit, gloomy, wet days that gets me. It will take weeks for the ground to dry out.

I can't remember the last time we actually had a sunny day. And looks like the only sunny day is tomorrow when I'm sat in an office all day.

Oh well only 3.5 months until the clocks go forward. And only 2. 5 months until meteorological Spring.

However I agree about it being mild, my spring bulbs have started growing.😬

TheTaupeScroller · 09/12/2025 13:19

I hate it. I don't specially like getting wet, and the pile and pile of dirty laundry are insane.

I know it's a controversial subject on MN, but rain = mud = filthy clothes/ sports kits and wet shoes. I think the best so far is having to wash 4 different set of clothes for 1 child for 1 day! School uniform, PE kit, football kit and evening scouts.

I am tempted to get a second washing machine, and have one run for normal laundry, and one for the extra "rainy day" laundry to save some time 😂

PandoraSocks · 09/12/2025 13:20

Yanbu. I want some cold crisp days!

Nutmuncher · 09/12/2025 13:20

Bagsintheboot · 09/12/2025 09:23

It is winter and it is the UK. It is going to be dark and dull and rainy.

You may as well complain that grass is green.

We are actually very lucky in the UK in our weather. We don't risk losing our houses in tornadoes, or suffer the extreme hurricanes like the one that hit Jamaica not so long ago, or have floods that kill hundreds like in the Philippines, or experience winters with weeks of extreme cold and feet of snow lying for months...

I will take "a bit rubbish" over "actively dangerous" any day of the week.

Agreed. I’d rather a few dull damp months than hunkering down for hurricanes or monsoons.

Dutchhouse14 · 09/12/2025 13:24

Its the greyness and lack of sunshine that gets me.
I dont mind cold weather and some days of rain or snow but its the constant cover of grey cloud that gets to me.
Sunshine makes almost everything better- a bright cold winters day is wonderful.
I also love the hot sunny wrather so never complain about a glorious summer!

Letmehaveabloodyusernameplease · 09/12/2025 13:26

Agree. I was looking forward to December in the hope of nice crisp, sunny days but no such luck!

BerthaFlapjack · 09/12/2025 13:27

I find it really helps not to take the weather personally. It is partly caused by climate change but winters are frequently wet and grey.

I'm afraid I'm one of the "It's not the wrong weather, it's the wrong clothing" sort of people, which won't be much use here.

I have a friend who grew up in Shetland, now living in the south of England who loves that we get actual daylight in the winter here. Shetland gets near constant darkness for several weeks.

Nothungrycat · 09/12/2025 13:30

I'm in Somerset. Happy to live on a hill, so there's no risk of flooding, but the bloody wind and the sideways-blowing rain are really getting to me. And everything outside is a bit damp and slimy, even when it's not raining. Once the gales die down I'm going to put up some outside fairy lights just to cheer myself up.

WalkDontWalk · 09/12/2025 13:30

I actually enjoy this weather. It is great for getting 'cosy' etc. I am serious.

But then I don't have to leave the house if I don't want to. So I'm not so much enjoying the weather as enjoying defying it.

Hometimeithink · 09/12/2025 13:33

I am in Australia and am flying home on Thursday. Have absolutely loved it here but am ready now for snuggling up and embracing Blighty. Am not going to lie that the sunshine has been glorious!
Christmas decs out here just look so out of place.

QwestSprout · 09/12/2025 13:37

I don't know if 'enjoy' would be the right word but the bizarre mildness (West coast of Scotland) has so far meant we've used 100kWh less of gas compared to the same period last year...so that's good.

In fairness where I live 'dreich and grey' covers a large percentage of the year's days.

I mean... It's winter. I don't want to be mean but does it come as a surprise to you every year?

whirlyhead · 09/12/2025 13:42

I'm semi-retired in Spain, and the days are usually sunny and not that cold at this time of year. It's bloody freezing at night though! Today it's early 20s so quite pleasant. When we get rain, it chucks it down, which is a relief, as we need the water for when all the tourists arrive in summer to use it all up... (they use about 6 times more than residents, I think).

I don't miss the miserable grey winter skies in england I must admit. I mainly miss the supermarkets.

There are a few trees with blossom on near me. It's terrifying honestly.
