To not go to work Christmas team day on day off?

Slipperati · 08/12/2025 02:50

I know this should be under “work” but I want some more views.

Work Christmas “team day” falls on my day off, just as summer team day did, and both do every year. They’re casual activity, 15 ish people, all v nice but not super exciting.

AIBU not to go in for it? I can’t be bothered, I’ve worked my socks off the past few weeks and I’m tired and I don’t want to give up my day off this close to Christmas.

what do you do if you’re part time and your socials always fall on your day off? Also I’m not local… it’s 90 mins commute.

Yours, Grinch

We have a few part timers in our team at work. I can be flexible with my days, so my manager usually asks me to swap my non working day so we can all go out together. So I still get a day off, just a different one.

Would your manager let you swap your day off to a different day?

Pavementworrier · 08/12/2025 02:59

Id be doing a victory dance for the get out of it free excuse

I simply don’t have the capacity… but even still I would probably feel cheeky for asking! But I def don’t have capacity to lose a day to it. I’m tired :-(

I agree with @Pavementworrier, but it’s dreadful management that these days are always on your NWD. Is it Friday?

Yes. I don’t want them to change it on my part as I don’t really want to go though!

You don’t want to go and have the perfect excuse not to, can’t see the problem here?!

Umy15r03lcha1 · 08/12/2025 04:09

Can you swap working days for one week so team day lands on a working day and you still get a day off?

Fuckitydoodah · 08/12/2025 04:17

It's on your day off, you don't want to go. So, don't go. You're not obligated to and they can't make you. If it makes it feel easier then say you have an appointment that you can't get out of, or plans with friends etc.

If you went to the summer one then I wouldn’t feel bad for missing this.

Me too. What an utter waste of everyone's time.

Zanatdy · 08/12/2025 05:52

Just say you have plans on your day off.

MinnieMountain · 08/12/2025 05:54

I’ve said I’ve already got plans for my day off in those circumstances.

XWKD · 08/12/2025 05:56

It's your day off, so don't go.

ExtraOnions · 08/12/2025 05:57

I’m going to mine, I swapped my day off. “Team Day” isn’t real work, so it’s like a day off anyway, plus a days annual leave moved to when I really want it in December.

BeenChangedForGood · 08/12/2025 06:06

“So sorry, I can’t make it. I already have plans as it’s my day off. You guys have a great time!”

Who organises it? My manager always organised our night out for her days off as she liked time to get ready then the next day to be hungover. But her being off meant me working so I’d be on 8am-6pm, need to get ready in work as no time to go home, then dinner etc at 7pm where I have to cart a bag of stuff with me from getting ready, then I’d be leaving the house for work again at 7.10am to do the 40ish min walk there.

This year I decided to just say I was organising it and have made when I’m off so she has to do my usual routine and she is PISSED and threatening not to come because it’s unfair 🙄

Empress13 · 08/12/2025 06:11

I wouldn’t go in unless it was something I really wanted to participate in. If that were the case I’d ask to change my day off

raspberrieswithchocolate · 08/12/2025 06:14

You don't have to go as it's your day off, enjoy your time off doing whatever it is you want to do.

Conniebygaslight · 08/12/2025 06:22

Hell no. Not a chance….

Wishihadanalgorithm · 08/12/2025 06:56

I’m delighted that our Christmas do is on a day I don’t work. I only live 20 minutes away too but nothing could convince me to attend.

I like a lot of my colleagues but I feel like I spend so much of my time with them, I’d rather spend my own time with my family.

Pricelessadvice · 08/12/2025 07:00

I can’t think of anything worse than a team day, especially on my day off!

Why would it be cheeky or affect your capacity? You still work the same amount of days.
Your workload is a discussion to have with your manager if it means something else will have to be dropped, but usually team events are to be prioritised.

If you can't swap days that's different, but usually that's the way to go.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 08/12/2025 07:19

We would have let you change your working days that week, if you wanted to. So you were in for same number of days.

Nopenousername · 08/12/2025 07:20

I hate things like that but work ft so difficult to get out of them. Thank your lucky starts (and obviously don’t go to anything work related on your day off)

Bagwyllydiart · 08/12/2025 07:28

Your day off, your rules. YANBU.

TeatimeForTheSoul · 08/12/2025 07:31

Choice 1: attend and take TOiL
Choice 2: have a lovely day everyone but as it’s my non-working day I have other commitments so won’t be able to attend
