Hypocrisy

So I've just indulged myself by listening to 3 of my favourite songs on YouTube. All by Don Mclean. Vincent, Bye bye Miss American pie and The Mountains of Mourne. And he is beautiful. Young and innocent looking. And performs wonderfully.

But at the back of my mind I am concious of the Domestic Violence charges made against him, one at least that he pleaded guilty to.

Normally I am black and white in my views. If a music star, actor, politician or public figure is found to be a person whose private life and character doesn't coincide with what I find acceptable then I cancel them. I just don't want to know.
But I have such difficulty in this case.

Is it reasonable to still enjoy and take such pleasure in the performance of a man who has been found guilty of crimes against women?
Or am I being unreasonable and totally betraying the woman/ women he has hurt by actually taking great delight in his music and performance, and, quite honestly, his physical appearance?

Sometimes people plead guilty just because it’s the best option. Our justice system is so flawed and is about to get worse with no jury trials 🤦‍♀️

I went to see a very controversial performer last week.
Long time fan, love his music, loved his performance.

He's been accused of multiple things, but I'm not the police, the judge or the jury, just a fan, so while he's still free to perform I'm gonna go see him.

So I vote YANBU

It’s the age old argument about separating art from the artist isn’t it. I don’t think there is an answer in all honesty, although I do think there are levels of criminality that can’t be overlooked. Think Ian Watkins.

I'm usually in favour of separating art from artist, because let's be real, if we were to boycott work by anyone who had ever done anything gross or criminal in their life there'd not be a great deal left.

I make exceptions for certain things though. Like I loved Lostprophets but I haven't listened to a single thing by them since the trial details came out. I just can't. Maybe that makes me a hypocrite, idk.

Well yes I agree with you about Ian Watkins. That is something I could never get past.

For me I Just feel so sad when I see Don Maclean when he is so beautiful, singing such beautiful lyrics, it really upsets me that I can't just enjoy the beauty without having moral dilemmas intruding.
