To think social housing should be means-tested annually like benefits?

EqualLedgerJay · 07/12/2025 17:25

Situations change, why should lifetime tenancies exist if income rises? AIBU to think fairness cuts both ways?

It’s what happens when you pay more tax into the system than you take out. How did you think it worked?

But I thought everyone in SH earns 100k? 🙃

That £900 will be around 60% of the cost, the other £600 a month is paid for by me.

How do you work that out? I pay over £600 tax per month on my pensions. I’m paying for kids etc I haven’t got. 🙄

XenoBitch · 11/12/2025 16:25

RadialEffergy · 11/12/2025 16:21

Nope, they pay less tax than they take out and the rent is a token that will barely cover the maintenance let alone recover the build cost or opportunity cost.

Edited

How do you know what my mum earns and pays in tax?
They have also lived in their house for 40 years. The rent they pay has not paid for the actual building for years. In fact, the house was probably paid off before they moved in. The rent they pay goes back into the pot.

Their rent is about £700pm. What house costs that much to maintain? I will tell you now... not theirs.

RadialEffergy · 11/12/2025 16:23

Why did you think that?

I don't.

I just find it funny that this thread is either they earn 100k and shouldn't be in SH to I pay for their rent and assumptions that no one in SH works. Both extremes with nothing between.

The reality is that those in SH are not all the same and the generalisations are tiresome.

You just don't understand how SH works and is funded. It has been explained multiple times on this thread.

You can tell yourself whatever you want if it makes you feel better, but please don’t patronise the people who pay for it all by expecting them to go along with it.

Itiswhysofew · 11/12/2025 16:33

Imagine living with that looming over your head. Yes, council tenants living on a good estate are fortunate, but they shouldnt have to live with uncertainty. Life's a struggle for so many as it is.

It's a sad state of affairs that councils don't provide sufficient social housing, but tenants shouldn't be penalised for that. I say good luck to them!

? Sounds like you’re disagreeing with yourself but you’ve quoted me for some reason, not sure what I can add to it. You’re both right.

Paying for something (which you are not) does not magically impart you with knowledge about it. I mean, look at any thread about benefits. Total ignorance.
This one is no different.

Apart from it does cover the maintenance management and build cost and there is no opportunity cost because it is just…. Social housing. Mainly privately owned, so the public obviously get zero say in what they think private owners could do with it.

Excuse me, because I won’t go along with the delusion that social housing isn’t tax payer subsidised I must be trolling? Laughable.

Boomer55 · 11/12/2025 16:52

Some social housing tenants, not all, usually cost less than private tenants, paying landlords, or those, with mortgages, who claim top up benefits, free nursery hours, , free anything’s etc. 🤷‍♀️

As a working mum, decades ago, I didn't claim anything, and never have.

So, if anyone has a problem with me paying full rent in SH then tough. 👍

I’m going nowhere. 🙄

It’s not going to be up to you though, just like it wasn’t up to the net tax payers to be clobbered again to pay for it all. Or private renters to be turfed out as LL exit the market in their 1000s. Or independent school kids to have to leave their school. Or generational farmers to lose their farms.

The push back will come in a few years and to say attitudes have hardened would be putting it very mildly. But good luck to you.

How will forcing people out of social housing, people who abide by the rules and pay the rent, affect the tax payer? Are you expecting a cheque in the post?

No- it’s a fact, and very easily verifiable. You posting fake news and you have been told over and over again that you don’t understand social housing.

Yet despite being wrong you persist- you are surely trying to hurt the posters in the thread who live in social housing and make yourself feel good. It’s horrible to see.

I’ve got a legally, long held, lifetime assured tenancy. Provided I pay my rent (I do), keep the property in good order (I do), and I don’t cause anti social behaviour (I don’t’), then I’m safe. I’m also a pensioner now.👍

If you think any government would start with me, or those like me, you’re deluded.

However, if they tried, I’d have them in court so fast their arses wouldn't touch base. 👍

Paying off the mortgages of private LL, mostly. Some of it will be going to HAs and councils for CH rent, but the vast majority of it will be paying off an asset for a LL.

That £15 billion is housing benefit payments.

You’re probably right, it’s unacceptable once you’re retired to be forced to move in my opinion. It will be younger people who it applies ti. But saying that, they went after children’s education choices, they went after the winter fuel allowance, they’ve gone after private renters, they’ve gone after farmers, they’ve gone after small business owners, they’ve gone after property owners so you never know.

It literally says that £15billion is spent on housing benefit. Not social housing.

In 2022/23, housing benefit expenditure was estimated at £15.4 billion

Not everyone in SH gets HB. My parents don't. A lot of that figure goes into the pockets of private landlords, and not even back into council coffers to put back into SH.

notatinydancer · 11/12/2025 17:33

So you move out of your social housing , then lose your job ? Become a widow , become sick ?
Who pays your or your (more expensive) private rent. Incomes can go up but they can come down again.
I think though if you’re a single person who’s kids have all left there is a possibility of being moved to a one bedroom flat or house.
A relative wants to do this , but nothing 1 bedroom available in our area atm.
