Council tax is a c**t

What kind of a tax doesn't take account of how much money you have? It's all just a bloody con.

Finding fair ways of taxing people has long been a bone of contention. Council tax is felt to be unfair because the property values on which it is based are not regularly re-assessed - but if they were the process would cost a fortune and have to come out of ..... higher tax!

Because "need" and "want" are (a) not synonyms, and (b) subjective. However nuance isn't really going down well at the moment.

You see, for a reason I can't quite explain, I knew that would come up short ...

what really pissed me off was the council tax going up AND now charging for my green bin.

Green waste is not an essential service and you have a choice. You can compost your green waste.

My point is it used to be included in the price of CT and the CT went up while services went down.

A fair tax system would also take lifetime contribution into account. Two people can earn the same over their working lives, yet one pays far more later simply for being prudent. The irony is that the state lectures people about self sufficiency (private pension, encouraging saving etc) on the one hand then it changes the rules to punish those behaviours on the other.

What you get out should take into account what you put in, for the majority. Homeowners should not be on the hook to pay for decades of political mismanagement which is what is happening with the council tax system at the moment. This is just the start.

Unfortunately due to central Government policies, there's an awful lot more statutory things your council has to do which can't be covered by the increases in the CT. Their only option is to cut non-statutory services to be able to carry out those mandated from the centre.

JoshLymanSwagger · 16/12/2025 06:37

For every £1 Council Tax collected, my Local Authority spends 70p of it on social care.

It's not just £250 a month to get my bin emptied every other week...even if it feels like that.

I completely get that. Since this thread I’ve looked at the breakdown for my council and it’s frightening how much the are responsible for.

having said that, I’m still pretty salty about my green bin and 3 weekly collection on the other bins!! 😂😂

The poll tax was also linked to your right to vote, so was undemocratic. This provoked the backlash more than the proposed payments. Where the very wealthiest would pay a fraction of their income. Now the goalposts seemed to have moved and sights appear to be on people who are working to keep paying more.

It is actually. Look it up.

Feel free to argue about definitions whilst the country burns, because that the important part🙄

No they are not.

No it wasn't. You could vote regardless of whether you paid the poll tax or not.

What you may be trying to say (correct me if I am wrong) is that the electoral roll was used as part of the evidence that a person should be paying the poll tax. So registering to vote was effectively "signing up" to the poll tax.

I had just graduated then, but had friends who tried to stay off the list by not registering to vote.

Councils got quite creative at trying to wrinkle out non payers. One ruse was a survey about free bin nags that asked "How many adults live here ?" which was cross checked with the poll tax register.

The 1991 census was also used to check the register - despite repeated assurances it would not be (I proved it myself). Because of this hundreds of thousands of people "disappeared" from the census. Thus fucking up civic planning for the next 3 decades. If you wonder why services are shit where you live - that will be a part of it.

All of which shows that taxing people is hard. They have a nasty habit of moving around faster than the systems can cope. And unless and until you have a system that can be updated and reconciled in real time (we don't) then you will just create an unmanageable mess.
