What kind of a tax doesn't take account of how much money you have? It's all just a bloody con.

The people who objected where the ones who enjoyed a free ride.

Something has to be done as tax payers have had enough of subsidising the takers.

Now you're just making things up.

It was a fundamentally unfair tax that did not take into account the ability to pay

Because they have low income.

They should still pay unless they are happy not to use NHS, schools roads

Balletpoint · 09/12/2025 14:22

Are you saying UC is subject to tax in the same way PAYE is?

No. But everyone pays CT and VAT eg.

? If it is made up. Let's scrap council tax and even thoughts of poll tax and instead have a flat rate tax for workers and those on benefits.

Employees pay tax and VAT. Benefit people should do the same.

So you want a flat rate tax for everyone? Any personal allowance? Same rate paid on cgt, corporation tax etc?

Not one council in the UK funds the NHS.

People on benefits pay VAT when they buy a vat-able item. What makes you think they don't

Are you aware that we all have a tax free amount on PAYE?

That is an additional tax for everyone if Council tax is abolished. The main point is if you use Ciuncil services you have to pay. No exceptions.

Yes. But benefits seem to be tax free. There is the problem!!!!!

Btw, I’m not an employee but I still pay income tax.

To be fair, if you aren't from the UK, you may not know how our tax system works. You always need to bear in mind how many overseas posters are obsessed with making Britain fairer and throwing off the yoke of woke liberal oppression that prevents free speech and criticising the government

Employers, employees, pensioners pay income tax over the allowance. Benefits need to be taxed.

Yes if you earn under the threshold.

I repeat benefits need to be taxed the same as any other income.

"Benefit people" ?

Odd turn of phrase 🤔

Is 'claimants' more suitable?

Right enough 🤣

That isn't relevant for council tax though because most of it is spent on social care and in particular social care for the elderly. Dividing angels on the pinhead of how often you go to the library or how much rubbish you produce is pointless.

Well I suppose then those of us (of our relatives)who never used social care for the elderly really out to get a discount lol.

Really? So pensioners in receipt of pension credit, should they be paying tax?

Same as PAYE then!

Of course, if over the tax code threshold.
