I’m just focusing on these 2 channels cuz I was born early 70s and everyone says

‘remember when we had 3 channels’ and I be like -

“excuse me? We had 2! No one really watched bbc2 or Channel 4!’

so - I grew up with TWO channels - main ones BBC1 and ITV.

i don’t use Netflix or any other streaming services which are now to many to mention - just 2 channels for me - BBC1 and ITV.

So what do people think of what’s on offer this Xmas Day on these 2 channels?

And this is why people increasingly don’t watch regular tv anymore. I wouldn’t have a clue what’s on and now I’ve seen the list it just reinforces my decision to move to streaming. Only a matter of time for the regular tv model dies a long overdue death.
In this house we’re all looking forward to
Stranger Things on Netflix. Can’t wait!

That’s the thing I only watch regular TV and never stream! 😭

I am literally making like it’s 1983!!!! 😭

Stranger Things ??!

that’s completely unfamiliar to me !! I mean I was in Tesco the other day and saw Stranger Things emblazoned on PJs and T Shirts in their clothing range!! I mean wtf?!

For a solely bbc1/Itv girl I’m baffled!!

I'm of a similar vintage and we definitely watched all four channels. My family loved period drama. The Forsyte Saga, I Claudius, The Duchess of Duke Street, The Six Wives of Henry VIII, Elizabeth R etc were all first shown on BBC2. I remember as a small child watching the first series of Fawlty Towers which was also first shown on BBC2. Channel 4 also had some great dramas and in its early years would repeat Upstairs Downstairs on Saturday nights.

HostaCentral · 07/12/2025 09:32

I'm pretty much 95% Netflix and Prime these days.

OP Stranger Things is HUGE..... You are missing so much great TV by not being on streaming channels. Seriously, most if the best series and films are now in streaming services.

I was born in the 70s also. You had all 4 channels in the 80s and then five and so on.
Sounds like you need to move with the times.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/12/2025 09:32

Any Ghost Story from the Beeb?

A couple of years ago there was (IIRC) an M R James, ‘The Mezzotint’, which was brilliant. So well done and exceedingly creepy!

SaintlyLady · 07/12/2025 09:33

Frynye · 07/12/2025 09:17

But why! IPlayer and ITVX are easy to use and have loads of content

Ah .. I DO actually use iPlayer to watch the TOTP repeats on BBC4 on Fridays and I listen to radio 2 via BBC sounds

so I do ‘cheat’ and watch an ‘unconventional’ channel - BBC4!!

Amandaland is very good indeed, and I like CtM although it’s not as strong as it was a decade ago, when Jessica Raine and Miranda Hart etc were in it. I’m looking forward to both.

Nothing appeals on ITV.

I stopped watching the soaps in around 2016.

BBC unlikely to get another Gavin & Stacey 2024 moment for many years, I suppose.

ExtraOnions · 07/12/2025 09:36

Last year we had Wallace & Grommit … something anyone could enjoy.. this year a lot of episodes of “series” so if you haven’t watched previous ones you probably won’t know what’s going on. Would sooner have had a one off of something.

GentleSheep · 07/12/2025 09:37

I'll try and share some schedules I found on FB. Images incoming hopefully!

Not much for us there. We'll probably watch gladiators, the wheel and Amandaland.

I have a visceral hatred of Mrs Brown's Boys. It was voted the best Sitcom of the 21st Century so obviously people like it. Not me.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 07/12/2025 09:45

This is why people are going to streaming providers instead. Where's the Christmas Day film on BBC1? No wonder no one's watching it and that line-up makes me question paying my licence fee.

I'd have shown Frozen on Christmas Eve to wind the kiddies up with excitement, sprung the money to have Wicked on Christmas Day as the blockbuster family film and finished with Tangled on Boxing Day, all at 3.10.

HeadyLamarr · 07/12/2025 09:45

I haven't watched ITV in years, except when they have the 6 Nations match I want, and even then it's not a patch on BBC.

Of the programmes listed, I would happily watch Raiders but we have it on Blu-ray, so would opt for that rather than telly.

Only Connect is the best thing on terrestrial telly.

Neighbours87 · 07/12/2025 09:46

looking forward to Amandaland, scarecrows wedding and gladiators. Will watch Amanda land on catch up though.

SilverPink · 07/12/2025 09:47

The only thing I can recall watching on regular tv in the last year is the new Alan Partridge, and Wallace and Gromit last Christmas.

Netflix, Prime, Apple TV, Disney and YouTube all the way here.

TheRosesAreInBloom · 07/12/2025 09:47

SaintlyLady · 07/12/2025 09:24

@AhBiscuits

ok I’ve listed the programs from both channels from 3pm as I think this is the important bit - but can I just say

THERE IS NO TOP OF THE POPS AT 2PM ON BBC1!! THIS IS SACRILEGE, SURELY???!!

I MEAN TOTP ISN’T A PROGRAM! ITS AN INSTITUTION!!!!!!!

Have to agree with this.

The only shows I would watch from your listings would be The Wheel and The 1% Club.

RoamingToaster · 07/12/2025 09:49

My parents will have Mrs Brown’s Boys on. They were in the audience for the filming 😂
It’s so bad! I have young children so maybe miss it because of them playing in another room.

SnowFrogJelly · 07/12/2025 09:50

Ifailed · 07/12/2025 09:16

It's crap, as usual. I've never met anyone who admits to liking Mrs Brown's boys.

Can’t stand it!

AhBiscuits · 07/12/2025 09:52

I like 1% Club. That's it from ITV.

WolfFoxHare · 07/12/2025 09:55

I just read the schedules out to DH and he thought they were from the late 80s until I got to Romesh Ranganathan.

GumFossil · 07/12/2025 09:55

We don’t watch the TV on Christmas Day but will definitely catch up watch Amdandaland, Gladiators, CTM and The Wheel.

ITV schedule is lamentable.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 07/12/2025 09:56

Last year BBC1's Christmas Day schedule was a tour de force. This year's is awful.

SomethingFun · 07/12/2025 09:57

Oh dear - the best things on those schedules are the repeats from the 70s/80s/90s on bbc 2. I guess we’ll be watching Xmas films on streaming. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a queen/ king speech in my life even when we did only have 4 channels 😁

itsgettingweird · 07/12/2025 09:57

SaintlyLady · 07/12/2025 09:17

@AhBiscuits

BBC1 from 3pm

King
Scarecrows Wedding
Gladiator Celebrity Special
Shaun Sheep
Weakest Link
Strictly
Michael McIntyre Xmas Wheel
Eastenders
Call Midwife
Amandaland
Eastenders
Mrs Brown Boys

I shall watch call the midwife and Amandaland - that’s probably about it.

I agree - just had a look and Beeb 2 is much better on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
