Should stocking gifts be wrapped?

DH’s were wrapped, mine were not as a child. Not fussed either way, just intrigued to see what is the norm! Now got a 1 year old so need to decide…..

YABU - wrapped
YANBU- unwrapped

Wrapped definitely. A stocking only sounds right if the wrapping paper crinkles when you pick it up.

DramaAlpaca · 07/12/2025 21:33

In my house, everything gets wrapped.

JudgeBread · 07/12/2025 21:33

My mam used the wrap the ones near the top and leave the rest

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 07/12/2025 21:33

Unwrapped in this house.

GoAwayNaughtyPigeon · 07/12/2025 21:34

I absolutely cannot be arsed, neither can DH. If he wanted them wrapped he's welcome to wrap them himself...

Applespearsandpeaches · 07/12/2025 21:34

Yes, it slows them down! Not at age one though, I wouldn’t worry either way with a baby.

It might depend how many gifts they get though - mine don’t get a large number of gifts so if I didn’t wrap stockings they’d only unwrap half a dozen items. If you’re more of a present mountain kind of family then maybe it’s less important.

CastleCrasher · 07/12/2025 21:34

A million times over - wrap them!! Slows down the process and helps dc, especially little ones, enjoy it more. Wouldn't dream of doing it any other way, ours LOVE their stocking!

Needmorelego · 07/12/2025 21:36

Wrapped.
Because it makes the opening of the stockings take longer.
This is important if it's being done at 6am but you don't actually want to get up yet.
(slightly different this year because you have a baby but in the next few years definitely)

FunMustard · 07/12/2025 21:37

I used to wrap when mine were little, as they enjoyed opening every little thing.

Now they're teens, and their stockings are mainly chocolate and gift cards - no, not wrapped.

Stockings in our house are opened when the child wakes up, they then wake siblings and open together. They're allowed to wake us from 6 (although I'm up before them!).

BobblyBobbleHat · 07/12/2025 21:37

Definitely wrapped, it's the most exciting part.

stayok · 07/12/2025 21:40

When I was a child, mine were unwrapped.

I wrap non-food presents but tend to leave things like eg Lindt choc Santa unwrapped, because they look prettier as they are. I also leave a soft toy for dd unwrapped so I can make it look like it’s peeking out of the top.

JammyDodgersandPeas · 07/12/2025 21:43

Wrapped, in a collection of different paper. When we're staying at the in-laws, MIL brings out a bag of saved pieces from the previous year and we wrap on Xmas Eve with a sherry. Means they unwrap slowly!

YellowStockings · 07/12/2025 22:07

I do a mix - the less exciting stuff (eg. this year I'm adding a tub of fancy hot chocolate) doesn't get wrapped, but the more expensive things (like earrings!) and other little surprises do. My DD is ten though. When she was smaller I wrapped everything to make her go slower!

Bythewayimgoingouttonight · 07/12/2025 22:12

I wrap stocking fillers in tissue paper, it’s so much easier than proper wrapping paper and tape and so much nicer than unwrapped.

BeBesideTheSea · 07/12/2025 22:15

I also wrap in tissue paper and fold and tuck the ends over. Still slows down unwrapping, keeps things as little surprises, but soooo much less faff than paper and tape.

IvyOrangesCandles · 07/12/2025 22:17

Mix here as well.

Posithor · 07/12/2025 22:24

I had a mix and do a mix. Kind of adds to the intrigue 😂

Tumbleweed101 · 07/12/2025 22:33

Unwrapped when my children were small but started wrapping as they got older (teens) as some of the small but main gifts were included.

MaybeMrs · 07/12/2025 22:35

I wrap with tissue paper.

categorychaos · 07/12/2025 22:37

What’s a “stocking gift”?

curious79 · 07/12/2025 22:40

Guess who’ll be wrapping them. Now you decide what you have time for. Problem solved

mismomary · 07/12/2025 22:41

Most wrapped but a couple not. Something cuddly and something edible HAS to be left unwrapped!

Clefable · 07/12/2025 22:41

Wrapped for maximum crinkling. I am confident in this decision because DH does all the wrapping Grin

SecretSquirrelLoo · 07/12/2025 22:43

A mixture. Things like clementines or sweets or chewing gum that turns your mouth green don’t get wrapped.

TeenLifeMum · 07/12/2025 22:43

Absolutely not! Ours have so many little bits and with 3dc I just don’t have time for that. Under tree family gifts are wrapped. I think dc would get pretty bored unwrapping stocking gifts (we do things like funky pens, fidget toy, chocolate, socks). They have plenty to unwrap from family so it would be over kill here.
