To be MURDEROUS (I need desk fan recommendations!)

I’m in the office at work and it’s currently 27.8 degrees. Am a bit beside myself 😅

Does anyone (serious question) have any recommendations for nearly silent desk fans?! I don’t think I’m perimenopausal yet (it’s imminent) but I do get migraines, and heat is a really big trigger for me. Even without a migraine I HATE being hot.

It just clicked up to 27.9 degrees. I might die.

Not sure about desk fans but I used to have a cool mat which had a thin jelly inside. It was invaluable when I was pregnant and for the year after when (a) I regularly overheated and (b) my mother insisted babies need a warm house and cranked up the thermostat regularly. My mat looked like an orange slice! I used to either sit on it or put my feet on it depending on what I was doing.

These are good. I know someone who has an earlier version of the Eva Polar Light that I've borrowed and used on my desk when they were away. You fill them with water and put it right next to you so it cools your immediate space. I thought it was very effective in a heat wave, no air con situation.

The one I used was quiet but I don't know much about the various other versions or the newer ones. I'd check the reviews.

The down side is that they use cartridges which have a cost and you absolutely must replace them as and when they tell you to. If you leave the cartridge for year on year, it may go mouldly and then be a health hazard but I really liked it and was seriously considering getting one but then it stopped being heat wave hot.

A random tip not to do with fans but if you cool your ears for some reason it really cools you down. Splashing cold water on your ears really helps - or even just wetting them with a bit of cold water out of a drinking bottle tipped onto your fingers.

Thank you for this! I’m going to look into these for home definitely!

Ooh I’ve not done ears, but often do wrists and forearms. I can’t really have water around at work as I handle lots of books/photos/documents etc!

I have one for the dog! I might nick it 😅

Does anyone in your office want it to be 27 degrees? I mean, I like it warm, but more like 22-23. Can't you all agree to turn it down a bit?

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 09/12/2025 07:30

A wet cloth around your neck is very cooling. What’s making it so hot?

The boss is perpetually cold, and it’s a very old building with very old fashioned heating methods where you just have to wait for it to die down and hope nobody chucks another log on! I have a passive aggressive fan running, but it’s really loud and inadequate 😫 Only 23 today, thank chuff!

Try Meaco fans. Reasonably quiet.

I have this one. It made summer bearable this year.

I LOVE my Meaco at home, but the little desk version hasn’t been available for months now! I’m going to swoop as soon as it’s back. They’re the only fans I’ve ever been able to sleep in the same room as 😅

Come work with me! It’s underground with no heating and utter bliss Grin
I had a thermal vest, t shirt, jumper and cardigan on today

Haha! At my last job we were in thermals most of the year too, I just want a normal job where I’m not thinking about the temperature all the time 😅

If it's your boss who is cold, why not discuss it with her. Are there other people who feel as you do?

You can get under desk leg heater/warmer things that are on Amazon - they look like a three sided screen.

It's much easier and fairer to make one person warmer than make the whole room suffer with over-hot. Over-cold in an office building (ie. inside) is never going to be as unpleasant as over-hot. You can put on more layers or have mini heater or something but over hot gives you a big headache is insoluable.

I'd discuss it with colleagues and speak to your boss about it collectively if it's her that is the instigator of the power-heat.
